The summer season here on the shores of Chautauqua

is just starting to wind down. You can sense this as you walk down the sidewalks of Bemus Point and feel a certain crispness in the morning air. It’s a sign – a sign of the wonderful change coming very soon, whether you’re ready for it or not. As for me, I just love the on-set of autumn in the Southern Tier. Everyone will continue the summer traditions of boating, barbequing, and relaxing with a good glass of wine while watching the glorious sunsets. But late August can bring cool mornings and cooler nights – “great sleeping weather,” my mother always says. Short sleeves and shorts give in to sweaters and jeans, (which we all hope we can still squeeze into after a summer full of over-indulgence).

And the summer “hustle and bustle,” (it’s such a short season – we simply must cram in as much fun as we possibly can) starts to sputter a bit, largely evident during the quiet weekdays. It’s truly one of my favorite times of the year – this “shoulder-time” between summer and fall. Well, the change in seasons is inevitable, but we’ll scarcely have time to notice – there’s still two months left of fun in the sun, and I’m planning on taking every advantage of living in such a wonderful place. So, dear readers – keep an eye on the horizon but live for today and tomorrow. With a happy, upbeat attitude, you just never know – something really great is undoubtedly in store for you!

Until next week… JZ

Documenting StructuresLocal Team Compiles Images Reflecting County’s History

MAYVILLE, N.Y. - A group of volunteers from throughout Chautauqua County have been working to compile images of former or existing structures, which reflect the rich history of the County between 1804 and 1900. Calling themselves the “Historic Structures Database Team,” members have taken to our Main Streets and back roads, documenting and photographing the locations, conditions, and architectural styles of structures built during the County’s first century. Additionally, historical photographs at local museums and libraries have been researched to identify structures no longer standing, and to compare a structure’s appearance today with its past appearance. The database that has been compiled is extensive and continues to grow with contributions from team members and from the public. Information about the families who occupied the structures is added to the database when available, frequently coming

from descendants who visit the online database and find their ancestor’s home listed. The database is hosted on the County Historian’s web page at: www.co.chautauqua.n y . u s / d e p a r t m e n t s /c l e r k / h i s t o r i a n / P a g e s /HistoricalCountyStructures.aspx In addition to the Historic Structures Database, posters of Greek Revival Architecture for each town in the County are being created in conjunction with the County’s Bicentennial. The 20 posters that have been completed to date will be on display at the Bicentennial History Fair in August. A copy will be presented to each town for display in their town hall, library, or historical museum. Why Greek Revival? The style was not here yet in 1811, but many of them are 175 years old. They are not gilded Victorian houses but a few of them are still mansions. They are our Greek Revival homes, shops, inns and churches. They have been chosen to celebrate

the County’s Bicentennial because they represent the most popular architectural style of our merchants and our gentleman farmers prior to the Civil War. Also, they range in size from very large to very small, and over 60 percent of them have been lost to fire, demolition or severe alteration. About the History FairThe Bicentennial History Fair celebrates Chautauqua County’s rich and vibrant history by bringing together 54 organizations from the County that work to preserve and promote our local history. The History Fair will take place at Chautauqua Suites Conference Center on Route 394 in Mayville, on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 14 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is free. The History Fair is a Bicentennial Passport destination, so be sure to stop at the County Historian’s booth to get your passport stamped! For information, contact call (716) 753-4857.

Summertime in Bemus Point, NY sure is grand isn’t it? The summer sun is the perfect blanket touching down over the water of the lake and rooftops surrounding it. The live entertainment is anything but a lullaby as it triumphantly sounds the excitement of the season, and the crisp, refreshing water is the perfect compliment to the revved up atmosphere providing a calm and cool relaxer for all who dip their feet. It’s just so…fun here, isn’t it? And who knew there was an affordable way to experience every bit of it right here in the heart of the Village? Well, news is that Bemus Bay Condominiums has upped the ante this summer and put forth a real estate product unlike any other in the area. Seriously. The Bemus Bay Condominium Project has taken off. Starting at $335,000 each of the 40 units offers a pristine waterfront view of Chautauqua Lake. Catching every bit of sunshine reflecting off the lake, the condominiums have much more to offer than a great view. The kitchens and bathrooms all come with tile flooring and granite countertops. As Steve Holt, Sales Manager for Howard Hanna Holt Real Estate says, “There really aren’t a lot of upgrades needed because we went high end on everything from the start.” Holt isn’t kidding. Not only are the units high-end inside and out, but each one also includes

