HEALTH & WELLNESS

DRCS HEALTH HINTSBY ZARAKHATCHATRIANIT’S THAT TIME OFTHE YEAR AGAIN!

The holidays are here, andunfortunately so is flu season.Influenza season beginssometime in the late fall, usuallypeaks over the winter, andbegins to wane in the spring. The influenza virus is acontagious respiratory illnessthat can infect the throat, nose, and possibly the lungs. As ourimmune defenses decline withage, those over 65 and older areat a greater risk forcomplications including sinusand ear infections, bacterialpneumonia, and worsening ofchronic conditions such asasthma, diabetes, or congestiveheart failure.

The flu is spread mainly bydroplets, for instance when aperson sneezes, coughs, or talks. The flu can also be spread whena person touches a surface orobject that has the flu virus, thentouches their own nose ormouth. In fact, you could passthe flu to someone before youare even aware you are sick. However, people are typicallymost contagious in the first 3-4days after becoming ill. Signs

and symptoms of the flu includefever, sore throat, cough, stuffyor runny nose, headache, bodyor muscle ache, and fatigue.

The best way to prevent theflu is to get vaccinated. Fluvaccines are updated eachseason to keep up with the virusas it changes to ensure the bestprotection against influenza. TheCDC also recommends takingpreventive actions, includingstaying away from people whoare sick, frequent hand washing, and covering coughs andsneezes. Take theserecommended steps to have ahappy and healthy holidayseason!
