This Saturday 7th January at 11am, the crowds will flock to the Wanaka Showgrounds to experience all the fun and entertainment of the Upper Clutha Presbyterian Parish’s annual gala.

From humble beginnings in the old Wanaka Town Hall, it has now grown into a huge community event with an emphasis on family fun. The day’s proceeds help support the church’s community projects right here within the Parish, so everyone’s a winner!

The gala has a huge array of stalls and entertainment options for the whole family, including lots of yummy food choices like Wild Foods BBQ and Raspberries and Pavlova. The Emergency Services will be bringing along their vehicles to show off to the kids (and Dads!). New activities for this year include the Sticky Wall and Astrolab. Look out for heaps more farmyard animals and the chance to bid for a ride to Makarora and back in a Model T.So come on down!

Well this is the first Crime line for the New Year and I was hoping that I would be able to say it's been a happy start for all. Sadly I cannot do so.

The first day was saddened with two deaths attended by Police and SAR - a death in the Wilkin Valley and another in the Motatapu River. Our thoughts go out to the families of these two.

On a crime note, we are able to happily report, it has been a good start to the Christmas and New Year period. Naturally we have been graced with extra staff from Dunedin and I am sure all of Wanaka are appreciative of their assistance in making this time of year safe and enjoyable.

We have been busy enough with a myriad of jobs to deal with including 8 damage and disorder jobs, assaults and crashes.

There have been 9 crashes on our roads in the last week. Luckily no serious injuries. Please take care at intersections and stay on your side of the road.

We dealt with 5 assaults in town. I am sure people are here to have fun and I fail to understand why people see it acceptable to assault someone else. There is no excuse for this and we have and will continue to take every case seriously.

We took only two theft complaints including a car broken into at Fantail Falls. Two backpacks have been recovered from the lake so just remember even though people are happy and friendly there are still the thieves out there who will happily spoil your holiday. Lock it or lose it. Keep an eye out for anyone suspicious and give us a call.

New Years Eve was a very happy affair with only 3 arrests for disorderly behaviour and one for detox. It looked like the streets were full of happy people not spoiling someone else's night. I managed to have the night off for a change and enjoyed how well run the biggest night of the year was. Thanks to our local bars who can take pride in doing a good job, this made Wanaka the place to be after a brilliant summer's day.

There were 3 people processed for Drink Driving with one blowing almost two and a half times the legal alcohol limit. The taxi service in town is well priced and available so no excuses for this. We are out more than ever so be warned that you will get caught day or night.

The last job I want to mention is on the 28th of December we received a number of reports of a naked male walking on the Outlet Track. He was approximately 40-50 with short balding hair approximately 170cm tall and of light build. This behaviour is not appropriate and we would like any sightings of this person reported immediately so he can be apprehended.

So well done Wanaka locals and visitors on a whole for making the New Year break a good one so far. We at the Wanaka Police wish you all good will and prosperity for the New Year and be safe out there. Always blow on the pie.
