We are seeking volunteers to be at the front desk of the offices from Monday through Friday, 9:00

am to 12:00 noon. Volunteer qualifications: pleasant, honest, like people, reliable, able to

communicate well with the public and can work independently. Duties include answering the

telephone, manage the telephone system, welcome those who enter the building, basic computer

skills especially with Microsoft Word, help with mailings, help schedule appointments and meet-

ings, distribute mail, sign for deliveries, returns calls, respond to emails, help organize the library

and other duties as needed.

Council on Ministries at 7:00

The Council on Ministries will be meeting through Zoom on Tuesday, July 7th

at 7:00 pm. One of

the main topics of discussion will be the guidelines we will ask every group that meets on our

campus to follow.

Guidelines Presented on July 19th

at 4:00 in the Sanctuary

A presentation of our guidelines for using our buildings will be presented on July 19th

at 4:00 pm

in the sanctuary. We request a representative from each group that uses our building to be in

attendance. The type of groups we ask to attend are MOPS, Scouting, Karate, and other groups

that we sponsor on a regular basis.

A Celebration of Life for Barbara Hemphill on August 1 at 11:00 am

A Celebration of Life Service for Barbara Hemphill will be held on Saturday, August 1st

at 11:00

am in the sanctuary. There will be a time of visitation from 10:00 am to 11:00 am before the

service to speak with the family.

Russ Broomell Speaking on July 26th

at Crestwood UMC

Our own Russ Broomell, a lay speaker in the United Methodist Church, will be preaching on

Sunday, July 26th

at the 11:00 service. Russ was recommended, at our Charge Conference held

last November, by our church to the District as one to be trained as a Lay Speaker. Lay Speakers

are often used by pastors to “fill in” for a pastor when they unable to be at their church on

Sunday Mornings.

Karen Grimes has decided to resign from the position as CUMC Office Manager effective July 3rd.

We all want to thank Karen for her dedicated service and all that she accomplished in support of

the CUMC staff and this congregation. She will certainly be missed and we wish her and Terry

God's blessings for the future.

This position will not be filled at this time and the workload will be shared by staff and volunteers

until the crisis has passed.

Pastor’s Corner

WHY WEAR A MASK ON SUNDAY MORNINGS?

The question has arisen in churches across America, “Why Wear a Mask to Church?” I want you

to know why at Crestwood United Methodist Church we have insisted our attendees wear a mask

during worship.

1. This is not a political statement for or against one party or another.

2. This is a faith statement, Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself”. We believe that

wearing a mask is a way of showing those around you that you care enough to protect

them and yourself.

3. The medical community has recommended mask wearing to slow down the spread of the

virus.

4. The Medical and Safety Team of Crestwood UMC, in conjunction with the Administrative

Council, has voted that we should all wear masks on Sunday. This was not a one person

or one small groups decision, but the leadership of the church decided.

5. The mask is a way to help those who are at risk to feel safer coming to our church.

6. One way to honor our volunteers who are giving countless hours to make sure we are safe

on Sunday is to wear a mask. It is disrespectful to not wear a mask.

7. Wearing a mask is not comfortable but our faith is not about comfort. To wear a mask on

Sunday morning is a statement to God that I love you enough to attend worship even

though its not comfortable. In the early church they attended worship in the catacombs

where the smell of decaying flesh was prominent. For centuries people attended worship

services without air conditioning and those services often lasted hours. Our being com-

fortable in worship is not the statement of faith we want to portray to the world.

8. Finally, here is a quote from Martin Luther written in the 1500’s during the bubonic

plague: “I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify

the air, administer medicine and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my

presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance in-

flict and pollute others and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God

should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he has expected

of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If

my neighbor needs me however I shall not avoid place or person but will go freely as

stated above. See this is such a God-fearing faith because it is neither brash nor fool-

hardy and does not tempt God.”

Thank you to all who wear their mask and to the many volunteers keeping us safe on Sunday

mornings. We realize at Crestwood UMC we are being very careful, more than other churches

around us, because we want you to feel safe as you worship our living God.

a stroke and working hard with occupational, physical and speech therapies.

Called Charge Conference on August 2nd

at 4:00

The Administrative Council of Crestwood UMC has voted to sell the lot across the street from our

sanctuary. The lot was purchased several years ago, and the Trustees have recommended we sell

the lot for capital improvements. The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church requires

any money received from the sale of the land cannot be used for the general budget. The Trustees

and Administrative Council plan to use the funds for improvements on our campus. The Charge

Conference is comprised of the Administrative Council and other members elected by the Charge

Conference that was held in November of 2019. All members may attend and speak but only the

Administrative Council and elected members of the Charge Conference may vote. The only item

that may be discussed at a Charge Conference is the one in which the purpose of the meeting has

been called. Our District Superintendent, John Hatton, will be leading this meeting.

