Sports By Ken McDowell Sports Editor Is there such a thing as too much baseball? Not according to Sterling Xpress Coach Tom Myers, whose team played 7 games in 3 days to close out the 2015 regular season. Sterling won 6-out-of-7 of those games to tie for second place in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League (RMBL) with 2 other teams with a 22-11 league mark. Overall, the Xpress posted a 25-12 record. “I don’t think there’s such a thing as too much baseball, Myers laughed, “but the players may not think so after last weekend.” The marathon of games began Friday with a double-header at Plainsmen Park against the Denver Pirates in the final home games of the season. The Xpress went out in style, sweeping the RMBL twin-bill by scores of 10-1 and 11-1. The team got up bright and early Saturday morning to travel to Columbine High School for a RMBL single game against the Denver Cougars. Sterling took a 5-3 lead going into the final inning but the Cougars plated 3 runs to steal the contest away by a 6-5 score. That was the only loss of the entire weekend as the Xpress went to Golden and defeated the Grizz 13-2 in another RTMBL league contest. If that wasn’t enough baseball, the Xpress rounded out the weekend and the regular season Sunday with a triple-header, defeating the Belmont Owls 10-3 at Standley Lake and then traveling to Long Lake Ranch in Arvada where Sterling once again met up with the Denver Pirates and won 15-4 and closed out with a 12-1 victory over Golden. “That’s a lot of games in 3 days, and then we had the triple-header on Sunday,” Myers said. “I don’t think I’ve been involved playing a triple-header, except maybe in little league. “It was a good weekend for us. It was rough losing that game Saturday in the late innings. We should have won that game and went 7-0, but we went 6-1 and did exactly what we needed to do. We ended up with the number 3 seed going into the post-season, which is really good.” The Arvada Colts won the RMBL title with a 26-7 mark and Sterling, the Boulder Collegians and the Colorado Sox all finished with a Please See Sterling Page 26 Sterling Xpress on a roll heading into regional tournament The Sterling Xpress will open play in the Rocky Mountain baseball League Regional Tournament tonight Wednesday) in Aravada against the Laramie, Wyo., Colt.