a dock slip, garage and an extra parking space. Additionally, owners of the units have access to the pool and spa area, but even that can’t top the location. The Bemus Bay Condominiums are located right in the heart of the Bemus Point Village. “It’s literally close to everything,” Holt reveals, “You’re central to everything Bemus Point has to offer! The stage at the Italian Fisherman is visible from the building; the shops and restaurants are just a walk or a short drive away. It’s really right where you want to be.” “The best part is, “ Holt continues, “that owners can get complete customization of the units. From flooring, to cabinets and carpeting, they get to choose. So it’s not just the fact that we’ve got the best spot for our owners to be, it’s the fact we’ll build out our units to their specifications as

well!” Bemus Bay Condominiums is currently offering four pre-finished units for the buyer wanting an “immediate in” to the community. Units available range from the 3 bedroom, 2 bath units offering 1500 square feet to the 3 bedroom 3 bath units with 1700 square feet. This summer alone, the company has already closed on one unit and is building out three others that are already under contract. “We’ve gotten the excitement back,” says Holt, “People are becoming much more active in the market and are ready to buy property here!” Bemus Bay Condominiums are located at 50 Lakeside Drive just south of Bemus Point Road. If you’d like more information or to set up a visit, please contact Howard Hanna Holt Real Estate at 716-753-7880 or visit online at www.howardhannaholt.com.

Bicentennial History FairEvent this Sat. & Sun. Features 20th Maine Civil War Fife & Drum Corps

As a special addition to the Bicentennial History Fair (Aug. 13 and 14), the 20th Maine Civil War Fife and Drum Corps will participate in the military encampment that will take place on the grounds of Chautauqua Suites Conference Center during the History Fair. Throughout the two-day event they will perform period music using authentic reproduction instruments, and offer presentations on the music and the crucial role played by Fife and Drum Corps during the war. The 20th Maine Civil War Fife & Drum Corps is a group of re-enactors dedicated to preserving our nation’s history and commemorating the sacrifices of the men and women made during the Civil War. This group is comprised of re-enactors from throughout the eastern United States who participate in numerous national events such as the Battle of Gettysburg and Bull Run. They also participate in parades and conduct living history demonstrations for community events and schools that include discussions of causes of the war, camp life, uniforms and period clothing, medicine, weapons, and performing music of the era with fifes and drums. Historical roots of the 20th Maine come from the famous Joshua Chamberlain, most

known for his leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg and his defense of Little Round Top. Some members of the group are descendants of the Chamberlain family; all are enthusiastic historians of our American past. Members continue to research and practice music throughout the year, ever mindful of their predecessors from the original 20th Maine, who when first mustered in, were threatened by sword from the commander because they could not carry a tune. Presque Isle Field TripAududon Society Offers Excursion to Park to Research Purple Martins

JAMESTOWN, NY - On Friday, August 19, the Audubon Center and Sanctuary is taking a guided field trip to Erie’s Presque Isle State Park to view tens of thousands of Purple Martins. The Purple Martin is the largest North American swallow. Their flying speed and agility have led to their being described as “aerial acrobats.” When they approach their housing, they dive from the sky at great speeds with their wings tucked. By late August, Purple Martins are ready to head south. From many miles away, they gather into huge flocks before taking off all together. The cattail marsh at Presque Isle is one of their pre-migration staging areas. John Tautin, Executive Director of the Purple Martin Conservation Association (PMCA), will lead the 6 pm tour, part of Audubon’s Summer Learning Series. Participants will meet at Beach 11 on

Presque Isle and are encouraged to bring a spotting scope and/or binoculars, a lawn chair, and insect repellent. Tautin will play recordings of Purple Martin calls to attract the birds to a wire near the parking lot. Participants will get a good close look at the birds through spotting scopes and binoculars and learn how citizen scientists actually read out band numbers they observe. As dusk approaches, the group will caravan over to the roosting site to watch tens of thousands of birds gather. Cost is $10 for members, $12 for nonmembers and $5 for children 11 and under. Participants are encouraged to invite friends and carpool. A map to Beach 11 at Presque Isle is on-line by following the links at http://jasadultprograms.wordpress.com. Little River BandNational Act Takes Stage at Bemus Bay, Next Friday August 19

