Dedicated to Building a Sustainable Future
Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to The Hunger Project’s Annual Gala Event: Making the Vision Real. Tonight, we celebrate our role as groundbreaking leaders and advocates for the end of hunger.
Investors in The Hunger Project are far more than financial supporters: we are a worldwide movement, standing in full partnership with people living in conditions of hunger and poverty. We act as global citizens who educate our family, friends and colleagues about the issues we care about and we serve as champions for those causes to the broader public and our political leaders.
You, our investors, activists and friends, are integral to The Hunger Project’s effectiveness and impact. As we step up our role in the international community and bring our experience implementing grassroots, gender-focused rural development programs in villages across Africa, South Asia and Latin America to a larger scale, we look to you to be our partners and ensure our success.
Thank you for being with us this weekend. I know we can reach new heights together with our village partners to make our vision — a world without hunger and poverty — a reality.
Warm regards,
Mary Ellen McNish President & CEO The Hunger Project

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS
Mary Ellen McNish joined THP as President and CEO in September 2010, after serving ten years as General
Secretary, the executive head, of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). Mary Ellen has 35 years
of progressive leadership experience in non-profit business settings, including as Executive Director of
Development at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and New York Presbyterian Hospital, and Execu-
tive Vice President of Planned Parenthood of Maryland. She has a B.S. in Education from East Stroudsburg
University and an M.S. in Business from Johns Hopkins University.
John Coonrod is the Executive Vice President of THP and is responsible for research, advocacy and its
programs in South Asia and Latin America. He works closely with the President and CEO on all aspects
of strategy, including programs, fundraising and communications and is based in Washington, DC. John
serves as co-chair of InterAction’s Food Security and Agriculture working group and as advisor and board
member to a number of emerging international NGOs. He joined THP’s staff in 1985. John was trained as
a physicist at Stanford (B.Sc.) and the University of California-Berkeley (M.S., Ph.D.).
Sarmi Bai is an elected woman representative who belongs to the Abu Road Block in Sirohi District in
India, a tribal area with low levels of literacy and high rates of poverty. She first contested and won local
elections as a Panchayat ward member in 2005. In 2010, she was elected president (Sarpanch) of her
Panchayat and now works to bring water to her village and ensure government accountability. Eager to see
more women in positions of power, she participates in campaigns demanding reservation for women in
the parliament. Through her tireless efforts, Sarmi Bai has emerged as a role model for other Sarpanches
in the state.
Esther Nawatti is a registered nurse at the Wakiso Epicenter health unit in Uganda, where she has worked
since 2004. She delivers immunizations, maternal trainings, and health and nutrition education in areas such
as malaria control and exclusive breastfeeding. She also participates in other THP activities including the
functional adult literacy and food security programs. Esther has a diploma certificate in nursing and hopes
to return to school to complete her degree in nursing.
Lorena Vázquez Ordaz is Country Director of THP-Mexico, where she has served for over 10 years. Lorena is also
on the Technical Council of the “Mexico Initiative” of Televisa and TV Azteca, the Technical Advisory Committee
for the Commission to promote civil society organizations and the Planning and Development Committee of the
State of Mexico. She holds a B.Sc. in Computer Systems Management from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios
Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), an MBA from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, and diplomas in Non-
Governmental Organization Management and Private Social Investment for Bottom-up Development from ITESM,
in Social Development, Poverty and Gender Studies from Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales and in
Gender and Politics from Center for the Training and Promotion of Women. Prior to joining THP, Lorena worked for
seven years in information technology in Mexico and the United States.
Isaac Olesu-Adjei is Partnership Building and Resource Mobilization Officer for THP-Ghana, a position he has
held for the last year. Prior to that, he served as the National Program Officer since 2007, during which time he
supported the Scale-up Initiative. Isaac has over 15 years experience in sustainable community development,
including with the Ghana Wildlife Society. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Development Planning from the Kwame
Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana, a Masters degree in Development Studies
from the University of Leeds (UK), and a Certificate in Community-Based Resource Management and Sustainable
Development from the prestigious Coady International Institute of the St. Francis Xavier University in Canada.
Sheree Stomberg is a member of THP’s Global Board of Directors and serves as the Chair of its Governance,
Nominating and Human Resources Committee. She is a Managing Director at Citigroup and brings over
20 years of diverse leadership experience in preeminent global financial services organizations. Her roles
have ranged from Technology and Operations to Strategic Planning, Mergers and Acquisitions, Structured
Lending and Credit Risk. In 2010, Sheree became the Global Head of Citi Shared Services, overseeing
operations covering 100 countries. Prior to Citi, Sheree held various business management positions at
UBS. As one of THP’s leading supporters, Sheree has launched strategic initiatives to expand awareness
and financial contributions from individuals and corporations.

Unleashed Women Leaders Initiative
In March 2011, the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day, THP launched the Unleashed Women Leaders Initiative — a
multi-year funding initiative ($10,000+ each year over three years) to focus our attention and resources on the fact that empower-
ing women’s leadership is the key to ending hunger. We are pleased to acknowledge the members of this initiative.

