On November 8th, Stonehill International School and Stonehill Government School were honoured to host a visit by British Prime Minister Theresa May and Royal Air Force pilot and world land speed record holder Andy Green. The theme for the event was the promotion of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics study and careers for young people today—especially girls. Thirty SIS students attended the event; some of them participated in a computer technology workshop, and some participated in Andy Green’s workshop on the next generation of car intended to significantly break the speed of sound barrier. The Prime Minister visited both workshops and interacted with the students. Following the workshops, all students gathered in the Government School courtyard, along with the Prime Minister, Andy Green, and three female Indian Air Force pilots, to witness a flypast by the Indian Air Force. Here are some pictures from the event.

We hope that, through this event, our students were inspired and motivated to embrace technological innovation and the challenges of the future. We have a videotape of the Andy Green workshop which we will be sharing with some students who could not attend the event, and will be following-up in other ways as well. With best regards, Dr. Beverly Sortland Head of School

Festivals and Celebrations in P3

“Trick or Treat!” shouted little princesses, witches, ghosts and many other characters as they extended a bag across for a treat. It was 27th October, Halloween time at Stonehill International School! It was an occasion to dress up as little monsters, superheroes and favourite characters. P3s paraded around school showing off their elaborate Halloween costumes. As they went from class to class and called “trick or treat”, students and teachers from the other Grades handed out goodies.

Page 7: THE TIGER - Stonehill · 11-11-2016  · Children did 'Lakshmi pooja' in a specially made temple in the class and were also informed about the significance of the festival - victory

Following the parade, we had a small party in our classroom, complete with games and treats. The students loved the pumpkin inquiry centre, played Halloween bingo and brought out their creative best by creating spooky lampshades. It was frightfully delightful day for all of us.

With Diwali round the corner, P3s celebrated Diwali on 28th October with enthusiasm and excitement. Tastefully decorated classrooms added charm to the atmosphere as the little ones dressed up in Indian attire. Students created symmetrical rangoli patterns on coloured paper, decorated diyas and unfolded their creative abilities in a string of activities to welcome the festival of lights.

Children did 'Lakshmi pooja' in a specially made temple in the class and were also informed about the significance of the festival - victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. Decorated in vibrant hues, the school had an ambience of joy and happiness.

PYP Visual Arts - The Child is the Product

PYP Visual Arts students started off the year by exploring the “Elements of Art: Line, shape, form, color, value, texture and space”. If you have recently visited the school, you might have seen on display some of the wonderful projects they created. Well done, PYP students!

In addition to our regular inquiry projects that we have planned for the whole year, we have started something new and exciting: TAB, or Teaching for Artistic Behavior. A significant portion of our art time this year is devoted to students guiding their own inquiry into the arts process, by coming up with their own ideas, designing, planning, experimenting, making, evaluating, refining, presenting and reflecting. The basic concept behind this approach to art is to focus on the child as the product (not the artwork). Through their own inquiry, students are learning to think and follow through in creative ways. They are developing their own voice and the confidence to express it.

Page 10: THE TIGER - Stonehill · 11-11-2016  · Children did 'Lakshmi pooja' in a specially made temple in the class and were also informed about the significance of the festival - victory

How is the TAB approach different from traditional approaches to teaching art? In general, this approach centers around the thinking skills of the child. By following traditional art lessons, students learn valuable art and motor skills (like drawing, painting, etc.) but they don’t have a chance to develop their own thinking and creative skills.

They don’t know how to come up with their own ideas, to make choices about materials, to experiment, to fail, to refine, and to reflect on their thinking and learning process. TAB puts the focus on the individual creative process of each child. How can you support the students in their own individual projects? Please remember that student-driven art projects sometimes look quite different from teacher-driven projects. After all, a chid’s aesthetic is quite different from an adult’s aesthetic. While many of the projects the students produce are quite beautiful, that is not the goal. The creative process of the child is the goal. Ask the students about their projects. Where did they get the idea? Why did they choose these materials? What is something they learned while making it? etc. Another way you can support these projects is by donating recycled materials. Especially we need things like cardboard boxes (tissue boxes, cereal boxes, shoe boxes, food delivery boxes), tissue rolls from paper towels and bathroom tissue, fabric remnants, newspapers, etc. As students are growing in their creativity and confidence, we’re using just about everything we can find! If you are able to donate any materials, please drop them off in the PYP Art Room. Thank you in advance! Mr. Ron Gresham PYP Visual Art Teacher

The Secondary Parent-Teacher-Student conferences on Thursday, 10th November, were a huge success with over 950 appointments. On behalf of the teaching staff, I would like to thank all the parents who came and discussed the progress of their child/children.

Parents, students & teachers at the Secondary PTCs

On the 9th of November Mr. Jitendra Pandey, MYP Coordinator, held a repeat presentation on MYP Assessment. The presentation was very informative and interactive, with most doubts cleared for the nine parents who attended the session. Thank you to all the Secondary teachers and students who worked very hard and demonstrated true collaboration in producing the Diwali show on 28th October. It was appreciated by parents, and received extremely well by all members of the community. Many thanks to the PTA for organising the event and Housekeeping and IT staff for their support during the show. Twenty-one of our Secondary students and two teachers had the unique opportunity to meet the British Prime Minister, Ms. Theresa May and Wing Commander Andy Green on 8th November. Their interactions with these prominent personalities were extremely enriching for our students. The Secondary staff PD day will be held on Monday, 28th November. There will be no school for students on that day. Kind regards, Narendra Mehrotra Secondary Principal

News from the Language Acquisition Department

This year we welcomed Ms. Fabiana Peinado, Spanish Teacher and returning Chinese Teacher Mr. Edmund Ko.

If you were not able to attend the Back to School orientation on September 10th, you can find more information on http://tiny.cc/sismfl. You can also find us on Twitter at @sis_lang_b

A focus of this year in the Language Acquisition Department is to integrate technology in learning using Haiku as our Learning Platform. Teachers use this space to upload and organise class resources, notes and links that support student learning in a flexible and "as needed" learning environment. But why and how do we use technology to support the learning of foreign languages? A myriad of articles have been written on this topic. Education, especially foreign language teaching, has to adapt to the globalised world and the expanding sources of information and tools available online. Those are beneficial as they provide a wealth of resources and the learner becomes more active in creating his or her own e-portfolio and exchanging with a wider audience than what used to be just him or herself and the teacher. The second advantage of using technology is the accessibility to authentic materials on the Internet. This gives the learner a better insight into the culture of the country and people whose language they study. In the Acquisition Department we use a number of sites and apps which help students expand their knowledge of their foreign language and improve their skills to be better prepared for their assessments. Speaking can now be practised by creating a Video with iMovie. The student records a clip or simply uses pictures and captions to present a topic of choice. Youtube or Vimeo videos are used to assess listening skills and the authentic materials make learning more relevant and exciting. Reading real time magazine articles or access easy reader books on the Kindle app can motivate those students who enjoy reading to access fiction and nonfiction books which match their linguistic ability. Writing can be done on a blog.

Mr. Ko Ms. Peinado

In French, for example, we use the Blogger app to upload all final drafts of the essays we write for our assessments. Finally, let’s not leave the fun out of the learning experience and the students’ top choice goes for Kahoot and Quizlet, two apps we use to create a sense of competition in a friendly atmosphere for the language class.

Ms. Tilton’s students follow a video to dance & learn vocabulary and grammar

There is an app for every language skill and knowledge students wish to acquire and technology can now support the individual needs students have. The world is changing fast. So is the way we learn languages. Teachers, like their students, are excited about the prospect of using new ways to make language learning an exciting, fun and rich experience.
