What a weekend! You never know from one day (or hour for that matter) to the next, what you’ll find our weather doing in Western New York! This weekend I decided to pack a bag and head North to our Finger Lakes Region. In less than two hours you can be on one of the beautiful Finger Lakes, sipping their handcrafted wines and enjoying their resort town hospitality all those who visit Ellicottville have come to expect, respect, love and anticipate. The excursion began on Canandaigua Lake. The 15+-mile body of water is speckled with wineries and shops. It is the home to the New York State Wine and Culinary Institute.

After leaving Canandaigua, we drifted East over to Keuka Lake on the way home and visited the Wegman’s family Esperanza Mansion in Branchport and then followed the lake to it’s southern most point to visit the Village Tavern in Hammondsport on our way out to 1-86. Approaching home around Cuba Lake that Saturday, I received a panicked phone call from a friend warning me of the storms that were touching down. The timing couldn’t have been better planned to visit the last little lake on the excursion before arrive back to Ellicottville. Moonwink’s in Cuba is always a fun stop for beverage with their friendly staff. Until next week …

Ellicottville, NY (July 9, 2012) – Pat LaFontaine, the Buffalo Sabres and Centurion Cycling have joined forces for a new biking event called Pedal with Pat LaFontaine at Centurion Ellicottville, the weekend of August 17-19. The goal of the event is to get more people focused on improving their health by riding their bikes in a festive and safe environment while also raising awareness for LaFontaine’s Companions in Courage Foundation. The Foundation provides funds to build interactive playrooms called Lion’s Dens in hospitals

Pedal With a Buffalo SabreGet Ready To Pedal With Pat LaFontaine at Centurion Ellicottville

for use by children with life-threatening illnesses. Using innovative communications tools, these rooms replace the isolation of a hospital and provide a connection to family, friends and celebrities during each hospital stay. “Western New York, the Buffalo Sabres and Sabres’ fans have given me so much, this is a way I can give back,” said LaFontaine, adding that there are multiple distances so cyclists of all ability levels can participate including both serious cyclists and those who maybe ordinarily wouldn’t get on a bike. “It’s such a perfect spot for this event and I’ll be there to ride along with everyone so bring the family.” For the event, LaFontaine is partnering with good friend and endurance sporting event pioneer Graham Fraser of Centurion Cycling, which will bring a high quality of production to Pedal with Pat. All Centurion events feature coordinated starts using pace corrals, traffic control by law enforcement so cyclists have the right-of-way throughout, chip timing, technical and medical support, feed zones and a

festival-like atmosphere to greet riders at the finish line. This August event is the third of four events in the 2012 Centurion Cycling series. Individuals and families, cycling teams and clubs, and companies interested in a group wellness activity for their employees are all welcome to participate in Pedal with Pat. The event schedule is as follows: Friday, August 17: Bike Movie Night in Downtown Ellicottville Saturday, August 18: 8:00 a.m.0 - Centurion 25-mile. 10:30 a.m. - Pat’s Ride (11.5 miles). Noon - Kid’s Ride. 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. - Meet Pat LaFontaine and the Buffalo Sabres (for ride participants only). 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. - Individual Time Trial and Can/Am Challenge (Elite Team Time Trial). Sunday, August 19: 7:00 a.m. - Centurion 50-mile. 8:00 a.m. - Centurion 100-mile Local host partners are the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce and Holiday Valley Resort. For more information about Pedal with Pat at Centurion Ellicottville, please visit www.PedalwithPat.com or www.CenturionCycling.com.

All the water that will ever be is, right now.” National Geographic, October 1993 Everyone can agree that ensuring that our water supply remains clean and healthy is not only desirable, it is essential. Monitoring water quality can be helpful in ensuring that your water supply, whether municipal or private, is uncontaminated. Pfeiffer Nature Center can help you do just that. In conjunction with Portville Heritage Days, on Saturday, July 14, we’re offering a free water conductivity test. We’ll be in front of the Library with our testing supplies from 10:00AM-2:00PM, and can test your water in less than a minute.

