WELCOMEWelcome to the 2016 Turkey River Safari! From Memorial Day to Labor Day, this is a summer-long adventure that will take you and your family to new and favorite places along the Turkey River Corridor. The Turkey River Recreational Corridor is a joint effort between Fayette and Clayton counties and the communities of Clermont, Elgin, Elkader, and Motor Mill Historic Site. As one of Iowa’s Great Places, the Turkey River Recreational Corridor is working to create great outdoor adventures throughout the Turkey River Valley.

This is your guidebook. You may visit the sites in any order, and we highly recommend for you to be creative in the ways you get to each site when it is safe to do so—try bike riding on the trails, roller blading, or even canoeing!

At each site, you’ll be looking for a post like this. The symbols on the pages of this book match the symbols on the rubbing post you will find at specified safari sites. Make a rubbing–crayons work best—in the space provided on the page.

Enjoy! Each site is a chance for you and your family and friends to grow closer, play outside, learn some history, and enjoy the beauty of the Turkey River Corridor!

Motor Mill Historic Site22949 Grain Road, Elkader

The Motor Mill Historic Site is located just outside Elkader on C1X (Grape Road) about 4 miles off Highway 13. Turn right onto Galaxy Road and continue 3 miles to get to Motor Mill. Stone for the construction of the mill was quarried from atop the bluff north of the mill and lowered down in a specially designed cable car system. German stonemasons from nearby communities built the mill and it was operational by fall of 1869. The original bridge at Motor was a high-sided wooden structure built in 1868 and was replaced with a two span iron bridge in 1899. The 2008 flood washed out the north span of the iron bridge. Last year, a replica of the iron bridge was installed.

Elkader Whitewater Feature211 South Main Street, Elkader

The Turkey River, which flows through the middle of Elkader, has long been an asset to the area. In the after-math of the flood of 2008, the opportunity to reclaim the river for recreation, education, and tourism arose. A new whitewater feature was added to the river in 2013 and the feature caters to Water Trail users who enjoy kayaking, boogie boarding, tubing, and fishing. Elkader Opera House207 N Main Street, Elkader

Construction of the Elkader Opera House was completed in November 1903, replacing the old Turner Opera House which was destroyed by fire earlier that year. Within four days of the Turner House fire, the community raised $10,000 for the construction of the current building. The building, as described in the April 16, 1903 issue of the Elkader Register, was “to be 50×2102 feet, with a handsome front of pressed brick.” In late 2004 the Opera House underwent an intensive restoration process restoring the historic building to its original grandeur. This process has led the way for the Elkader Opera House to be one of the most talked about and visited small theaters in the Midwest. The Elkader Opera House is home to the Keystone Barbershop Chorus and the Opera House Players, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year as a community theater group.

Ex-Governor and Mrs. Wm. Larrabee led a movement whereby the citizens of the whole township devised plans to raise funds for the erection of a Soldiers’ Monument in Clermont. Lots were secured across from the Rock Island Depot. Mr. and Mrs. Larrabee had seen a handsome bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln on their travels in Edinburgh, Scotland, and they secured the services of the same sculptor to duplicate this great piece of work for Clermont’s Lincoln Park.

The Clermont Opera House Company was formed by Frederick Becker, M.V. Dibble, B.C. Gruver, J.A. Ericson, and E.H. Appleman. Shares were sold in the company, and building commenced at once. It was finished in 1912 and was one of the finest buildings in the county. Seating capacity was 500, including the balcony. Because it was the largest building of its kind in the county, a popular touring stage group known as the “Winter Lyceum Course” booked its best plays of the season there.
