The Trumpet

From the pen of Pastor Bonnie...

For I the LORD am your God, who grasped your right hand, who say to you: have no fear; I will be your help. Isaiah 41:13

Be strong and of good courage. Joshua 1:18

The Lord is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life: of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1

He gives power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:29-31

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me will live even though he dies.” John 11:25

There are many treasures in the Bible like the above verses that help us in unsettling times. God’s word is a treasure to cling to that brings strength, comfort and hope. In the past couple of months, there has been much fear and uncertainty regarding a microscopic virus that has caused suffering and death for many people and nations. If we watch too much news, it is easy to slip into and be overcome with fear.

There are good reasons the Bible is full of verses that urge us to not fear. Scary things happen. Life can be unpredictable and hard in so many ways. The Bible names that reality repeatedly. Scripture also names that God is gracious and merciful and at work to help us through whatever happens. So, we don’t have to be stuck in fear. Fear can be so destructive for individuals and communities.

In 1527, the Bubonic Plague came to Wittenburg. Pastors were asking Luther what they should do. Luther responded to not put our bodies at unnecessary risk but also not to flee in fear. The same wisdom applies to us today. Be smart and pay attention to what reliable experts like the CDC are telling us. But also, how can we be faithful in this time of great need?

Staying home has proven to be effective in reducing the transmission of this disease as it did when the Spanish Flu hit our country. Even from home, it is easier than ever to reach out to others to check on them and see how we may be able to help and let them know we care. There are many needs in our community and the world today. Our church helps a lot of people in need locally and internationally. By supporting the church, you are supporting those efforts.

We are all in this together. We will make it through this difficult time with God’s help. Let’s not get stuck in fear. We are an Easter people. The suffering and death of Good Friday are followed by Easter morning. Resurrection does come.

Creation itself seems to be transforming from death to life. It has been such a delight to watch what looked like lifeless trees transform as the colorful buds appear and brilliant green leaves unfold in abundance. Gorgeous color has been bursting forth on the bushes as well. As the season of winter transforms to spring, we will also transition from the season of Lent to the season of Easter. Maundy Thursday begins the transition from Lent to Easter.

We are planning a Maundy Thursday service in which we will hear the story of Jesus washing the disciple’s feet. This is one of the last things that Jesus does on earth. It is a teaching moment, an incredibly humble act of love and service. Jesus gives a new commandment that we love one another just as Jesus loves us, we should love one another. The way we express that love may look a little different for the time being. One thing always remains, God’s love and mercy for people will never change. Let’s keep our hearts and minds open as to how we may share God’s abundant love in humble acts of service now and into the future.

I am so very grateful for the call to serve our loving God with you at and through this community of faith, Holy Trinity. The love of God is so obviously at work through you all. I am sincerely grateful for the very warm welcome and the expressions of love and prayers for my Mom! She is on the road to recovery. Thank you to everyone who made the Installation so special. Special thanks to our Leadership Team, Music Ministry and Fellowship Team. God is at work doing beautiful things at and through this body of Christ through this challenging time. Let us give God thanks and praise!

+ peace Pastor Bonnie

Worship Attendance through 03/22

A Message from our Church Council President: Dear Friends in Christ: It’s kind of hard not to write this month’s letter without talking about the coronavirus outbreak, but I’d like to focus on the special perspective that we Christians have because of our faith and our belief in prayer.

I’d bet that everyone reading this has been praying for the protection of their loved ones and for a resolution to this crisis, and aren’t we glad we were already living in a relationship with God through regular prayer before all this started? It’s like that character in the movies who starts a prayer with “God, I don’t know if you’re listening, but…” As Christians we already know He is, and that faith is very empowering.

Nobody seriously expects God to respond to our prayers by parting the clouds and sending us a miracle cure, but just the act of prayer reinforces our faith that God loves us and watches over us and that in turn makes us calmer and stronger. We can’t know what will happen next with the coronavirus outbreak, but we can rest assured that God watches over us in good times and bad just as the Bible tells us.

