The Family Wellness Center offers high-quality, primary health-care services to low-income, uninsured people of all ages in Travis County and serves as an educational and training resource for UT Austin nursing students. The Children’s Wellness Center is a partnership between Del Valle ISD and the School of Nursing. It is the only provider of child health-care services in the Del Valle area, serving a predominantly Hispanic, low-income, and medically underserved population. Both centers are affiliated with CommUnityCare, a network of clinics operated by Travis County, which allows them to serve a greater number of patients. This also gives the centers the ability to refer patients to specialty clinics so they can have access to the dental and nutrition services they desperately need.(www.utexas.edu/nursing/cwc)

Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction ResearchSince 1999 the Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction Research has revolutionized the study of alcohol and drug abuse, focusing on addiction as a treatable disease caused by both environmental and genetic factors. Federal support for alcohol research is the lowest for any major public health problem even though it could impact the lives of approximately 18 million alcoholics, alcohol abusers, and their family members. The center is home to scientists from the Colleges of Natural Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Pharmacy, all engaged in collaborative research for a better understanding of alcoholism and addiction. Texas Child Study CenterUT Austin’s Educational Psychology Department and Dell Children’s Medical Center have partnered to create the Texas Child Study Center. The center provides treatment for children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges such as depression and autism. Researchers have reported that 10 to 20 percent of children and adolescents have a diagnosable mental-health disorder that interferes with the way they think and feel and their ability to learn. Currently the center has research projects on pediatric obesity, post-traumatic stress disorder, autism, and pain. The center provides training in evidence-based practices for graduate students and psychiatric residents.(www.edb.utexas.edu/education)

Since 1937 the UT Austin Speech and Hearing Center has been a resource for individuals with communication problems and for students and faculty in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Each semester hundreds of clients are seen for speech/language/hearing evaluations and many receive therapy for speech and hearing disorders related to aging, learning disability, autism, stuttering, brain injury, and other problems. The center is housed in the Jesse Jones Communication Complex, equipped with state-of-the-art labs and clinics to support its groundbreaking research in the communication sciences. UT Autism Project

The University of Texas Autism Project (UTAP) provides services, knowledge, and best practices related to living and working with children, adolescents, and adults with autism spectrum disorders. Current data indicates around 1 in 150 children is diagnosed with autism. This statistic provides UTAP with a sense of urgency to engage scientists, parents, teachers, and doctors in a dialogue about autism. UTAP organizes workshops, clinics, and outreach programs to provide indispensable information and tools to those most involved with and affected by autism.(www.edb.utexas.edu/utap)
