Registration Online registration is now available. Go to www.oacfdc.com and click on the Muskoka logo for a link to the OACFDC’s new website. The website is still under construction, but the Conference information and registration is available there. Register before the low Early Bird rates expire at 11:59 p.m., on Friday, June 13th. • Early Bird: Member $540 / Non-Member $640 • Late (after June 13th): Member $640 / Non-Member $740 Keynote Speaker We are very excited to have Dara Howell of Huntsville, who, at age 19, is Canada’s Olympic Freestyle Skier Gold Medalist. From midnight til 5:00 a.m., the entire population of Huntsville, including MP and Cabinet Min-ister Tony Clement, crowded into the local ski club to watch Dara com-pete at Sochi. Dara will talk about the “business” of being an Olympic athlete. Plenary Sessions Back by popular demand this year is our Ignite session. There will be 5 speakers who will each present 20 slides, speaking for only 20 seconds per slide, giving them less than 7 minutes for their presentation. We are still looking for “Ignite” speakers—do you have a special project or information that you’d like to share with your Community Futures colleagues? And can you say it all in 6.6 minutes? There’s the challenge! Contact Mary at [email protected] if you’re up for that challenge! In another plenary session, we are offering a session on advocacy, entitled The Art of Advocacy. Learn how to get your message across effectively and efficiently. Closing Speaker Joining us for lunch on Friday Sept. 5, will be an entertaining and informative young entrepreneur. Lucas Wilson is an Illusionist who will dazzle us with magic, but at the same time explain how a young entertainer becomes an en-trepreneur. Awards & Gala Nomination papers for the OACFDC awards have just been sent to all members, and are available on the website. The conference will wrap up with the annual awards gala, followed by great entertainment provided by Deerhurst Resort. Deerhurst has long been known for its top-notch entertainers – in fact, the pride of Timmins, Shania Twain, got her start as an entertainer at Deerhurst, back when her name was Eileen.

Anti-Spam Webinar Presented in June The four regional CFDC Networks in Ontario, in partnership with the OACFDC, are pleased to offer you the webinar, “Complying with Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation: Legal Update for Not-for-Profit Organiza-tions”

New “Anti-spam Legislation” is creating a regulatory scheme for spam and related unsolicited electronic messag-es. Non-profit organizations must ensure they are in compliance. The following topics will be covered: What electronic messages does the Anti-spam Legislation apply to? What are the consequences for non-compliance with the Anti-spam Legislation? What exemptions are available to non-profit organizations? How should non-profit organizations prepare for the new legislation?

This Webinar will be presented by Ryan Prendergast, an Associate Lawyer with Carters Profes-sional Corporation of Orangeville. His practice focuses on providing corporate and tax advice to charities and non-profit organizations.

This webinar will be presented on Thursday, June 5 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Sav-ings Time, and repeated on Wednesday, June 11 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Savings Time. You will need a computer with speakers to hear this webinar. If you don’t have speakers, please contact Mary at the OACFDC for a telephone number to hear the webinar. To register, email Mary at [email protected], stating which date you prefer.

If you need the webinar to be presented in French, please advise Mary at [email protected] and it will be arranged.

CFDC-to-CFDC Lending A special thanks to Amber Darling of Trenval BDC, Belleville, for sharing the results of the survey she con-ducted regarding CFDC-to-CFDC leading! Of the 23 CFDCs who responded to the CFDC-to-CFDC lending survey, results were as follows: 9 CFDCs said they have investment funds to lend to another CFDC, interest rates on these loans varied from 2%-5% with both fixed and variable rates, and 5 CDFCs noted that they had borrowed from another CFDC with varied documentation. It was noted that Northern Ontario CFDCs do not lend to Southern Ontario CFDCs as per Treasury Board guidelines with NODP funds.

Board Member Job Description & Matrix A Board of Directors Job Description and Board Competency Matrix have been uploaded to the OACFDC website. It is located at www.oacfdc.com → Members’ Area → Tools & Information for CFDCs →Best Practices – Ontar-io CFDCs. The document has been uploaded as a PDF as well as individual documents so that they can be edited to fit the needs of your CFDC. We’d like to thank Debra Muenz from the North Simcoe CFCD, Midland, for providing us with this docu-ment to share.

The Latest From Your Management Information Systems Suppliers

Important Notice from VisionQuest By Derek MacEwen Periodically, the VisionQuest Managed Antivirus Service requires a refresher with respect to aligning computers and other devices it is monitoring with those actively being used by CFDC offices. Inactive or decommissioned devices need to be removed from the monitoring system. Due to the risk of a virus infection, and the security and confidentiality of information, it is imperative that all active devices are updated regularly to obtain the latest virus definitions from the VisionQuest service. Some CFDC offices will be receiving an email in May/June, if VisionQuest has concerns with their devices. Offices receiving the email are asked to review a provided list of devices and respond by indicating which are active or inactive. For devices that are active, CFDC offices will be required to resolve any “not updating” issues. The VisionQuest Service Desk will provide support to CFDC of-fices, if requested. Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

Update from Fern By Kyle Robinson It's almost time for the FaaSBank user testing phase! In the month of June our users will run FaaSBank in paral-lel with the incumbent software package. The month will be used to ensure that sufficient core functionality is in place and that important reporting metrics (loan balances, repayments, Quarterly Reporting etc.) are accurate for the "go-live", planned for July. The go-live itself - the official transition onto FaaSBank - will be completed in batches to ensure that each CFDC receives the attention and aid required to see them confidently and calmly through the period. The implementation roll-out plan - when specific CFDCs will transition - will be finalized during June's testing.

