The Psalm and its Place in the Liturgy of the Word

Modern technology – a blessing and sometimes a curse! One weekend during the summer, the microphone

plugs in the music area, where the song leader normally stands, became inoperative. Our sound technician

was not available to come and solve the problem until the following Tuesday. This struck me as the per-

fect opportunity for the cantor to move to the ambo in order to sing the Responsorial Psalm. In many par-

ishes, this practice is nothing new. Obviously I had some concerns. Would our cantors feel comfortable

with this change, which requires them to cross over to the opposite side of the sanctuary? Would our

lectors take this as an infringement on their turf? We decided to give it a try, and the overall reaction has

been positive.

The Psalms, also Sacred Scripture, are considered an integral part of the Liturgy of the Word, allowing

the assembly, time to reflect and then respond to what has been heard in the first reading. It also prepares

us for what will follow in the second reading and Gospel. Quite often there might be one key word in the

refrain of the psalm, such as mercy, thanks, love, light, shepherd, and the list goes on, which captures the

poetic essence of the psalm for the day. The liturgical documents “Sing to the Lord” and the General

Instruction on the Roman Missal clearly state that the Psalm should be proclaimed from the ambo when-

ever possible, or another suitable place. There is a distinction made here between the Psalm and other

hymns or songs that are sung during the Liturgy, which do not hold the same liturgical significance. In

cases when the Psalm is recited rather than sung, it is proclaimed by the lector rather than the cantor. If

these liturgical roles are understood, and the lectors and cantors know they are sharing their ministries to

proclaim the Word of God, there will not be a divide among the two ministers

.

There are still times when a small group of singers will proclaim the verses of the Psalm together, and it

is not practical for them to be crowded around the ambo. Therefore this practice is most likely to occur

when there is an individual cantor in front of church, or if the cantor is singing verses in dialogue with

the choir or another cantor in the rear gallery.

On another note, the Catholic Church will celebrate a milestone anniversary on December 3, 2013. This

is the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council’s “Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy” or as it is

called in Latin “Sacrosanctum Cocilium,” the milestone event which transformed how we celebrate the

Eucharist. Perhaps this is a prime opportunity to consider where we are with the idea of full, conscious,

and active participation by all involved in the celebration of the liturgy. How does our baptism constantly

challenge us to take part through our participation in this wondrous gift of the Eucharist? Is our participation

external or internal, or a combination of both? Food for thought!

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD Alleluia! We now have the four leaders we need to begin

having Children’s Liturgy of the Word each week at the 10:30

Mass. We will begin on October 6. Children ages 4 and older

are invited to come up, be blessed and sent out to hear God’s

Word (the readings) on their level of understanding and have

discussion/activities to help them learn. They then return to

church at the Preparation of the Gifts. No need to register for

this. Encourage your children to participate.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Today we celebrate Catechetical Weekend with a special blessing of our catechists/teachers at the 5:00 Saturday Mass and 10:30 Sunday Mass. Our thanks to all who share their faith, including parents who are the most important catechists for their children. Last Sunday’s Newcomers Brunch was lovely, attended by some of our new religious education families and hosted by members of our Religious Education Board. Our thanks to Lisa Centner and Dana Crumley for baking and putting on a delicious spread and to Chris Lolli for joining the welcomers. Parents of all 1st Communion and Confirmation Students are expected to attend a Parent Meeting tomorrow evening (Monday) at 7:00-8:30 PM in the Parish Center. Our presenter is Dr. Terry Nelson Johnson, director of Faith Formation at Old St. Pat’s, who will speak on the topic “Sacraments are…” Even if you’ve heard him in prior years, come and hear him again and be surprised at new insights and stories. Our 3rd grade classes will attend next Sunday’s 9:00 Mass as a class. They will be sitting up front on the lector side. Each week of class another grade will be attending the 9:00 Mass in church, instead of celebrating Mass in the gym as we’ve done for the past many years. Have a good week.

