President’s Message

Dear Fellow Trapshooters and VTA Members,

On behalf of the Virginia Trapshooting Association and Winchester Gun Club, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to another great year of successful trapshooting in 2012. Your VTA Board of Directors is hard at work on next year’s state plans, as well as new ideas to get shooters out to support our great clubs in Virginia. I want to thank everyone for participating in the Hall of Fame, Virginia State and Grand Old Dominion shoots in 2011. Also, thank you for participating in all of the other shoots at all of the Virginia gun clubs. Please continue to support your local clubs as well. We hope to see all of you out supporting the VTA and WGC in 2012. I want to thank Amy Hakola for the great food and all of her efforts inrunning the kitchen in 2011. I would like to introduce Jordan Springs Market, winner of the Winchester barbecue cookoffs. They will be filling your needs and your tummies with great food in 2012 and beyond. Please stop and see them whiled you are at the WGC. In 2011, we added six new leased campsites with more sites possibly avail-able for lease this year. We are taking reservations for general campsites this year. Again this year, you will see a special featured sponsor at the State shoot. RIO Ammunition along with Bob’s Shooting Supplies and the VTA will cosponsor a RIO ammo day on Saturday, June 30, 2012 ONLY. Special prizes will be awarded, along with Bob’s specials at the ammo store. Most of the time, the obvious things get overlooked; all the folks who help in the scoring activities and the people behind them, as well as WGC for the great job they do in keeping the facility looking and running great. Without them, we could not function. A special thanks to Dave Feage who helped getting emergency power to the trap for the shootoffs at the State shoot last year. Lastly, I personally want to thank the Board of Directors of the VTA who always go above and beyond when duty calls. We need your support to make 2012 a successful year. Remember YOU are the VTA and what makes trapshooting in Virginia successful.

Great shooting to all!Best regards,Robert G. BrinoPresident, Virginia Trapshooting Association

The VTA would like to congratulate Steve Hawkins for again being named to the ATA All American Veterans

Team.

General Shoot Information The Virginia Trapshooting Association (VTA) shoots will be held at the VTA Home-grounds, Winchester Gun Club, Stephenson, VA. The VTA will have full responsibility for conducting this shoot. The VTA and the Winchester Gun Club are not responsible for accidents or injuries on the Winchester Gun Club grounds.

All current ATA and VTA rules and regulations will be enforced. The VTA reserves the right to refuse or reject any entry. The VTA also reserves the right to change the program for any reason. No entry fee options will be refunded unless event iscancelled.

On the first day of the shoot, you can only sign up in the morning for that day; sign up for the remaining shoot program can be done that afternoon.

All targets will be shot 50/50 on 6 banks, 2 traps per bank. All handicap and 16-yard targets will be shot 5 per station except doubles which will be shot on 8 banks, one trap per bank. However, two boxes of shells are to be taken to the line. After the first 25 targets are shot, the second 25 will immediately follow in rotation. This will complete the first 50 targets without anyone leaving the firing line. Any shooter leaving the line for shells will have to make up the second 25 targets on the practice trap. If a shooter misses his/her squad and the squad has started shooting, the entire 50 targets will have to be made up on the practice trap.

Banks 1 thru 6 will each have two traps. The six banks will be randomly assigned a bank number about a half-hour prior to the start of each event; example: A numbered “pill” (numbered 1 to 6) will be drawn. If the “pill” drawn is number 5, then squad one will start on bank 5, squad 2 will start on bank 6, and squad 3 will start on bank 1, etc.

Shooters are mature enough to follow an established procedure and should not need enforcement. However, the squad leader (post one) has the responsibility to keep the squad moving through the 50 targets in an unbroken sequence and in a timely fashion.

Shootoffs will be carried over to the next day when permitted.

Squads may be reassigned different fields because of broken traps or other delays at the discretion of management.

All purses are percentage purses.

The two practice traps will be the last two traps at the end of the firing line. There is sufficient parking at that location with an access road. The first two traps (old practice traps) will be the first bank of program traps. Cost is $2 for 10 targets and $4 for 25 targets.

VendorsNo rent for vendors but please contact Andrea Smith at (540) 672-4570 or email: [email protected].