And there’s something practical you can do to stay connected as a member of our community of faith, be sure to check out the HTLC website for information on the online services we are having. This will enable us to continue to pray together as well as on our own.

I know that Pastor Mark and Pastor Bonnie are praying for the whole congregation, so I guess that means we’re all on the prayer list for now – and that’s a good thing.

Yours in Christ,

Mark Ritter

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church: MONTHLY UPDATE

Stewardship Committee: While we are not all able to be physically together for worship, it has been heartwarming to see our members, staff and worship leaders finding new ways to continually serve our neighbors - and even extend our outreach - during this uncertain time.

We know that God's promises are true, and we hold fast to them. Thank you for helping us continue our work to share the Good News as we've taken more of our church online! Your participation in online "live worship" during Lenten services and on the weekends, in Sunday school activities, and in future planning is SO appreciated.

Please don't forget that, to remain active and growing, God still asks us to return his gifts to Him to be used according to His purposes.

Now more than ever, it's easier to give online, and tithes and offerings can be made online by using either web address below (Vanco offers us lower fees and is the church's preferred option), with the Vanco GivePlus App, by texting to 833-310-0031 or sending by mail to: 2922 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta, Georgia 30066.

Vanco website: https://gp.vancopayments.com/gpo/#/8a67a3d6-b1d8-46dd-ad1a-8706230 or PayPal website: http://www.paypal.me/htelcm .

We thank you for continuing to support our numerous ongoing initiatives despite changes in our circumstances. Please call the church office if you have any questions at: 770-971-4600.

Thank you, Stewardship Committee

Urgent Need for Food Donations for MUST Ministries To support the State of Georgia’s effort to limit interactions during the health crisis, MUST Ministries has asked all except essential staff to stay home until further notice. Without volunteers, they must scale back services, and focus on food distribution. Please step up to help stock their 3 large food pantries and 39 school food pantries. Food barrels will be placed outside MUST’s drive-thru donation sites (1280 Field Parkway, Marietta; and 111 Brown Industrial Parkway, Canton), where donors can drop off grocery items and MUST staff can take in the food for sorting, without any interaction. Please postpone donations of non-food items until further notice, as the MUST Marketplace and clothing closets will be closed. Most-needed items: Canned meats, boxed “Helpers” and side dishes Canned fruits and vegetables Pasta, spaghetti sauce, chunky soup Cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix Peanut butter & jelly, cereal bars

Children, Adult and Family Ministry Update

Our annual Easter Egg Hunt will happen, but it has been postponed, so check the E-News for updates. This is a free community event and everyone is invited! There will be crafts, snacks, games, photo opportunity for families and a great Easter Egg Hunt. Bring your baskets and come join the fun. A child-friendly version of the Easter Story will be shared. All ages welcome.

Vacation Bible School is June 8th through 12th from 9:00 AM to noon. On the last day of VBS, we have a family picnic at noon in our pavilion. Everyone is invited! VBS is for kids 3 years to 5th grade. A VBS leader meeting will be announced later, but the materials for leaders serving in VBS are available now in the large “VBS can” on the ministry table. We still need leaders, so contact Gaye Markham via text at 678-332-8095.

Thank you to all those who have signed up to help in this very important ministry to children and their families. If you haven’t signed up, please pray about giving this week to loving kids in the name of Jesus. You will be glad you did! Rising 6th graders can serve as helpers, but they must come to training (date and time to be announced). This year there is a $5.00 donation requested to be given on the first day of VBS to support God’s Global Barnyard. This organization supports training, education, resources (and much more) to help the community care for animals. Can’t wait til you get here and get your tickets and passports for the great adventure ahead! See you June 8th.