The Germans have a special word for it “Ge`müt lich keit”: comfortableness or friendliness. In the small Bavarian

villages where my relatives have introduced me to their friends and neighbors it really means “inclusiveness” or

“belonging.” So I have found it very interesting that these smaller German villages do not have a dramatic decline

at their Sunday Masses attendance as do the larger population centers. Why – I think it’s their “Gemütlichkeit”:

the same neighbors you party with are the ones you pray with! “Gemütlichkeit” forms community!

Gemütlichkeit is the whole idea behind Sacred Heart’s Oktoberfest. It is the comfortable feeling of belonging to a

neighborhood and to a community and to a parish. So please make plans to join us on Saturday Sept 28th for

entertainment, food and beer and fun for the whole family.

Invite your friends and neighbors, even if they’re not Catholic!

Fellow Lectors, It’s time for our Sacred Heart Lector Refresher program. We’ll offer sessions on Tuesday October 1st & 8th, Thursday October 3rd & 10th evenings at 6:30 pm or Saturday October 5th & 12th at 11am (provided there are no funerals). Everyone is REQUIRED to attend TWO sessions. During the sessions, each of us will be recorded reading the pre-assigned reading (after practicing at home). After all are finished, we will review the recordings and comment, positively and critically, on each of our reading skills. Please bear in mind, these sessions and comments are not to be taken personally; the only goal is to improve everyone's proclamation of the Word. In addition, we will review the choreography of the Mass with respect to where and when we should be in the vicinity of the altar. Oftentimes there have been occasions when awkward moments have occurred, or when things could have flowed more smoothly. All of this, fellow lectors, is to improve the experience for Sacred Heart parishioners, and to improve the innate abilities of Sacred Heart's lectors. When we instituted this program at Holy Name Cathedral (my previous parish), there were some issues that some lectors had: "I have been here for years and don't need this" or "Who’s to say what is correct or incorrect in one's lectur-ing," etc. However, when this refresher program was rolled out, it was very rewarding to all and I was amazed at how helpful it became. It helped most of us improve on our lecturing skills, choreography, etc. I’m sure you’ll find the program interesting. The bottom line is: everyone is able to improve, and everyone should be able to improve. I hope that all of our Lector team will pitch in, attend the mandatory sessions, and strive to improve the experience for all who attend Mass here at Sacred Heart Parish. My phone is 847.446.8582 for anyone that wants to contact me directly. To register please go to the Sacred Heart website under the Lector Refresher Course. At the bottom of the page click on “sign up here”. You will be directed to Sign Up Genius where you can choose the dates for your session. Many Thanks, Trip Lane

Catholic Parent Know How Pick up a copy of “Catholic Parent Know How” in our Church vestibule. It’s a great resource for parents interested in making lasting impressions on their children and building stronger Catholic families. You can visit the Archdiocesan website (www.archchicago.org) to find other resources for Catholic parents by clicking on the “Year of Strong Catholic Parents” banner (seen above). Remember these simple principles when educating your children about faith:

Get involved. Join a spirituality, prayer or faith group; attend a lecture on your faith.

Take your faith HOME and make it kid-friendly. Use kid prayer books. Talk about the readings after Mass. Talk about the saints. Talk about Catholic symbols and sacramental such as the triangle (Trinity), the rock (Peter), and blessing ourselves with Holy Water when we enter Church to renew our baptis-

mal promises. All these things lead to everyday teaching moments. Embrace them!

Initial Just Harvest "Stock the

Pantry" Drive A Success

Thanks to parishioners who generously donated to our initial "Stock the Pantry Drive" for our friends at the Just Harvest Community Kitchen. Each month, Just Harvest (ajustharvest.org) serves 5,000 hot dinners to our Rogers Park neighbors. Our pantry donations were delivered by Alex Valvassori and the Sacred Heart crew. Donations included coffee, tomato sauce, sugar, plastic bags, napkins mayonnaise, spices, Walgreens' and Costco gift cards, and other staples. All of this will be used in the next couple of weeks. Our initial effort was a success, that we'll do it again, a couple of times a year.

A big thank you to all those that helped to prepare food and to serve at the Just Harvest

Soup Kitchen on September 15. In addition to serving close to 150 people, generous

donations from parishioners provided important staples that help keep the kitchen oper-

ating. Thanks to Jim Carey for coordinating the staples collection.
