Conference Objectives

Background

In late 2011 the European Technology Platform for the Future of Textiles and Clothing challenged its European- wide expert network to come up with ideas for highly promising innovation concepts, essentially technology-mar-ket combinations, which held great potential for profitable growth for European textile and clothing companies. Many excellent proposals were submitted and assessed and in mid-2012 the Technology Platform’s Governing Council selected 7 highly ranked themes to launch the 7 Textile Flagships for Europe.Since the autumn of 2012 expert groups for each of these 7 Flagships worked to explore the technology, innova-tion and market potential in greater detail and to suggest priority actions that should be tackled jointly by industry, researchers and technology developers to realise the potential and accelerate market take-up. In parallel the European Union prepared for the launch of its Research and Innovation Framework Programme HO-RIZON 2020 and identified a number of grand societal challenges and key enabling technologies to which the bulk of the expected 70+ billion Euros of funding will be dedicated in the years 2014 to 2020. The Textile Flagships in-itiative should ensure that part of this funding is dedicated to textile-related projects with high industrial potential.

Content

At the 1st European Textile Flagships conference, the Technology Platform and the experts that have worked during the last year in the 7 Flagship expert groups want to share with European textile professionals and policy makers the results of this work and showcase the great potential of textile innovation to address the priority themes of HORIZON 2020.After a plenary opening session in the afternoon of 23rd October, parallel full-day sessions will be dedicated to each Flagship initiative on 24th and 25th October. During these sessions the focus will be, in the first half, on longer term strategies and market developments, emergence of new market needs due to changing production and con-sumption trends and new regulatory or policy requirements. The second half of each session will be dedicated to major new technology developments and the results of selected collaborative research projects. The speakers will be policy and programme managers as well as recognised market and technology experts from across Europe proposed by the leadership team of each Flagship group.

Participants

The event is mainly addressed to research, innovation and business development professionals from the European textile and clothing industry, from the textile and clothing supplier industries (technology, chemistry, services), ma-jor industrial and public sector textile end users (retail, construction, transport, maritime), textile-related research and technology organisations, policy makers and specialised media. Conference participants must be permanently based in a EU or Pan-European-Mediterranean country.
