The Testament March 2013 Durham, NC Lincoln Memorial Baptist Church
I was flipping
through the channels
and I found myself
watching House
Hunters on HGTV. If
you have never seen this reality
TV show, the concept is simple.
Potential home buyers put together
a “wish list” that a realtor of
choice will try to find in at least
three homes within the given
budget. The buyer will then
choose the home that will best suit
their needs. This particular
episode the couple who was
looking for a home wanted to start
the home buying process after
they had their first child. However
the pregnancy was unsuccessful,
so now this home buying process
became what they considered a
new start as opposed to the initial
plan they had in mind.
I sat and thought to myself how
many times we plan things in life
to happen one way, but it doesn’t
always go as planned. Then, when
it doesn’t, do we just give up on
that one thing, or on the rest of the
plan? Do we start over and try
again, or do something else
altogether? Or do we just watch
our plan ride right on by? What
do you do when things do not
happen the way that you had
planned?
For the couple on House
Hunters, even though a part of
their plan didn’t happen as they
had planned, they chose a house
suitable for them as if they were
going to still have a family. When
the show recapped the couple in
-by Sis. Chanette Evans
the house, they confirmed that
they were able to really start over
because now they are pregnant
and are looking to have their first
born child. Ecclesiastes 9:11
(NIV) says, ‘… the race is not to
the swift, or the battle to the
strong,..but time and chance
happens to them all.’ Only God
knows why He did not allow the
first try to be a successful one, but
we do know that He has
everything in control.
So what things didn’t work out
the way you wanted or thought it
should? It’s okay that your first
try was not successful. You may
feel like something keeps
blocking you from obtaining your
goal. I want to encourage
someone today that time and
chance happens to them all. And
that delayed, does not mean
denied. So I challenge you today
to stand still, because just as this
couple did not give up on their
plan, you too can begin, again.
HE LIVES!! Begin, Again

and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. 32
And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of
them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

