The Maker Movement began in the early 2000’s and has taken off in education over the last decade.

MakerSpaces promote creativity, design thinking and problem solving by giving students a place

where they take charge of the making. Stonehill students hone their skills in Design classes, and can

extend their learning by bringing those skills to the makerspace.

M1 – M3 Design classes tested out the Makerspace.

Primary students use the Makerspace during the STEM Club ASA.

The Stonehill Makerspace is stocked with physical building tools, robotics, and electronics equipment

and is used during ASAs, and open during lunch breaks for students to come in, explore, and create.

Students can follow guides to learn new tools, complete guided challenges, or take complete charge

and create whatever their imagination comes up with.

For his personal project, P8 student Krish, led PYP teachers in an exploration of Makey Makeys.

We can’t wait to see Stonehill Students make the Makerspace their own!

P1 worked on an animal project in the last unit of inquiry. We recycled some of the junk during our

new unit of inquiry to make our animals. Some of us used cardboard boxes, cardboard rolls, plastic

yoghurt containers and plastic lids to make our constructions.

Last Day of School for D2s – a Day Filled with Mixed Emotions

Page 7: THE TIGER - Stonehill International School · 2018-04-27 · The Weekly Bulletin of . Stonehill International School. Volume 6, Issue 100 . 27 April 2018 . FEATURED STORIES Stonehill

April 19th marked the last day of school, and regular classes, for all our D2 students and it was a day

filled with mixed emotion.

Not only was the day filled with nostalgia and goodbyes, but they also spent time interacting with our

Governing Council (GC) members. They spent time sharing their experiences at Stonehill and gained

advice on what to expect in the days and years ahead from our GC.

The day ended with much laughter (and some tears) as the D1s bid farewell to the D2s with the

traditional D2 Leavers' Assembly. The D2s have been an inspiration and role model for the D1s as

they have shown their strengths and have contributed in the field of dance, music, sports and drama.

They have earned excellent placements in universities of their choice.

The entire audience of parents, teachers and students were carried away by the speeches of the D2

students where they thanked the school, and in particular, their teachers for shaping their future.

The D1s left no stone unturned to lighten the mood of their lovely seniors with their performances.

The programme started with a hilarious skit where the D1's imitated their seniors, which left the D2s

in giggles.

The talented singers and musicians in D1 ensured to enthral their audience with a lovely song, while

the expert dancers lifted the spirits of the audience with a foot tapping number.

The highlight of the

programme was a video of the

teachers participating in a

hilarious rapid fire round of

questions regarding the D2s.

The assembly ended with all

DP teachers giving each

graduating students a bouquet

and memento as a

remembrance of the good

times that they have had at

Stonehill.

The entire school came out and held hands, creating a human tunnel filled with love and best wishes

for the D2s, as they move on in their lives.

From the entire Stonehill community, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish our Class of 2018 the

very best for their IBDP Exams and for their next adventure in life.

M5 Visual Art

The M5 Visual Arts students recently completed their e-portfolios. It was a very intense period and

the students felt that they must relax a little. Therefore, they decided to work on portraits and

experimented with different materials and techniques.

The biggest learning point that came out of this experience was when students queried as to whether

or not pop artists were influenced by German woodcuts, or whether their interpretations in terms of

technique were based on their knowledge of Pop Art. Here is a look at the artwork that was

produced.

The style for the first set of portraits was based on inspiration gained from old German woodcuts.

The second set of portraits were created while experimenting with Pop Art styles.

After this experience, the M5s felt it was very challenging to engage in pencil sketching – doing

stylised work seemed much easier!

Building a Dream House

In their current unit, M4 Design students have been working on building a dream house. The students

are taking upon the role of architects/designers to design and build their dream house. They have

researched and gathered information regarding their house and developed a design brief.

They then developed their ideas and created plans

before constructing these houses. They used computer

aided design software like Autodesk Fusion 360 to

plan and construct their houses in the virtual world.

Once they constructed a plan, the students used

popsicle sticks to build their dream house. This unit

helped the M4s to enhance their planning and

construction techniques.

BOARDING NEWS

Annual Boarding Dinner

The tradition of the Stonehill Annual Boarding Dinner is one of the much anticipated and greatly

appreciated events at Boarding. This dinner is typically held during the third week of April, in

conjunction with the D2 study leave.

This year’s dinner, held on 19th April, provided the boarding community an opportunity to bid a

fond farewell to the D2’s and come together to celebrate another successful year at boarding.

Our hosts for the evening, Shanavi and Bhavik, did a fantastic job. The celebration included songs,

presentations and speeches by our Head of School Dr. Beverly Sortland, D1 students and boarding

staff.

Page 15: THE TIGER - Stonehill International School · 2018-04-27 · The Weekly Bulletin of . Stonehill International School. Volume 6, Issue 100 . 27 April 2018 . FEATURED STORIES Stonehill

Rohit and Bhavik created a video presentation of the D2 students showcasing our memorable

experiences with them. It also gave us a glimpse of the boarding community and how the D2s have

evolved from their initial days in boarding into the young adults they are today, all set to take on the

world. Mementos were given to the graduating boarders and leaving teachers – it was an emotional

moment where tears and smiles were shared.

The evening was indeed very special with an excellent dinner spread specially prepared by Chef

Arjun and the catering department. The bittersweet evening concluded with the symbolic lighting of

sky lanterns.

Thank you to everyone who attended, the boarding staff and D1’s who helped to organise the

dinner and the support staff – without them, this event would not have been possible.

Summer Travel

I request parents of all boarding students to communicate summer holiday travel plans for your

son/daughter to Glen and Glenda (Including weekly and full time boarders) to avoid any confusion

regarding leaving and arrival time for all boarders. Please email this information to:

[email protected]

[email protected]

Please note – Boarding closes from 4:00pm Thursday, 14th June

Boarding House rooms need to be vacated fully during the Summer Break for maintenance.

It is hard to believe that we are fast approaching the end of this academic year. In fact, for many of

our boarders, the academic challenges this year are rapidly approaching. On the academic front, we

have reached a pivotal period for D2 students as they prepare for their final IB exams which begin

this week. We wish them best of luck!

Best regards,

Glen Johnson