Food Truck Wednesdays Starting July 8TH

From 5-7 PM

Wednesday evening, July 8th

from 5-7pm, we will have an opportunity to experience the Chops BBQ

Food Truck for a meal outside at CUMC. Some of you may have eaten this yummy BBQ if you

stopped at the Food Truck along side Hwy 329 near the Crestwood/I-71 Exit. This will be a

“tailgating” type set up. Please drive up and find a place to park at the church. You’ll order your

food from the BBQ Truck and then bring out your folding chairs to sit at your car and eat. We can

see each other and talk outdoors, or you can pick up the food to take home.

Since we cannot hold GAFFA yet, we have scheduled these Food Trucks on three Wednesday

nights:

Missions

We are highlighting some of our local missions this month.

Portland Promise Center: The Portland Promise Center is a community center working to phys-

ically, educationally and spiritually enrich the lives of children and youth. An anonymous donor

has graciously offered to fund a matching gift event, up to $50,000. Every gift you make to the

Portland Promise Center will be doubled through this campaign! Your donation will enable the

Portland Promise Center to continue serving families in our program, throughout the Corona-

virus crisis. Our neighborhood is underserved and under-resourced, so families in our commu-

nity are particularly vulnerable. You can be a part of making a difference!

Highpoint: Highpoint reopened on June 6 and they are now accepting donations of the follow-

ing: Summer clothing (all ages and sizes), shoes, towels and washcloths, non-winter children’s

clothing, kitchenware, home décor. Our Current Donation Hours are: Mondays: 9AM-11AM,

Wednesday: 12PM-2PM & Saturday: 9AM-11:30AM —These donation hours are subject to

change.

Costa Rica – We are currently in conversation with Ashland UMC regarding donations to Meth-

odist Rural Center. We will send updates for opportunities to support this outstanding mission.

Goshorn’s (Peru) – Goshorn’s continue to do God’s work in Peru.

Back to School Supplies and Backpacks - School will begin August 12. Each year our church

collects school supplies, backpacks and cash donations in July and the first week in August. We

take the supplies to the South Campus Schools August 7. Cash donations will be used to pur-

chase supplies. We try to help at least 200 students each year.

School Supplies needed: Markers -10-12 count, Crayons- 24 count, Colored pencils, Glue

Sticks, Fiskar scissors, spiral notebooks (blue, yellow, red, green), Plastic folder with pockets

and prongs (blue, red, yellow, green), composition notebooks, notebook paper, highlighters,

Sharpie pens (blue and black), pencils (#2), blue pens or cash donations.

Blessings in a Backpack and Highpoint - Please continue to bring requested items:

For Blessings in a Backpack: Pop Tarts and boxes of macaroni and cheese

For HighPoint: Size 3T and up diapers or pull-ups

We will have boxes at all entry doors of the sanctuary in which you may place your items

throughout the month of June. If you are staying home and live streaming our service, feel free

to drop your items off at the church office during open hours. If you have your donation items

at home and wish to have them picked up, feel free to call Joan Bryant at 387-0386 and we will

gladly come and get them.

Please pray for all of our Local and Worldwide Missions. Please pray for the loss of two saints

who chaired our Shoebox Ministry (Kelly Williams) and Wesley Manor (Alan Fryrear). We pray for

their families and we ask God to touch a heart and provide someone to take over these two

ministries.

Discipleship—Know, Show, Grow

The Upward Journey group of CUMC has been gathering each week via GoToMeeting and studying

the Book of Acts. It’s a dynamic study of the Holy Spirit empowering people for meaningful minis-

try. We’ve been reading the adventures of Paul, Stephen, Barnabas, Peter, Aquilla, Priscilla and

others whose lives were changed by the teachings of the resurrected Jesus and The Spirit that in-

dwells them. This study was designed to include three aspects: observation of the Acts text (the

what, when, where, how); the interpretation of the passage; and the application, which equals chal-

lenge and encouragement for growth in Christ.

Here are a few excerpts from the study for your consideration:

The Christian church is often not held in high regard in the unbelieving world. Some problems in-

clude the way we treat each other, the way we treat sinners, the unloving way we often communi-

cate truth about Jesus; the way we live as people full of pride instead of people full of humility.

