From the desk of the DS

Fall is on the way, and the first thing that comes to mind is, Charge Conferences. However, I’ve already said enough about them.

I want to thank all of you that attended our Minister Meeting on September 10, 2013. I know that those of you that were not here had very legitimate reasons. Please know that your presence was missed and I hope all is well.

We had a wonderful turnout for this meeting, and we got to meet some of the newbie’s and wives. The most important thing we did was share about the wonderful ministries that are taking place in the churches around the district. It’s so exciting to see God’s work at hand within the churches and communities that make up our district.

We had praises to report. Terrence Davis, who is serving Westmoreland, has just become the daddy of a newborn son. Jullianne and Jon Snape, serving Dodson Chapel are expecting a little addition.

Those of you that were fortunate enough to be at Annual Conference and participated in the Stop Hunger Now Initiative, know the blessings you received. Good Shepherd is hosting a Stop Hunger party on Saturday, September 28 beginning at 10 am. We are hoping to package 10,000 meals in a two--‐hour period. More details in this newsletter.

Remember in your prayers, Reverend Ben Alexander on the loss of his wife Betty. Betty served in many capacities over the years in the Methodist Church, and was currently serving as the district Lay Leader. All will miss her.

Health concerns for Fred Clinard, serving Luton’s, and Bill Mulroy serving Westland. John Daniels, serving Bethpage is schedule for knee surgery in October.

Finally, remember each other in prayer. We all need to support one another as we win souls to Jesus Christ.

Easing jail visits for kids INTERPRETER/MIKE DUBOSE

In 2007, Betty Hawkins was visiting the Sumner County Jail in Tennessee when she noticed children sitting in the visitation room with nothing to do. "It was a very bleak, concrete block environment," says Jim Hawkins, Betty's oldest son.

Betty Hawkins' observation sparked the idea for a ministry in the jail to children who come to visit. She got permission to set up a bookcase, supply cabinet and children's area in a corner of the room where family members video chat with jailed loved ones. Betty died earlier this year, but her ministry through First United Methodist Church in Gallatin, Tenn., continues. Suzanne Glasgow is now the coordinator.

Volunteers — high school students and adults — welcome an average of 15 to 30 kids from 6 to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The jail is closed to visitors Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In its six years, Glasgow says, there have been more than 17,000 child encounters, with many children coming back week after week.

The visitation room has "turned from a place to sit and be quiet to a place where children can color, read and be read to, do puzzles, play with cars and interact with other children," Jim Hawkins says. Children who used to complain about visiting relatives now look forward to seeing loved ones and spending time with the volunteers, who often give donated books as well as gifts at Christmas. Time with the volunteers is both emotionally and intellectually nourishing for the children, he adds.

Children's jail ministry supporters donate toys and money, which is used to buy more toys, books and other supplies at Goodwill. Colorful Play-Doh is a favorite, Glasgow says, and so are the Legos.

"It is rewarding when they run to hug you when they arrive and say thank-you when they leave," says Glasgow. "The other night, one little girl looked at me and said, ‘This is the funnest place.'"

Hermitage English Language Program (H.E.L.P)

Begins Fifth Semester

On August 27, 2013, Hermitage

United Methodist Church began its

fifth semester of H.E.L.P. with 42

adults and 16 children enrolled. This

ministry is administered with

approximately 20 volunteers and

several staff members. Many of these

individuals are returning so that they

can continue to learn better English.

When asked what their primary

reason for learning English, they

answered:

To help their children with

homework;

Communicate with teachers,

grocery store employees, and others

in the community;

To communicate and understand

medical providers when their children

or family members were ill or hurt; and

To earn a GED.

This program has also served as an outreach ministry because several families

have participated in HUMC’s Vacation Bible School, Worship services, Fall

Festival, Pumpkin Patch, Breakfast with Santa and other activities.

The H.E.L.P. has touched the lives of both the students and HUMC members.

Recently, Rev. Enrique Hernandez-Vigil joined the staff of HUMC. It is their

desire to continue and expand this and other ministries with their Hispanic

sisters and brothers.

Aldersgate Renewal Ministries’ purpose is to equip the local church, through the power of the Holy Spirit to be filled, gifted, empowered and led in ministry to the world. In addition to the events promoted here, ARM seeks to do this through varioius renewal events for the local church. We have taken these events to churches all across our nation and internationally to other countries. We currently have an ARM Phillipines branch and an ARM UK branch with the same purpose for their countries and others. The local church renewal events we can bring to YOUR church are:

Lay Witness Mission, Lord, Teach Us to Pray, Life in the Spirit, Pathways to a Praying Church, Worship in Spirit and Truth ; and our newest event, Supernatural Ministry

Call the ARM office (615-851-9192) and speak to Dr. Frank Billman, Director of Church Relations to schedule or to just talk about which one might best fit your church where they are now. ARM also seeks to encourage clergy and laity through several events on-site in Goodlettsville, TN:

Dedication of Asbury-Babb House

Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 10:00 a.m.

2102 Lebanon Road

Lebanon, TN

The historic Asbury-Babb House is designated as historic site #72 by the Methodist Church as a shrine to Bishop Francis Asbury, the father of American Methodism. In 1815, the Tennessee Annual Conference met at Bethlehem Meeting House, October 20-28, with Bishops Asbury and William McKendree co-presiding. It stretches the mind to realize that circuit riders came from as far away as Louisiana and Illinois to attend this meeting! Though nobody knew it at the time, it would be the last annual conference at which Asbury would ever preside. He died in

the spring of 1816.

The cabin was the home of William Babb who hosted the Bishops in the upstairs room. After opening the conference and preaching on the Sabbath at Bethlehem, Asbury returned to the upstairs room for the rest of the conference. It was said that he was so feeble that the conference came to him when Bishop McKendree called on him to preach the ordination of elders.

The original location, both for the church and the Babb house, was on top a nearby hill known locally as “Hickory Ridge”, about a mile south of the present location. The log dwelling was given to the Tennessee Conference by the descendants of William Babb and was moved intact down Bethlehem Road to the present location in 1971. Since then, the logs and chimneys had begun to deteriorate. The Commission on Archives and History began the process of restoring the cabin in 2007 with volunteer labor and is pleased to announce the dedication of a restored 1815 version of the cabin.

Today, you will find in the cabin historical documents and books concerning Asbury and the Methodist Episcopal Church, circuit rider’s saddlebags, mourning benches, and many other pictures and portraits displaying Methodist history. Period furnishings in the cabin include a rope bed in the upstairs bedroom.