Water Conductivity TestsHave a Drink of Water with Pfeiffer Nature Center, July 14

Conductivity tests measure how well your water conducts electricity. Whether your water comes through shale or clay will affect conductivity. So will the presence or absence of pollutants such as nitrates and heavy metals. Conductivity tests are certainly not all-inclusive, and are only one measure of water quality. The test we offer will give you just a single reading. Consider it your baseline. Future tests can help you determine if your water is becoming cleaner or more contaminated. Taken together, a series of conductivity tests can provide you with helpful information. Taken together, a series of conductivity tests

can provide you with helpful information about your water quality. If you’d like your water tested, simply bring a sample to us on July 14 – no appointment necessary. Wash a glass jar in hot, soapy water and rinse well. Fill with at least a cup of your water. Use a plastic lid, or cover the jar with plastic wrap before sealing with a metal lid. That’s it. No special equipment or difficult procedures required. Dr. Ted Georgian, biology professor at St. Bonaventure University, will test it while you wait. “Filthy water cannot be washed.” West African proverb.

The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University has offered to participate in the Ellicottville Memorial Library summer reading program. The Quick Center will send their ArtMobile van to the library, which comes complete with instructors and art supplies. Miranda Earley, museum educator at The Quick Center, has nearly doubled the number of library stops scheduled by the ArtMobile. “We’ll visit 17 libraries this summer, which is up from about 10 or 11 stops last year,”

ArtMobile Comes To TownQuick Center Exhibit at Ellicottville Memorial Library, July 10th & 17th

said Earley. “We’re all over the place – five counties in two states, from Jamestown to Alfred to Port Allegany.” Earley will load up the ArtMobile with supplies and make two trips to each of the 17 participating libraries. Each hour-long visit will present a lesson and activity aligned with the “Dream Big” theme of the summer reading program. In Session I, (July 10th from 12:30 to 1:30) participants will view prints of artwork created by the late Marc Chagall, a Russian artist known for his

dreamlike paintings that reflect his favorite childhood memories. Participants will then use a variety of materials to create their own dreamlike mobiles. In Session II, (July 17th from 12:30 to 1:30) participants will view photos from The Quick Center’s Native American collection and explore the history of the dream catcher, an object consisting of a web woven around a circular or tear-shaped frame. Hung over the bed of sleeping children, it is said to “catch” bad dreams while letting good dreams through. Participants will build their own dream catcher from materials found in the home. There is no cost to participants, thanks to support from The Ink Well, an art supply, design, instruction, and framing center in Allegany. Students ages 6 to 13 can participate by contacting the Ellicottville Library to register (699-2842). Class size is limited to the first 12 registrants. “This is really a nice opportunity,” said Earley. “We supply all the materials; all the participants have to do is show up.”

Ana’s career has been meteoric, and shows no signs of slowing down! The 4 time Blues Music Awards nominee blends smoking electric funk slide guitar, jazzy instrumentals and tight blues groove with soulful feminine vocals. Her incredible stage presence makes her an irresistible force in the music world. Ana Popovic was born in the war torn town of Belgrade, formerly Yugoslavia. Ana grew up in a warm and loving family where music was very important. Her father would, throughout her youth, always invite friends

In this atmosphere, she quickly picked up her father’s impressive blues and soul record collection, grabbed his guitar and went to work at a young age of 15. Since then, Ana Popovic has developed into an phenomenal guitarist/vocalist who currently resides in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Today Ana and her phenomenal 4-piece band are tirelessly touring, playing major blues / jazz and rock festivals around the world and you can see her

here, in Ellicottville, at Balloons Restaurant and Nightclub on July 11 at 7 pm! There are many different opinions as to what the future of blues harmonica will be. Memphis based Brandon Santini is undeniably a worthy player to keep an eye on as the next decade unfolds. My name is Sharon Saporito and I need your help!

To the world you may be just one person, but to one person, you just may be the world. Thank you from the Western New York Kidney Connection.

Hi, My name is Sharon Saporito and I am in need of a kidney due to PKD. I was currently preparing for my transplant when it was discovered that my blood had developed an antibody. I was devastated. The team then tested the remaining three donors and found they also were no longer compatible. I never thought I would be in this position since I had so much support from friends and family. I went from having four possible donors to none. It has been a heart breaking situation to say the least. I am in excellent health except for my kidneys. I am blood type B and could receive a kidney from a B or O blood type. An exchange, I am sure would be possible. Please contact me if you can be of help!

In its eighth consecutive year, “Step Up to the Plate,” a fundraising campaign to benefit the homebound elderly and disabled served by Meals on Wheels programs in New York, raised $41,000 at Wilson Farms and Dash’s Markets. All Wilson Farms and Dash’s Markets stores statewide participated in the campaign by selling paper plates to customers for $1 each. Meals on Wheels program was awarded $587. These proceeds will help the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging’s Senior Wellness and Nutrition (SWAN) program, which serves nutritious meals to nearly 536 homebound seniors throughout the county every weekday. “We set a goal to raise $40,000 this year, and through the support of the community, we were able to surpass that goal,” said Tara A. Ellis, president and chief executive officer at Meals on Wheels of WNY.

