mission statementBishop Amat Memorial High School is a four-year co-educational Archdiocesan Catholic high school. The mission of the school is to form a faith-filled community and to provide a quality education that addresses the needs of a culturally and academically diverse student body. The comprehensive instructional program flows from a college preparatory curriculum that empowers students to recognize their potential and to meet educational and life challenges in the future. The school, working in partnership with parents and the community, promotes education in Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge by preparing students to embrace Gospel values, to respect themselves and others, to become life-long learners, and to contribute positively to the community.

Bishop Amat Annual Report2017-2018 1

Dear Lancer Parents, Alumni and Friends:

With this edition of Amat Tradition, I am pleased to provide you with a copy of the 2017-2018 Bishop Amat Annual Report. I hope that the data contained herein will demonstrate that we have used the financial resources available to us effectively in promoting the welfare of the school.

We operated during the 2017-2018 fiscal year with a budget that projected total receipts of $14,227,085 and total expenditures of $14,163,639 making for a projected surplus of $63,446. As the charts on Page 5 reveal, we ended the year with a balance of $415,409 that exceeded the budgeted balance by $251,963.

As might be expected, the largest portion of projected income was to be derived from tuition and fees. In the 2017-2018 budget that amounted to $10,213,335 or 84 percent of total income.

By year’s end, we had exceeded that goal by $231,737. This achievement is noteworthy in light of the fact that our tuition and fees charges are among the lowest in the twenty-nine system of high schools operated by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

On the expenditures side the category of salaries and benefits for some 110 administrators, faculty, and staff was by far the largest with which we had to deal. The Archdiocese mandated defacto salary increases of 3 percent for administrators and faculty members and 1.5 percent for staff. The 3 percent increase, which has been in place for several years, triggers highly undesirable upward pressure on tuition and fee charges and is, in our opinion, unsustainable.

This phenomenon challenges us to generate significant income from sources other than tuition and fees to fund financial aid to some 500 families that are unable to meet our school charges. The Catholic Education Foundation of the Archdiocese generously provided us with $244,500 in scholarship assistance monies. Our Named Scholarship Program and the Endowment Trust Fund generated $293,804 respectively for the same purpose.

Invested principal in the latter two programs experienced healthy growth of 7.6 percent and 13.5 percent year over year despite the above mentioned withdrawals to fund financial aid. Budgeted disbursements also included some $348,284 in support of our educational programs (see Principal Beck’s letter) and $421,604 for the upkeep and enhancement of school buildings, grounds and playing fields.

We are grateful to the Good Lord for the many blessings He has extended to the Bishop Amat Family during the past year. We thank also our loyal Lancer alumni, parents and friends who have supported us with their time, talent and treasure in our efforts to ensure that our great school continues to grow in educational excellence.

Please be assured that I constantly remember you in my Masses and prayers.

Sincerely yours,

Monsignor Aidan M. CarrollPresident

Bishop Amat Annual Report2017-20182

Dear Lancer Alumni, Parents and Friends,

The beginning of a new academic year serves as the perfect opportunity for us to reflect on our shared vision and purpose which make our school such a special place. Working together in Christ to educate young men and women called to Goodness, guided by Discipline, and ardent for Knowledge has been the essence of Bishop Amat High School for over sixty years. This 2017-2018 edition of the Annual Report provides a most welcomed opportunity to share some of the great academic and extracurricular developments taking place on our campus and to express our gratitude for the role each of you have played in fulfilling the mission of Bishop Amat High School.

With over forty honors-level, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme courses currently offered, our college preparatory programs continue to thrive. Bishop Amat students sat for 600 AP and IB assessments during the past school year and the members of our Class of 2018 were accepted to 169 four-year colleges and universities across the country. Concurrently, as

a comprehensive school, we continually expand our academic program to meet the needs and interests of our diverse student body. To that end, elective courses in Journalism, Digital Game Design, Fashion Design, Chorus, and Computer Programming are among the over fifty elective offerings which enhance the breadth of coursework made available to our current student body of 1,290 Lancers.

Central to our mission, we remain committed to preparing our young men and women for life after their high school experience, by instilling the Gospel values of our Catholic faith tradition. As such, our Campus Ministry and Christian Service programs continue to exist as a cornerstone of a Bishop Amat High School education. The campus Lighthouse provides a common place for prayer, faith formation, and fellowship among our students as they engage in numerous acts of Christian service for others within the school and local communities.

With well over two-thirds of our student body participating in our athletic and activities programs, we are proud of the continuing tradition of involvement that extends beyond our classrooms. Please know that you are always welcome to stay connected with our campus by attending an athletic contest, choral performance, band concert, robotics competition, and dance or theater production. I assure you that you will be quite impressed by the dedication and efforts expended by our student athletes and artists.

As described in subsequent pages of this edition of the Amat Tradition, we look forward to a major capital addition to the Bishop Amat High School landscape with the construction of a new performing arts center. This building will serve as a much needed venue for our thriving arts program wherein our talented student-actors, musicians, dancers and vocalists can perform on a legitimate stage to an audience gathered in a state of the art, 400-seat theater. Moreover, the entire Bishop Amat Family will benefit from the additional classroom and meeting space this magnificent facility will provide.

As you peruse the contents of this edition of the Annual Report, please know that the ongoing support of our loyal alumni and friends is what enables Bishop Amat High School to continue to thrive in all facets of our educational program. With your continued support through prayer, talent or treasure, we look forward to another bright and productive school year wherein our Lancers continue to demonstrate the many ways in which Amat will shine!

After many years of planning, saving, hoping and praying, we are pleased to announce that in May 2017 the Bishop Amat High School Performing Arts Center was approved by the Archdiocesan Building Commission and work will commence during the current school year. The project will be put out to bid in early December 2018 with work

scheduled to begin in February 2019.

The estimated cost of the Center is $13,000,000, some $11,000,000, which has already been secured from Foundation, private donor and school financial resources. The largest single donation, $4,500,000 was made by Shea Family Charities.

Much more information will be provided as we launch a capital campaign to raise the outstanding $2,000,000 needed to complete the project.

eeping our tuition affordable for those who want to be a part of the Amat Family has always been both a focus and a strength of our school. Due to the condition of the economy, many families are unable to send a child to Bishop Amat High School or are unable to have a child continue to attend the school. The primary reason for student

withdrawal is the inability of the family to pay the tuition.

It is very important that Bishop Amat remain accessible and affordable to the families whom we serve. To that end, the school continues to pursue scholarship opportunities for our students. Please consider making a donation to help a future Lancer obtain the same gift that you received.

In addition to cash gifts, many generous individuals and businesses contribute goods or “in-kind gifts” to Bishop Amat

during the year. Many of these gifts are made in support of our Annual Extravaganza, Lancer Classic Dinner, and Golf

Tournament. Contributions such as computer hardware, library books, and printing support are other ways to assist the

school. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those individuals and businesses who have contributed to Bishop Amat during

the 2017-2018 school year.