Coming this Spring! We are adding a light-hearted Sunday School class

that looks at the Bible and helps us see how to better communicate with one another. It is a video study for couples, friends, family, and anyone that has ever been misunderstood. “I said This You Heard That,” is about building relation ships and avoiding confusion in conversation with the

people in our lives. Ryan and Kristi Bjork plan to facilitate the group. Come join the fun and

grow together or learn on your own what some of the problems might be. Blind spots in our lives can be devastating to our marriages, families, friendships, and working relationships. The date of first group meeting will be announced in the week to week as well as the church email.

Hope to see you soon! Contact Gaye Markham for more information via text at 678-332-8095.

THANK YOUS

Dear Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Thank you for your generous gift to ELCA ministries through the ELCA Good Gifts. Your Good Gift is a very good gift, indeed. With resources like seedlings and seminary courses, vaccinations and vegetable gardens, Bibles and blankets, you’re equipping God’s people around the world and around the corner with what they need to live abundant lives. Thank you for your leadership in the vital ministries that we do together and for your very good gift! In God’s abundant grace, Rachel Wind, Executive for Development, ELCA

Dear Holy Trinity, Thank you for your generous support of youth lives at the Center for Children & Young Adults. We are so grateful. Your contribution will greatly help us to house, serve, and develop homeless and maltreated youth and young adults in our community. Every child deserves a safe place to sleep, live, heal and thrive! Regards, Kimberley Ann Borna, Chief Executive Officer, The Center for Children & Young Adults

Dear Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Thank you for your gift to ELCA World Hunger. This is a season of reflection and sacrifice, but it is also a season of hope. As we walk the 40 day journey of Lent, we know that we are walking toward Easter and the promise of renewal. Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger are bringing that promise and hope to your neighbors around the world. You are creating new beginnings. Thank you for sharing the hope of new life and the fullness of Christ’s joy. In Christ, Robin Brown, Mission Funding Director, Congregations, ELCA

Navajo Dig Deep Water Project Did you know that 1.6 million Americans do not have running water?

DigDeep is a water charity that believes everyone has the right to clean running water and is working hard to provide that resource to Navajos who are off the grid.

During Lent, our Holy Trinity family will look outside our community to share our money gifts to support this charity. DigDeep uses 100% of their donations to provide running water for Navajos in New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. No donations are used for administrative costs. Their goal is to continue to ensure that Navajos in all 3 states have

running water. A running water system for a Navajo home costs $3,100. If each Holy Trinity person or family commits to $2 per day during Lent, we could make a lasting donation to this project. If you would like more information, please stop by the Navajo DigDeep ministry station through April 12, Easter Sunday or visit digdeep.org.

Clean water is a necessity and a gift that keeps on giving. You may send your offering to the church office, place it in the offering plate, or put it in the container at the ministry station. Please make out checks to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and indicate “Navajo Water Project” in the memo section. Your donations are greatly appreciated! Judy Hays ([email protected]).

and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society,

and in the world.

Box Tops for Education (BTFE) As many of you know, Box Tops for Education is going high tech. You may still see their label on many products, with an expiration date of 2021-continue to bring those to the brown basket on the shelf in the HT library.

Soon, more and more items will show a new logo on the label. For those, you will use your smartphone to scan your receipt, and all BTFE donations will go directly to your designated school. Download the free app (Box Tops for Education), sign up, and the app will explain the process. You are now ready to start scanning and helping your school raise funds.

For each item purchased, your school will earn 10 cents (and sometimes more). Our grandson’s school has collected $799 toward their $1000 goal this year, so those dimes add up for good, so I hope you’ll continue to participate. Thank you, Sherrill McGraw

In keeping with our mission, and this important outreach segment, there was a contribution of $27,199.00 made, 1/3 to each program, last month.

If you are a new member of Holy Trinity, or your circumstances now permit, please consider supporting HT’s Capital Campaign. Pledge cards are available at our ministry station, and in the Church office.

Prayerfully submitted, Jim Wood, Capital Campaign Chair