New OACFDC Website Coming Soon Construction of the new OACFDC website is nearing completion and should be available soon. At present, all information and online registration for the OACFDC’s 2014 conference is posted on the new website. It is linked to the old website, so by clicking on the Muskoka Conference logo, users will be flipped to the new web-site. Rather than have a “Members’ Area” as the old website did, all OACFDC members (managers, staff and board) will log in. They will be given access (in other words, parts of the website will “magically” become visible to OACFDC members, but not to the general public) depending on their position at the CFDC. You will be receiving an email showing your account and giving you an initial log in. Then you can change your password to suit you. In addition to all the OACFDC information on the new website, there will, of course, be broad information about the Community Futures program for the general public. Information will be tagged for search engine optimization, increasing traffic to the website. A new mapping system will locate their nearest office using Google maps, along with the maps that show the territory covered by the specific CFDC. As well, the To Learn Online e-learning platform and course catalogue, now at www.tolearnonline.ca will be in-cluded with the new website in a revised format later this summer.

BR+E The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is pleased to offer the Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) program is to stimulate economic devel-opment and create employment opportunities by retaining and expanding existing business. A two-part training session is being currently being of-fered. Part 1, Planning & Conducting a BR+E Project, takes place June 11-12 in Napanee or June 18-19 in Owen Sound for a cost of 50$ per person plus the price of accommodations. Part 2, Analyzing & Reporting, will be offered in Fall 2014. To register call: 1-877-424-1300 (Owen Sound) or go to https://www.eventbrite.ca/edit?eid=11345535803&published=0 (Napanee).

Annual Salary Survey— Complete it by June 20 for a Big Prize! The information for completing the survey on 2013 salaries was sent to all managers on Tuesday, May 20th. If you didn’t receive it, contact Mary at [email protected]. We ask that the annual salary survey be complet-ed as soon as possible, as it is hosted on our old website which will eventually be closed down when the new website is available. If staff members are completing the survey on behalf of the manager, please be aware that a manager’s level password is required to see the survey. Please complete the survey for each person on your staff. Reminder – if you have part time staff, please enter the full-time equivalent salary for the purposes of the survey. Also, be sure to include the percentage of the sala-ry allocated to CFDC operations. The survey on Benefits needs only to be completed once. Everyone who finishes the survey before 12:00 noon on Friday, June 20 will have their name entered in a draw to win free registration and meals at the 2014 conference at Deerhurst Resort September 3-5. Please be assured that we cannot see the data you have entered: It is blended with all the other data to ensure an individual’s priva-cy. But we do have access to a list of names of those CFDCs which have responded, which we throw into a hat, and ask someone not connected to the OACFDC to draw a winner! As soon as we have 80% of OACFDC members responding, we will make the data visible in the Members’ Area at the old website.

The You Tube link is: http://youtu.be/jQxUeXJ0Wb8 Video 2 - Community Futures – A Canadian Success Story This video highlights CF client testimonials and impactful stats on the success of the Community Futures Pro-gram throughout rural communities across Canada over the past 30 years. Enterprise Olympics Congratulations to Cindy Reasbeck, Youth Entrepreneurship Advisor for Northern Ontario CFDCs, on the suc-cess of the recent Enterprise Olympics held in North Bay at Nipissing University and Canadore College May 14-15. A total of 17 Secondary Schools and 160 students along with 45 mentors, coaches and judges participated from all across Northeastern Ontario. Their hard work and dedication paid off as winners walked away with over $3,000 in prizes, not to mention an additional $5000 in scholarships offered by Northern Ontario post-secondary institutions.

Students enrolled in one of the following business sectors: Health and Wellness; Retail (Sales and Services); Technology and Innova-tion; Arts and Culture; Social Enterprise; and Mining and Forestry. They then spent the day being inspired by mentors and gaining val-uable insight about entrepreneurship and how they might turn their passion into their livelihood. With their new idea and business plan in hand, it was time to “pitch” their ideas to a panel of esteemed judges, including entrepreneurs as well as industry people. The winning teams, in each of the six sectors, walked away with a $500 cash prize. The sector winners then advanced to the Grand Finale where they once again executed their “elevator pitch” to a new pan-el of judges which included Carmen DeMarco and Denise Deschamps from FedNor, and Neil Fox from Eco-nomic Partners CFDC.

“We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the stu-dents as well as the teachers for their hard work and dedica-tion, and to all of the mentors and judges who assisted throughout the event. Most of all a huge shout out to Jen-nifer Cartwright, Bonnie Martineau and the entire Northern Ontario Youth Entrepreneurship team who worked dili-gently to ensure the success of the event,” says Ms. Reasbeck.

The team is now gearing up for the Northwestern Ontario Enterprise Olympics that will be held in Thunder Bay, May 28th and 29th, 2014 at Lakehead University and Confedera-tion College.

Our Condolences… OACFDC members will be saddened to learn of the passing of Doug Mad-dock on Sunday, May 18, 2014. Doug will be remembered as the gen-eral manager of the CFDC in Ban-croft in the 1990s. He then went on to have his own website development business and created many websites for CFDCs, as well as creating, devel-

oping and expanding the OACFDC website, which he had main-tained until the time of his death. In recent years, he had worked in Guelph for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs. Our sincere condolences go to his wife, Penny, his chil-dren Lisa & Joe and Dave & Meghan, and grandson Sebastian. He will also be missed by his canine companion, Toby.