RECALL NOTICE
The Maker of all human beings is recalling all
units manufactured, regardless of make or year, due to
a serious defect in the primary and central component
of the heart. This is due to a malfunction in the
original prototype units code named Adam and Eve,
resulting in the reproduction of the same defect in all
subsequent units.
This defect has been technically termed
"Subsequential Internal Non-Morality," or more
commonly known as S.I.N., as it is primarily
expressed.
Some other symptoms include:
1. Loss of direction
2. Foul vocal emissions
3. Amnesia of origin
4. Lack of peace and joy
5. Selfish or violent behavior
The Manufacturer, who is neither liable nor at fault
for this defect, is providing factory-authorized repair
and service free of charge to correct this SIN defect.
The Repair Technician, Jesus, has most generously
offered to bear the entire burden of the staggering cost
of these repairs. There is no additional fee required.
The number to call for repair in all areas is:
P-R-A-Y-E-R.
Once connected, please upload your burden of SIN
through the REPENTANCE procedure. Next,
download ATONEMENT from the Repair
Technician, Jesus, into the heart component. No
matter how big or small the SIN defect is, Jesus will
replace it with:
1. Love 2. Joy
3. Peace 4. Patience
5. Kindness 6. Goodness
7. Faithfulness
Please see the operating manual, the B.I.B.L.E.
(Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) for further
details on the use of these fixes.
WARNING: Continuing to operate the human
being unit without correction voids any manufacturer
warranties, exposing the unit to dangers and problems
too numerous to list and will result in the human unit
being permanently impounded.
DANGER: The human being units not responding to
this recall action will have to be scrapped in the
furnace. The SIN defect will not be permitted to enter
Heaven so as to prevent contamination of that facility.
Thank you for your attention!
GOD -submitted by Sis. Barbara Leathers
Forty days after Easter, Christians commemorate Jesus’ ascension into heaven. Ascension Day
is more important in some Christian traditions, and in some countries more than in others. In
Germany, for example where it is called “Christ’s journey into heaven”, it is an official school
holiday. In North American culture, despite the much larger percentage of practicing Christians,
the day passes relatively unnoticed, especially among many Protestants.
In the New Testament, the story of Jesus’ ascension is found in the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts,
both written by the same author. In Acts 1:9-11 after the risen Christ had spoken his final words to his
followers, we are told: “As they were watching, Jesus was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.”
For Christians in the past and now, this means that Jesus is now with God. He is indeed “at God’s right
hand” and “one with God”. Ascension Day proclaims the lordship of Christ. First, to say that Jesus the risen
and ascended is at God’s right hand, a position of honor and authority, means “Jesus is Lord”. Second,
because the risen and ascended Jesus is “one with God,” he (like God) can be experienced anywhere. Jesus is
no longer restricted or confined to time and space, as he was during his historical lifetime. Rather, like God
he continues to be known in the experience of his followers.
To use language from Matthew’s Gospel, for Christians the risen and ascended, Christ he is Immanuel,
“God with us.”
The Ascension of Jesus - by Sis. Janice S. Campbell
parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the
city morgue to identify the body of their son. They
recognized him, but to their horror they also
discovered something they didn’t know, their son
had only one arm and one leg.
The parents in this story are like many of us. We
find it easy to love those who are good-looking or
fun to have around, but we don’t like people who
inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable. We
would rather stay away from people who aren’t as
healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are.
Thankfully, there’s someone who won’t treat us
that way. Someone who loves us with an
unconditional love that welcomes us into the forever
family, regardless of how messed up we are.
Tonight, before you tuck yourself in for the night,
say a little prayer that God will give you the strength
you need to accept people as they are, and to help us
all be more understanding of those who are different
from us!
There’s a miracle called -Friendship- that dwells
in the heart. You don’t know how it happens or when
it gets started. But you know the special lift It always
brings and you realize that Friendship Is God’s most
precious gift!
Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make
you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend
an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always
want to open their hearts to us.
A story is told about a soldier who was finally
coming home after having fought in Vietnam.
He called his parents from San Francisco.
“Mom and Dad, I’m coming home, but I’ve got a
favor to ask. I have a friend I’d like to bring with
me.”
“Sure,” they replied, “we’d love to meet him.”
“There’s something you should know the son
continued, “he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting.
He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a leg.
He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come
live with us.”
“I’m sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help
him find somewhere to live.”
“No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us.”
“Son,” said the father, “you don’t know what
you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would
be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to
live, and we can’t let something like this interfere
with our lives. I think you should just come home
and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on
his own.”
At that point, the son hung up the phone. The
parents heard nothing more from him.
A few days later, however, they received a call
from the San Francisco police. Their son had died
after falling from a building, they were told. The
police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken

Heart Health Awareness
Heart Disease is the number one cause of death for
both men and women in the United States, claiming
approximately 1 million lives annually. In the State
of North Carolina diseases of the heart is the
number one cause of death. In Durham County,
cancer is the leading cause of death, but followed by
diseases of the heart. African Americans are
disproportionately affected and data indicates that
African Americans are affected earlier, get sicker,
and die quicker due to heart disease.
Risk Factors for Heart Disease
Age – Heart disease can occur at any age. However,
four out of five people who die from coronary heart
disease are aged 65 or older. The risk of stroke
doubles with each decade after the age of 55.
Gender – Women tend to get coronary artery
disease an average of 10 years later than men.
Family History – Presence of heart disease in a
parent or sibling increases your risk of developing
heart disease.
Smoking – Smokers are twice as likely to suffer
heart attack as non-smokers.
Cholesterol – The higher the blood cholesterol
level, the higher the risk of coronary heart disease
High Blood Pressure – High blood pressure (over
140/90) increases the risk of heart attack, stroke,
aneurysm, and kidney damage.
Physical Activity – Failure to exercise can
contribute to an increased risk of coronary heart
disease.
Obesity – People who are overweight are more
likely to develop heart disease because excess
weight causes extra strain on the heart.
Alcohol – Drinking more than one drink a day
increases your chances of developing heart disease.
Diabetes – Diabetes seriously increases the risk of
developing cardiovascular disease, even if glucose
levels are under control. More than 80% of diabetes
sufferers die of some form of heart or blood vessel
disease.
Reduce your risk by choosing a