“This statewide initiative brings communities together to fight senior hunger.” To date, “Step Up to the Plate” has raised more than $253,000 for Meals on Wheels programs in New York. Since 2004, more than 30 Meals on Wheels programs have benefitted from the campaign. Country estate living is just minutes from the slopes of Ellicottville and the excitement of the casino in Salamanca. This is the kind of home that gives everybody room to spread out. The numbers make the case: over four thousand square feet, on nearly an acre, six bedrooms, and a huge two car garage. The entrance to the main floor off the garage comes into a mud room and a full bath. There are places for hangers, cubbies, and counters for dealing with wet people and clothes. Down the hall is the kitchen with its beautiful wood cabinets and solid surface counter tops. A large pantry room provides even more useful storage. There

is plenty of room to prepare gourmet meals and the eating area is just steps away. On the other side of the kitchen is a large family room. Just off the kitchen is a formal dining room, which now serves as a dedicated kids play room. A quiet and comfortable formal living room rounds out the main floor. The best part of this house are the six generous bedrooms. No sharing a cramped stuffy room for these kids. The master suite is equally impressive; the bedroom is large with a reading corner, and a roomy master bath. Past the other bedrooms and the upstairs laundry, at the end of the hall is what’s called the “FROG” – Family Room Over Garage. The FROG features another large room that could be an additional guest living room,

a play room for the kids or an exercise room for the adults. There are two more bedrooms here as well. Outside in back is a large stamped concrete patio, looking over the immense landscaped backyard. The backyard will easily accommodate a pool, a playground, a garden, or all of the above. The oversized garage has plenty of room for two cars, a workbench and storage. Taken together this home is perfect for an active household, and since it’s only minutes to the golf course skiing, and Ellicottville’s restaurants and shops, there’s plenty for everyone to do. For more information on this property contact Cathleen Pritchard, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker at ERA Vacation Properties, 716-983-4234.

(Pictures from left to right) 1.This roomy kitchen makes gourmet meals a snap with its built in microwave, and lots of counter space. Note the computer work area on the left. 2. This attrac-tive living room creates a quiet space for the adults away from the kids. 3. This large master bedroom includes a reading area, and a large bath with whirlpool tub.

This brick patio overlooks the large backyard.

Set on a large lot this home has six bedroom and three baths, and over sized garage and a huge backyard.

OLEAN, NY – Olean General Hospital has introduced new technology which greatly reduces processing time for critical cardiac blood tests in its Emergency Department and Chest Pain Center. The Abbott i-STAT System provides test results at the patient’s bedside in minutes, accelerating the diagnosis of those experiencing chest pain and other symptoms of heart attack.

New Technology For OGHNew Cardiac Care Technology Aims to Reduce Waiting Time at OGH

The system saves precious time for patients arriving at the hospital’s Emergency Department with heart attack symptoms, where determinations must be made quickly as to whether or not the patient is having a heart attack (myocardial infarction). The system measures cardiac troponin blood levels, key indicators used in the diagnosis of heart attack. The i-STAT System can reduce test processing time from more than an hour to as little as 12 minutes. “We are proud to be the first hospital in southwestern New York State to have this technology,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and CEO of Olean General Hospital.“Our goal is to significantly reduce time-to-diagnosis and treatment, improve safety and minimize patient anxiety. In the case of a heart attack, time is muscle and this test allows for a significantly faster and quicker diagnosis; it’s a tremendous quality enhancement. The i-STAT System uses

a wireless hand-held device resembling a large cellular phone which analyzes blood sample cartridges. Within minutes after reading the samples, the unit displays the test results. “Waiting for results of critical lab tests can be a stressful experience for patients with chest pain and frustrating for physicians and nurses who need these results before making decisions regarding diagnosis and treatment,” said Dr. Brian Walters, Director of Emergency Services at Upper Allegheny Health System. “This technology is a win/win for patients and clinicians. By getting lab results quickly at the bedside doctors can make the necessary decisions for treatment much faster,” Dr. Walters said. By reducing time patients spend in the Chest Pain Center, the hospital can also reduce congestion during busy periods and speed up admission to the hospital for those requiring hospitalization or discharge for those going home.

