YEAR 7 CAMPIt was the 26th of February and it was incredibly cold and dreary however that didn’t stop 74 Year 7 girls from Pascoe Vale Girls College being excited! It was time to head to the Gundiwindi Lodge in Wandin for their Year 7 camp. The students were buzzing with excitement and had butterflies being away from their family for two nights and three days. The camp was 1 hour and 30 minutes away from the School and everyone sang songs and had lots of fun talking to new people on the bus trip there. Once we reached camp the main question on our mind was who is going to be in my cabin? We were excited and nervous at the same time to meet new people and hopefully make new friends! Once finding out our cabin members we all began to realise how great it was that we all had friends that we knew but were also mixed with new people from different classes. An opportunity to broaden our friendships! It was then time to start participating in the amazing and challenging activities from the flying fox, giant swing, archery, damper making, ropes course and survival skills/hut making. Some other activities we were able to do in our free time were to bounce on the trampolines, play volleyball, play on the playground equipment, visit the horses and donkeys, feed the sheep and see lizards. The food was great and impressive how at times we were able to choose what we preferred due to the huge range and variety. Students were relieved to find that the cabins and facilities were spotlessly clean and staff friendly and warm. One of the most memorable moments was the nighttime campfire where we roasted marshmallows until they were gooey and sang lot of songs. At night, we were also able to watch movies such as Mulan and Aladdin and play board games before going to bed.On our last day, we headed to the Healesville Sanctuary where we got to explore the zoo, learn about endangered species and watch a birds of prey show. With mixed emotions, it was then time to head home to see our families. We were disappointed it was over but also buzzing to share our experiences and stories with our families. At camp we were able to make new friends, build our confidence, make connections with teachers and simply have a great time. We would like to give a big thank you to Ms Arranga & Ms Scuderi for organizing this camp. We would also like to thank Ms Andrews, Ms Bhatt, Ms Rao, Ms McFarlane, Ms Deprost, Ms Mc Dougall, Miss Birgit and Ms Megow.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION UPDATEYear 9On the 11th-12th of March the Year 9 ODE elective class went to a surf camp in Torquay. We did many activities, such as visiting the marine sanctuary, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), surfing, investigating the marine ecosystems at Breamlea and sunset trails on the beach. We had to plan and prepare our own food as well as setting up our tents. Some students described the camp as a new experience that they enjoyed. When asked about the activities ODE student Lilly described SUP as “A fun, new experience, definitely something I want to do again”. Another ODE student, Nabeera described surfing as “An exciting, cool outdoor activity that was a refreshing start to my day and I would do it any chance I get”.

YEAR 11From the 24th to the 26th of February, the 2020 VCE Outdoor Ed class attended a Marine camp in Queenscliff! We stayed at Breamlea caravan park. We visited many places like Torquay beach, Bells beach and Point Lonsdale. At the camp. It wasn’t only about having fun but also learning about the environment and ways that we can look after it. We visited the Marine Discovery Centre Aquarium and learnt about various creatures.

We did so many activities that included snorkelling, kayaking, surfing and stand up paddle-boarding. We also went on a short walk down to Bells beach where the annual surf competitions are held.

We snorkelled on the first day the visibility was extremely poor because of dredging. It was still an experience. Some of us had snorkelled from one pier to another which was about 800m!

Kayaking was incredible. We couldn’t kayak at the river because the water had dried up which was the original plan so we had to move to Torquay beach. The waves were insane!! But so amazing. Lets just say everybody fell over numerous times…

Surfing was a first for some and others have been before. The waves were incredible. Stand up paddle-boarding was also so much fun. We had to cut it short because a storm began. It started raining a lot but we didn’t let that get in the way of us having a good time. So we put our boards back and jumped in the water. Whilst it was pouring and the wind was crazy, we had so much fun just us and water. We visited Point Lonsdale where we saw the lighthouse, the caves and the pier. A spontaneous some of us jumped in the rock pools which was definitely a highlight of the camp .

We learnt a lot about the natural environment, but more specifically how to look after our environment and the flora and fauna. The Marine Discovery Centre taught us about some fish in the ocean that may be illegal to catch like the puffer fish. If you catch a puffer fish, you must throw it back into the water!

In our Outdoor Ed theory classes, we’ve been focusing on motivations for recreation in the outdoors, whether that be the adrenaline rush some people like to feel or the state of ‘flow’. I’ve learned that to reach a state of flow, the activity you are partaking in, must have an equal level of challenge and fun.

The entire camp was such an amazing experience and was just overall so fun! For me personally, I loved kayaking. It was something I’d never done in the ocean before and was definitely an experience. This camp was extremely enjoyable, as we’re with our friends, we’re having a great time doing incredible activities. If it weren’t for Outdoor Ed I don’t think I’d ever go out and do any of these Outdoor recreational activities, but now I’m more motivated to go out and participate!!

A special thank you to Mr Freeman for organising this camp for us. Also a thank you to Mr Meincke and Ms Beattie for joining us.Nadine Ghieh

9A SCIENCE EXCURSION TO QUANTUMStudents of 9A – Science had visited Quantum Victoria on the 11th of March to attend a science excursion: Materials of the future. They completed a number of wet-lab investigations as well as few interactive activities. They were very involved and worked very hard on each set task. The centre’s director: Ms Soula Bennett and the presenters were very impressed by our students’ level of knowledge in Science. They had continuously commanded their manners and their high working ethics. Ms Soula awarded the students with an amazing gift designed especially for Quantum, as an acknowledgment for their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the day.

SENIOR SCHOOL 2020 is a year that will be unparalleled – the one and only Year 12 PVGC cohort will graduate – likewise, the jumper design to commemorate the 2020 seniors should highlight this aspect. To gather inspiration, I explored a range of designs - from school jumpers, to clothing items, to logos - to excavate trends which proved to combat the wear of time: minimalism. Keeping this in mind, I approached the design with specificity, ensuring that the elements reflected the school values. The golden laurel-leaf branch snakes around the ‘0’ accompanied by the golden ‘2020’ at the front of the hood which establishes the year of 2020 as a golden year. Furthermore, the laurel branch symbolises achievement which reiterates a core value of our school. To balance the flamboyant design of the back, the front is more simplistic with laurel branches stemming from ‘Pascoe Vale Girls College’ as if a vessel for student’s achievement, curved to frame ‘Year Twelve’. As the hoodie design is minimalistic, it is also flexible to be worn in different settings from school, to the grocery store and in your bed.

HUMANATIES UPDATETerm One brought the installation of a new mural at Pascoe Vale Girls College. Local artists Nadia Cao, a past PVGC student, and Sumudu Aranayake created the unique design based on the ANZAC theme of 2019’s Humanities Week featuring a poem from PVGC student Malavika Manoj, bringing together themes of remembrance and respect with the iconic visual, the red poppy. In Term Two the school will welcome members of the local RSL groups, contributors to the mural, to meet the artists and poet and view the artwork.