Classification and Handicaping

The Classification Committee will classify and handicap all shooters. Averages for 2010-2011 will be used, plus known ability. Any shooter may shoot targets only to avoid being penalized in any event. All shooters must present their average card and ATA plastic membership card to the Classification Committee to be classified. It is the shooter’s responsibility to have his/her average card up to date. No card – No classification.

Note: If you win or tie your class in any 16-yard or doubles event, it is your responsibility to report to the cashier and move up one class.

SPECIAL CATEGORY SHOOTERSIt is the responsibility of the shooter to declare him/her self as a category shooter for each event, if you choose to do so. You must also inform the cashier when you pay for each event.

Sub vets will not combine with vet and senior vets in any event, but will also shoot in the general, undeclared population. Lady 1 and lady 2 will combine in all events as the lady category. Since there are no trophies for the categories, no ATA All American points will be awarded as a result of the State shoot for the junior gold, lady 1, lady 2 or sub vet categories.

For the State Shoot only: For the State Shoot, we will follow ATA rule IV, J – a shooter may declare only one category – and rule X, D, 4 – a shooter who has declared a special category at the time of classification and whose score qualifies for any trophy in his/her category will compete for the category trophy and not for place, class or yardage group.

Virginia Trapshooting Hall of Fame, Inc.

Officer and Directors:

President: Andrea Smith Vice President: Alan CoreyTreasurer: Bob Igou Secretary: Alan CoreyDirectors: Dallas Berry, Lucien Charette and Gary Holderman

The Virginia Trapshooting Hall of Fame, Inc. (VTHOF) is a non-profit organization seperate from the VTA. It seeks to encourage participation in trapshooting among the younger generation through supporting youth programs and education at the VTA gun clubs. The VTHOF was incorporated in January, 2002 and has a tax-exempt status as defined under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. During the past several years, the VTHOF has:

1) Assisted Sub-Junior and Junior shooters with reduced (1/2) price target fees during the State, VTHOF and Old Dominion shoots.

2) Supported the VA 4-H Education Council by supporting 2 shooting stations during the 4-H Championships.

3) Purchased the VTHOF plaques for all Hall of Fame Inductees and the club display wall.

In the future, the VTHOF also plans to :

1) Support the AIM Program in procuring entry level equipment or trophies.

2) Provide assistance to the Boy Scouts in acquiring accreditation for receiving merit badges through shooting and shooting education classes.

The VTHOF also oversees the annual selection process for inducting a Virginia shooter into the Virginia Trapshooting Hall of Fame. Selection is based on superior marksmanship or outstanding efforts made by individuals on behalf of trapshooting in Virginia. Plaques honoring all VTHOF inductees may be seen in the clubhouse of the Winchester Gun Club.

This organization is supported by the generous gifts (items auctioned off during the State Shoot and cash donations) as well as challenges by individuals for matching fund donations from our trapshooting families and supporters.

If you would like additional information, have questions or suggestions for projects supporting the VTHOF functions, or are able to contribute financially, please contact Bob Igou ([email protected]) or any of the other officers or directors listed above.

2012 Virginia Hall of Fame Inductee

David S. Hewitt

Dave Hewitt started registering targets in 1978 and has shot at approximately 160,000 birds garnering many trophies including the Virginia State Handicap Championship. In addition, he tied for the state doubles championship. He served several years as the Vice President of the Virginia Trapshooting Association, but his primary contribution to trapshooting in Virginia has been his great efforts promoting and working for our sport.

Dave’s home club is the Christiansburg Gun Club that depends entirely on volunteer workers to host 14 registered shoots annually. For more than thirty years, Dave has been a leader of these volunteers. He serves as cashier and shoot manager as well as completing the required supporting paperwork. This work requires a few hours of effort before the shoot, much time and work during the shoot and 2 – 3 hours of work after the shoot. This is what makes a shoot happen. Dave creates an atmosphere that brings the shooters back.

Dave was instrumental in the planning and execution of improvements at the Christiansburg Gun Club which included new access road and walkways to the club. This was no small feat, as the Christiansburg club sits on the side of a mountain.

Trapshooting in Virginia is dependent on shooting events at our many smaller clubs. These smaller clubs depend on efforts of a few hard workers. Dave has worked very hard for over thirty years so that we can drive to the club, shoot targets and then drive home feeling that the experience was memorable and look forward to another shoot on the mountain.
