It can often be a contentious issue of debate of when and how Northern Ireland’s ‘Troubles’ began, who and what isto blame, and even which event in case led us to where we are now. You can go back 30 years, or even 300 years andbeyond for in reality Ireland has been engaged in conflict with England for centuries. Therefore, in order to compile a chronological record of the modern Troubles - the term usually given to the mostrecent conflict, we must mark a defining point of start, which we have taken as partition itself and from which webegan in Issue 1. In turn again, we feel it is equally important to give you the reader some understanding whyevents spiralled as they did into a bloody civil war. This is not another view of the Troubles, this has been done and redone. This is the historical recording of eventscompiled by people from different parts of Belfast who lived through them. Our objective as local historians is tocompile what we hope will be as near as possible a definitive reference to events as they unfolded through the lastthree decades. In terms of research we have used as much material as possible and from diverse perspectives. We areconfident that we have covered events as they were reported at the time. If however you feel that we have eitherleft something out or indeed got something wrong we are more than happy to hear from you. As mentioned abovethis series of publications is the historical recording of the Troubles and all corrections are more than welcome.

SOURCE MATERIALRegular readers will be aware of slight changes being made to the layout of theTroubles magazine. This is due to a new format we're adopting in order tomerge it with our sister publication Belfast Magazine. This will not occur untilafter Issue 20 and readers have nothing to worry about in terms of content andavailability. The amount of pages will be the same and instead of beingavailable four times per year it will now be available six times. per year. Therewill also be a decrease in price as the new price will be £2.50. At the back ofeach issue we also listed Those Who Died which was taken from thepublication Lost Lives. Having completed 1972 we have decided that we shouldlist these deaths the way they were reported at the time and not make anycorrections which came out after the inquests etc.The page content of the whole combined magazine will be approximately 120pages and this should be great value as most of our readers purchase bothpublications. We wish to hear your comments on this and remember it's NOT happeninguntil after Issue 20 (February 2006)