Have you heard about the Lonesome Loser? Are you in the mood for some Reminiscing? Then don’t miss a special concert appearance of the Little River Band on the floating stage at Bemus Point. The concert takes place Friday, August 19, at 7:45 p.m. and is part of the Bemus Bay Pops Concert Series. The music of the Little River Band goes back to the waning days of 45 records and vinyl albums, and popular music played on AM radio. Their string of hits continued on into the digital age. The Australian band, formed in Melbourne in 1975, scored several stateside hits, but never a number one charting single. They join the Bee Gees as the only two Australian bands to hit the pop charts in the United States. The band’s first American hit was “It’s A Long Way There,” which broke into the Top 30 in 1976. Following were a string of late 1970’s hit records, including “Help is on Its Way,” “Happy Anniversary,” “Reminiscing,” “Lady,” “Lonesome Loser,” and “Cool Change.” You can often hear their records on the radio, whether it’s on a classic hits station like CBS-FM in New York City, or the standards and oldies powerhouse “AM 740” in Toronto. Current members of the Little River Band are Wayne Nelson, Greg Hind, Chris Marion, Mel Watts, and Rich Herring. They’re still busy performing, both in this country and abroad. From 2006 to 2009, the band performed over 350 live shows, according to their official website. And they’ve stayed busy in the recording studio. Their most recent CDs are “Rearranged,” “Standing Room Only,” “Outback,” a cover of the Beatles “In My life,” and their first Christmas CD, “We Call It Christmas.” According to their web site, “It’s always fun to watch as people are swept up by the show’s vitality and volume of hits.

performed onstage in Europe and appeared on nationwide television, creating more Barbra fans along the way. Owens says,” I guess I look like her (Streisand) and sound like her. I spoofed her at first, but then started taking it a little more seriously instead of making it campy. That’s really how it (Sharon’s career) fell into place.” Owens notes that while she sings like Streisand, it was a bit tricky mastering Barbra’s Brooklyn accent. Sharon Owens looks forward

to her return to Chautauqua Lake. She says, “I’m so excited to come back to Bemus Bay. Although, it isn’t ‘Babs and Frank’ this time, but I still work with Frank every night in Vegas! And funny enough, he plays drums for me and is the musical director for my solo show. I am doing my solo tribute to Babs. I will take (the audience) through the eras of music from the 60’s to now, and also her movies and Broadway (Funny Girl.) Also, the 70’s disco. You can’t forget ‘Woman in Love’ and ‘Guilty.’” Last year, Owens teamed up with a Frank Sinatra imitator to perform a concert that never was, seeing that Barbra Streisand never sang with Frank Sinatra. Dan Dalpra, who represents the

Bemus Bay Pops, is preparing for an eventful evening at the Italian Fisherman, which he owns. Dalpra notes that Sharon Owens “was a huge success and a great show last year, which is why we’re doing it again. It was a good fundraiser for the hospital. This year she’s doing a tribute to the ‘A Funny Girl’ (aspect of Streisand’s career).” Dalpra explains that there are two types of tickets for the show. VIP tickets are $250, which includes a five-course meal and an open bar. Preferred seating tickets are $100. “It will be a ninety minute show with some surprises.” The original concert production is entitled “Tribute to A Funny Girl: An Evening with Barbra Streisand.”

annual celebration of the important role marinas play in waterfront communities all across America,” said Ken Shearer, president of Chautauqua Marina. We hope you will visit Chautauqua Marina and learn about your communities’ marina and ways to keep our lake safe and clean for your enjoyment.” Chautauqua Marina understands the important role that our lake plays to tourism in our area and the marina is proud to host “Lake Day” during our National Marina Day Celebration. It is important for Chautauqua Marina to support and offer programs like this to our visitors and residents. “This entire community has been generously involved with this event over the past few years and continues to

support this event” stated, Lou Clementi, manager of boat and Jet-ski Rentals at Chautauqua Marina. Lou Clementi Sr. comments, “Offering some of the classes free to the public in particular Shoreline Plantings and more presented by the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy will help many visitors and residents understand how a natural shoreline functions and as well how important it is that we collectively learn to preserve, not destroy a critical balance.” He continued, “We continue to support and learn from organizations such as Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy and Chautauqua Lake Association and this is our way to help them to educate visitors and residents. Jane Conroe, CWC Conservationists added, “It is the goal of all of us to keep our lake, clean and safe to enjoy for many years to come.” Ken Shearer, President of Chautauqua Marina and President of the Mayville

Chamber of Commerce stated. “The free youth fishing Contest has offered parents and grandparents the opportunity to watch the excitement in the kids eyes when they hook their fish---All the kids catch fish. He continued, “We appreciate the support and participation we have had over the past three years and we look forward to an exciting family event this year!!” If you do not want to take a class in Musky fishing, Shoreline Plantings or have your kids participate in the free youth fishing contest---stop by and see our marina and visit our local and state organizations. Complimentary hotdogs will be available to class participants and all children and families participating in the free youth fishing contest from noon until 1:15.
