Dear Parishioners and Friends of the Cathedral, If you remember back during Advent, one of the things that we did was sing some of the Mass parts in Latin (namely the ‘Holy, Holy’ and the ‘Lamb of God’). And as I mentioned back then, the goal of doing this, is not to return to the use of Latin at every celebration of the Mass, but to respond to the request of the Second Vatican Council that all the faithful be familiar with the principle Mass parts in Latin. Meaning that it represents the desire of the Church, not a conservative or liberal agenda. But, because the most common objection to using Latin in the Liturgy is that Vatican II did away with it, I am going to quote from the document on the liturgy from the Second Vatican Council: “The use of the Latin language, with due respect to particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 36). Furthermore, the council decreed that “a suitable place may be allotted to the vernacular [English] in Masses which are celebrated with the people… nevertheless care must be taken to ensure that the faithful may also be able to say or sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 54). Such parts would include: ‘Greeting,’ ‘Gloria,’ ‘Creed,’ ‘Holy, Holy,’ ‘Mystery of Faith,’ ‘Our Father,’ and ‘Lamb of God.’ To try to do all of these at once, would be overwhelming, so we are only going to do a few of them at any given time. To that end, during this upcoming Lent, we will revisit the Sanctus (Holy, Holy) and the Angus Dei (Lamb of God) from Advent, and the Pater Noster (Our Father) from last Lent. Revisiting them periodically will help all of us, myself included, grow in our familiarity and comfort with them. To our repertoire, we will add one other very short Mass part – the Mysterium Fidei (Mystery of Faith). We will learn these Mass parts during Lent and then will return to English at Eastertime. Again, the goal is not to switch to Latin exclusively, but to ensure that the call of the Second Vatican Council is realized, namely, that we are able, if need be, to recite or sing the principal Mass parts in Latin. Another thing to keep in mind is that the ability to recite the principle Mass parts in Latin serves the unity of the Church. It allows for the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ to pray with one voice when she gathers together from disparate parts of the world. It was surely the hope of Vatican II, that when we gather for Mass with Catholics from other nations, who speak other languages, that we be able to pray with one voice around the one altar of sacrifice, which makes us one with Christ and each other. There is something intangible, yet deeply profound, about standing next to someone whom I may not be able to communicate with in any other way because of a language barrier, but when it comes to that which really matters – what I believe – we can stand side by side and proclaim together: “Credo in unum Deum…” (I believe in one God…). In that moment, at the high point of the Church’s most sacred activity, I not only know what my brother or sister is saying, but I am also united with them in the truth of professing it. So let us respond to the call of the Second Vatican Council this Lent and immerse ourselves in the language of prayer of the Church that endured for sixteen centuries (Latin was the exclusive language of prayer from the 4th century until the 20th in the Western Church). To aid us, the Mass parts with musical notation will be printed in the bulletin. And be patient, this is new for most of us. It will probably take a little while, but it will gradually sink in, and before long you’ll be able to switch between Latin and English at Mass as easily as you change stations on the radio.

Stewardship of the Earth - As Christians, we believe that the

earth is entrusted to our faithful stewardship. We are not its owners, but its caretakers on behalf of God. How can I be a

good steward? Footprints - Similar to a track left in the mud, humans have left our carbon footprint on the world. A Community of Justice & Love

This Lenten season, join our faith community, and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States, in a life-changing journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl.

Pick up your family’s CRS Rice Bowl at the doors of the church. Through CRS Rice Bowl, we encounter those living in conditions of poverty around the world, and have the opportunity to practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy through our prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

From Feb. 26 – Apr. 5, you’re invited to join in 40 days of prayer & fasting for an

end to abortion. You’re also invited to stand and peacefully pray anytime between 7 am - 7 pm during a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way outside Preterm - 12000 Shaker Blvd., or Planned Parenthood - 25350 Rockside Rd. If you’d like more information, contact John Noall - 216-245-9744 or <[email protected]> or visit their website at <40daysforlife.com/cleveland>.

Give Where It Helps - If anyone asks you for money outside the Cathedral, please refer them to the Street Cards available in the East 9th Street vestibule bookrack. This handy sheet lists meal sites, shelters for men and women, ways to get free legal counsel, low income housing, places to get free clothing and medical care, and a wide variety of services to help people with most any need. Please do not give them cash. A gift of cash would do more good if given to Catholic Charities, or other social service agencies who provide long term solutions to the problems of homelessness. In all circumstances, let us look kindly on those who are truly poor, as well as those who feel they need to ask for help, whatever the reason. Look them in the eyes with faith and love, smile, and offer a prayer. In justice, continue to press to eliminate the reasons we have the poor around us: low wages, expensive housing, and poor education.

The Cathedral Charitable Assistance Fund - Did you know that the Cathedral rectory is asked daily for assistance in filling in some of the gaps in the social service sector? Donations from you make it possible to give this assistance. We are the rare place to give aid to travelers stranded by extreme circumstances. Help with rent/utilities, in obtaining documentation necessary for work, or for obtaining prescriptions is also sometimes given. These acts of charity, as well as helping people find the social service agency best equipped to assist their need, are performed daily here at the Cathedral. When you give to the “Offerings for the Poor” collection boxes in the Cathedral, you are donating to the Cathedral’s Charitable Assistance Fund, which is used to assist the needy that come to us for help. During these hard financial times the need is especially great. Your continued generosity makes this assistance possible. Thank you!

Homily

CreedI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(All bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Bless the Lord O my soul; and all my being, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your ills. He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion.Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger and abounding in kindness. Not according to our sins does he deal with us, nor does he requite us according to our crimes. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he put our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.

God loved the world so much he sent us his only son, That all who believe in him might have eternal life.

Since God has given his love to us, therefore let us love one another. If we love one another, God will love us, and live in us in perfect love.

Everyone who loves is begotten of God and knows him as Father. But they who do not love do not know God, for God is love.

Let not your hearts be troubled, for love has no room for fear. In love all fear is forgotten, for God is here with us.

God is love, and they who abide in love, abide in God, and God in them.

Choir: Set me as a seal upon your heart René Clausen (b. 1953)Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death. Many waters cannot quench love; neither can the floods drown it. Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death. [Song of Songs 8: 6, 7]
