DTP TUESDAY 30 JUNE 2015 BOMBAY TIMES, THE TIMES OF INDIA 8 D r Sandhya Pophale’s institute, the Pophale Nursing Home was started by her late father-in- law Dr H V Pophale in 1969 and was aimed at providing comprehensive, value-for- money healthcare services. The obstetrics and gynecolog- ical services were provided by several noted doctors before Dr Sandhya took over in 1982. The Family Planning and Medical Aid Trust was simul- taneously started as a charita- ble NGO. The Frederation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Award was presented to the institute in 1989 for the maximum number of sterili- sations (2,465), medical termi- nations of pregnancy (917) and intrauterine contracep- tive device insertions (986) done by any institute in Mumbai that year. In a quick tête-à-tête, Dr Sandhya talks about IVF and womens health issues... How have womens healthcare perspectives changed over the years? The era of various national programs, which guided women’s healthcare and fami- ly planning services in the 70’s and 80’s, have given way to tai- lored-for-individuals, holistic and advanced healthcare with multiple options to choose from. With the advent of superspecialty fields such as Minimally Invasive Surgery and IVF, the focus of treatment options has shifted from a more generic approach to that centered around the patients, their lifestyle, health condi- tions and other specific wants. For example, a patient may require a particular surgery but nowadays they want aes- thetically appealing results, which are offered by scarless or laparoscopic surgery. At our centre, we aim to provide affordable, world class, com- prehensive women’s health- care tailormade to individual needs and budgets. What is the scope and advan- tages of keyhole or scarless surgery? Almost all gynecological sur- geries and procedures for diagnosing and treating vari- ous conditions causing infer- tility are done laparoscopical- ly these days. Advantages include a much shorter hospi- tal stay, minimal post-opera- tive pain, quicker return to oral nutrition and overall — a more pleasant recovery. How can minimally invasive surgery be made cost effec- tive? Typically, a gynecologist enlists the services of an expert gynecological endo- scopic surgeon who operates on the patient in either a cor- porate hospital or some other facility. A patient’s bill keeps swelling under all these counts. We perform the sur- gery ourselves at our place thus reducing the various heads of expense. Do you offer IVF? Could you explain how IVF works? Yes we do. Put simply, it means that the process of fer- tilisation, which essentially is the union of the egg and the sperm to form an embryo, occurs outside the human body. Normally, this is left to chance, but in IVF, we take it in our own hands. The embryo is also formed before our very eyes and is then transferred back into the uterus or the womb. Why does IVF not offer a 100% success rate? After the embryo is trans- ferred, it needs to ‘implant’ in the uterus to grow into a foe- tus. Here, above all else, we need help from mother nature and blessings from God — or put simply — luck. Thus, this introduces an element of uncertainty. Typically, as with us, any good centre has a suc- cess rate of around 40-50% depending on various factors, the most important one being the age of the lady undergo- ing the treatment (the younger, the better). How can IVF be made more cost-effective? With us, all the aspects of the treatment, right from hor- monal stimulation, retrieval of eggs, actual fertilisation process and the transfer of embryos, are done in-house. My daughter-in-law Dr Aditi Pophale is a gynecologist and extensively trained in the sub- ject. She is committed to her field and completely involved in the treatment of her patients. Also, starting this facility has been a part of nat- ural evolution and growth of our institution. It is one of the several technically and scien- tifically advanced treatments we provide. We see patients through their entire journey, right from conception to the precious nine months of preg- nancy to the delivery another crucial aspect of the entire process. So, yes, with the right expertise and entire support system under one roof, IVF can be made cost- effective. These centres aim to provide quality eyecare and var- ious specialised treatments for patients at affordable prices. These include cataract, glaucoma, diabet- ic retinopathy, laser eye number correction/ LASIK, paediatric eye testing and keratoconus. All sur- geries are performed in a state-of- the-art operation theatre with lam- inar airflow and HEPA filters. This reduces the chances of infection to almost zero. Dr Nasta has personally looked after every aspect of the clinic — right from administration to oper- ation and day-to-day functioning. With quality and systems in place, the clinic runs smoothly under his supervision. FACTS ABOUT CATARACT SURGERY It is a daycare procedure and takes 15 to 20 minutes per eye. Usually one eye is operated at a time, followed by the other eye after a gap of seven days. It is a painless procedure. A fold- able intraocular lens is implant- ed in the eye after the cataract is removed. A good phacoemulsification machine gives a superior result. Recovery is quick and one can resume normal activities within two to three days. Cataract surgery is mostly an elective surgery and can be well planned in consultation with your doctor. Correct selection of IOL is cru- cial for optimum results. Newer lenses also correct refractive numbers and glass power. Says Niraj Shah, “When it came to selecting a doctor to perform cataract surgery on my mother’s eyes, I had complete faith in Dr Nasta. I have known him for close to a decade now. Apart from being a brilliant and dedicated doctor, his calm and reassuring demeanour puts you at ease. We visited his hospital and were impressed with the state-of-the- art operation theatre, fully equipped with the latest machines and a live relay facility. This facil- ity allowed me and my wife to see the surgery being performed in real time. My mother was com- fortable throughout the procedure and thereafter due to excellent post-operative care. The staff at the hospital was equally warm so we felt at ease, just like we would at home. With minimal restric- tions, my mother’s life was back to normal within a few days. Her much improved eye- sight has increased her confidence and given her a new lease of life.” Where: I-Sight Eyecare & Surgery, 402, 4th Floor, Sapphire Building, Above State Bank of Mysore, S V Road, Khar (W).