Jesus said, “by this will all people know that you are my disciples by the way you love each oth-

er.” (John 13:35)

Think about what it means to be guided by God. Ask God to open and close doors of circumstances

to lead you. Pray continually about plans and directions. Talk with mature, godly Christians.

Check out your internal motivation for taking actions and make sure you plan is true to the princi-

ples in God’s Word. Finally, be ready for God to speak to you in whatever way He chooses. He will

lead not only in the direction He wants us to take, but also He will lead us away from the wrong

direction or situation.

Being in tune with God and saturated in His Word for vital preparation to carry the gospel. Apart

from the power of His Spirit, we can do nothing. He graciously gives us companions in ministry.

Think about several people who have influenced your walk with God. Write a note of appreciation

and tell them specifically how God has used them in your life!

Upward Journey Class invites you to come join us in the study and ministry. It’s a group made up

of married and singles, most are you at heart, but over 50. Since we have not been able to meet

together physically, we have welcomed new faces from several places. What a blessing! Christy

Laundry Love

Our church does Laundry Love a couple of times each year. We go to the Crestwood Coin Laundry

on the second Saturday of the month. The Mary Louise Guild supplies the volunteers, the tide pods

and fabric softener sheets. The ML Guild, Heaven Bound, Open Door Class and Upward Journey

Sunday school classes, as well as the church mission team have helped us with the $500 worth of

quarters for washers and dryers in the past. Thank you to everyone who has sent in a donation!

July is our month. We will be doing it COVID 19

style. We are making 25 Laundry Love bags from

our church. They have Tide pods, fabric softener

sheets, a note from church and $20 laundry gift

cards for those families in need. We are in need of

cash donations for the $500 in gift cards.

Masks for Students

Blessings in a Backpack Drive

The Oldham County school students are going to need a lot of masks this school year. There are

12,500 students. The masks can be homemade, store bought or disposable. Loops to go around

the ears are best. 1st through 12th grade will wear them at school and on the bus.

If you would like to donate, I will have a plastic tub with a lid labeled masks in the church office for

donations. Cash donations will be used to purchase more masks.

Kilgus House and through June at church. We delivered all the pop tarts, macaroni and cheese

Preschool During a Pandemic

This summer I am spending a lot of time with the preschool administrative staff doing all the usu-

al preparation work for the fall. It looks a lot different this year because we must ensure we are in

compliance with new licensing regulations for reopening childcare during a pandemic. We are tak-

ing great care to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff. The following are some of

the measures we must implement for 2020-2021:

- All adults and children will be screened for fever and contagious symptoms daily upon arrival.

- Parents will use the drop off/pick up car line from the first day of school (parents cannot walk

their children in the building to their classrooms).

- Parents may enter the building outside of drop off/pick up times, but we must limit who is in

the building – no siblings are allowed unless they are enrolled in the preschool.

- Class sizes are being reduced to a maximum of 10.

- Children must remain in the same group of 10 children all day without being combined with

another classroom.

- We cannot offer before or after school care (extended day).

- We cannot offer after school activities (art, music, cooking, sports, gymnastics, STEM, ballet).

- All adults must wear masks in the preschool.

- Children are not required to wear masks at preschool.

- Additional cleaning and sanitizing of the restrooms and high-touch surfaces in classrooms

throughout the day.

- Toys will be cleaned and sanitized daily.

- Toys that are machine-washable are not permissible to use.

The 2019-2020 school year was closed so abruptly we did not get to properly thank all who helped

make the school year a success. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the following:

- To the preschool board members for all of the time and love they gave to the preschool.

- To everyone who registered their Kroger Plus card to benefit the preschool.

- To all the families and friends who baked and supported our cookie walk and silent auction.

- To Ms. Dena for cleaning for us.

advertisers.

- To our church family for the love, prayers, and home for our preschool.

We still have openings for toddlers (24 – 36 months in diapers) and trained twos (two by 8/1) for

Tina@crestwoodmethodist.com. The current regulations prevent us from conducting tours of the

campus in person, but we are getting creative and offering to show parents around by Zoom.

Children’s Ministry

There is now a PRAY–ground in the sanctuary for the children during worship. A PRAY–ground is

a place in the sanctuary where children can experience worship through age appropriate materials

and tools that will help keep them engaged in what is happening during worship. It is a space for

children to feel welcomed.

We want to continue to keep children safe and healthy. We ask that only 2 children participate in

an activity at one time. And, we are asking parents to wipe down the activity (markers, labyrinths,

mazes, etc.) with a disinfectant wipe after their child has finished. Children can move from

activity to activity during the worship service. We ask that children participate quietly at each sta-

tion. We do understand that children are not always quiet.