Glen Carlson became involved with THP-Australia just over a
year ago. He became a Global Investor and then engineered
his business to become a major investor as well. Glen and his
business partner Dan Priestley run an entrepreneurs’ incubator
called Key Person of Influence, which trains individuals to
become among the most highly valued and highly paid people
in their industry. Glen has been a great partner for THP-
Australia in the design and implementation of our fundraising
strategies. Glen loves The Hunger Project and was recently in
Bangladesh to experience the impact of our work firsthand.
He wanted this trip to give him the on-the-ground experience
to turbo-charge his leadership. For him, THP is the foundation
which gives his business context and purpose.
JMJ Associates has been a proud investor in The Hunger
Project since the company’s founding 25 years ago. In all of
their work, JMJ is committed to the health, well-being and
safety of all people, even when these results may, at first,
seem impossible. This commitment has always been sourced
from the same fundamental principles and methods that
fuel The Hunger Project’s work to empower people and end
global hunger. They shared: “We are extremely proud of this
connection, and stand fully in support of The Hunger Project
with our commitment to end hunger around the world. For this
reason, we continue to extend our ongoing support each year
and are privileged to work with our partners at the Osonson
Epicenter in Ghana.”

Kees Bronke and his wife Geer Goudriaan of The Netherlands
became part of THP 26 years ago and never left. Kees first
heard about THP during a management training course for his
work as a security advisor. He was so impressed by what he
learned that he joined as a volunteer and became a board
member of THP in The Netherlands that same year. Kees
and Geer have since been on numerous investor trips, raised
funds, managed the THP office in The Netherlands from their
home, and are still active investors and volunteers today.
When asked what being a part of THP has brought him, Kees
explains: “It has been wonderful to have a joint cause to
put our energy into, next to both our busy jobs. Travelling
together and sharing all those experiences has really kept
us together, as a couple. And I have become much more
generous with my money. I have learnt that an investment
does not have to be a sacrifice, but that it’s good if investing
hurts just a teensy weensy bit. I still follow that principle.”
Tove and Ingvar Jensen of Sweden, a successful entrepre-
neurial couple with a wide variety of prominent philanthropic
and cultural interests, have made The Hunger Project a very
important part of their lives. They have travelled extensively on
all the three continents of THP’s program countries and were
instrumental in launching our work in Ghana. They serve on
THP-Sweden’s board and are active fundraisers and activists in
the community. Without their unflinching support and commit-
ment, THP-Sweden would not have been able to develop so
quickly over the recent years. As two of our long-time inves-
tors, Tove and Ingvar are a source of inspiration for staff and
investors globally, as well as their family and friends who
have all become involved. They shared: “Our money has been
transformed into relationships – with people in Africa, India,
Bangladesh and Mexico. It has deepened our own relationship
and it has made us global citizens. It has transformed us to
take actions that are bigger than ourselves.”
Laura and Mark Matika are highly successful Herbalife distributors
from Philadelphia. Mark discovered THP and joined our Financial
Family monthly investing program in 1983, and by the early
1990s was a passionate activist and spokesperson. Shortly after
Mark met Laura, he visited our work in Senegal. Since then, as a
family they have invested at least $5,000 a year, and sometimes
much more. Their 13-year old daughter Gia has had her own
Financial Family account for years, and Mark’s son Nick and his
fiancée Diana are among our newest Global Investors. Laura and
Mark have brought many of their business associates, friends
and family to THP and have been anchors of the Philadelphia
THP community for nearly 20 years. They shared: “We consider
ourselves to be global citizens. The opportunity to invest in the
unique programs and initiatives of THP allows us to make a real
difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters around the world
while we, ourselves, have the experience of interconnectedness
and being fulfilled.”
Joan, Kevin, Hannah and Joseph Salwen are a family of four who
sold their house, moved into one half the size and decided to give
half the proceeds to charity. After researching aid organizations
for many months, conducting interviews and hiring a consultant
to help them find an organization with which they could connect,
they found THP. Since, they have embarked on an amazing
journey to share their story and the “Power of Half” through a
book and in presentations around the country and a wide array
of media. They shared: “After Hannah found THP on the Internet,
our beliefs about helping and serving and partnering were
forever changed. We learned why THP recognizes that we in rich
countries, not just villagers, are hungry and poor; we hunger for
connection, for meaning. And why THP believes that the Salwens
can be partners with these enterprising people, that we can
support and affirm and provide resources that will help women
and men end their own poverty and hunger. We are most grateful
to THP for teaching us these valuable truths.”

Financial Family
The Financial Family is an extraordinary group of 2,300 people who have committed to invest in the end of hunger each and every
month. Many members have been investing for 25+ years. The Financial Family is a key part of the heart and soul of The Hunger
Project and their sustained investment and commitment makes a tremendous difference in our work.
The Legacy Circle
The following individuals have included The Hunger Project in their estate plan — through a bequest in their will, the establishment
of a trust, or by making THP a beneficiary of an insurance policy or retirement plan. By joining the Legacy Circle, they have taken
action to ensure the strength of THP’s programs in the future. Interested in joining the Legacy Circle? Contact Jim Goodman,
Director of Planned Giving at [email protected] or visit www.thp.org/legacy to learn more.