According to Mike it was Jay Stoddard who announced to them that he had created a web site, and was starting to raise funds in order to found a scholarship in Eddie’s name. According to Mike, Jay “took the bull by the horns,” to start the event rolling. Eddie’s good friend Greg Capelli organized donations from local businesses, Cathy Trost, Pat Morgan, Dick and Vicky Emkie and Bud King also helped out. According to Mike the scholarship will be given each year to a student “for excellence in both academics and athletics.” He points out

that Eddie’s three daughters were excellent scholars and athletes. As of this week the tournament is full, and the list of paid hole sponsors goes well past 36. Some of the auction items are: Fischer Big Stix skis with bindings and boots, a round of golf for four at the Springville Country Club, a gift certificate at Tips Up Cafe, and an autographed Jim Kelly football. “Big” Eddie was a powerful force in this community, and the community has turned out in force to support the scholarship that bears his name. As Mike put it, “I think my brother lived life large, and doing something as large as this in his memory; I think would have put a smile on his face.”

the Dunkirk Pier, right after the awards are handed out. Plus this year, participants can register for the Greatest Gowanda Harley giveaway ever. And if you want to sport your Rockabilly style clothes, feel free to do so. That’s the dress code for the day! According to Tim McKeever, Marketing Manager for Gowanda Harley-Davidson, ”The neat thing about our Kustom Kruise-in is the fact that it is free to be a part of on all levels. It’s free for the vintage bike owners to show off their bikes. It’s free for the Rat Rod, Street Rob, Bobber owners to

display their cars. Plus, it’s free for all to attend. Not to mention there’s vendors on hand, and the vendors can attend for free as well.” The Kruise-in began in 2009 and has grown every year. McKeever notes that the event has been pretty solid since the beginning. “With an event designed by guys and girls who already live the lifestyle of bikes and cars, little had had to change. There are awards, both for cars and bikes, this year for Best of (Overall), Best Upholstery, Best Paint, Most Rat, Most Original, Best Kustom, and even Best Dressed, as this is an event many come to dressed to impress. Ladies: pin-up dresses. Guys: Pomade and Garage Shirts.” McKeever says 2012 is a very special year at Gowanda Harley-Davidson. “It is our

65th anniversary. Started in 1947 by John S. and Babs Reid, we are excited to be one of the oldest, continuously family-owned and operated dealerships in the United States. Three generations of family and close friends are part of the dealership, and its daily operations.” McKeever says that riding a Harley-Davidson has never been more popular. “This is the year that people are starting to put a little more faith in the economy, and with it being sunny and 80 week after week, our customers (the best in the world) are riding.” People can register a car or bike for Kustom Kruise-in IV by calling Gowanda Harley-Davidson at 716-532-4584, or just roll in on Saturday, July 21st. Besides the fun, entertainment, and social aspects that a pow wow brings, you will find yourself being educated and nurturing your sense of community. A special honoring on Friday will pay tribute to a few of the legion members. All veterans, Native and non-Native, will hopefully be joining in on the pow wow veterans songs. Throughout the weekend there will be many exhibits showcasing the local Native contributions to all of America’s wars as well as films on the effects of war and historical trauma. Many different Native artists will be brought together to proudly share their culture.

Veterans Pow Wow Iroquois Post 1587 to “Honor all Veterans” this July 13-15

Special guests, visitors, and artists are coming from all over the country to share in this cultural exchange. There will be various art vendors as well as arts and crafts demonstrating their skills and educating the public about Native traditions and how their crafts are made. Even more exciting, you will be able to watch the competitions in western style and smoke dancing as well as drum competitions. The day will fly by with the knowledge you will gain and fun you will be having. A new feature is being introduced for the first time this year. At the Veterans pow wow they will have family flag honoring which

include a special ceremony collecting and displaying deceased family member’s flags. These flags will be showcased throughout the weekend. At the end of the pow wow another ceremony will give the flags back to their families. The pow wow not only allows all to share the many different customs and traditions but to also make new friends. and we need to take care of it just like we take care of our houses. Animals are the children of the Earth and we need to care for them just as we would take care of our own children. Therefore, I am sending out a plea to all concerned business leaders to help save our home and the children in our home by helping Hawk Creek Wildlife Refuge,” says Ms. DeCarlo. Hawk Creek Wildlife Refuge is a volunteer driven organization and is funded by private donations and program fees. It does not receive any state or federal

funds. As an environmental organization composed of educators, conservationists and rehabilitationists, Hawk Creek serves over 500 animal patients each year. Any business interested in joining Lisa’s efforts may log onto Hawk Creek’s website and become a sponsor or can they adopt any of the animals shown on their website.
