- Purpose: Tau Beta Pi was founded in 1885 to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor

upon their alma mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as undergraduates in the field

of engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal

culture in the engineering colleges.

- We do not want to prevent anyone with distinguished scholarship from the opportunity that TBP offers but if one only wants TBP as a resume builder and

does not want to build a spirit of liberal culture in the engineering colleges they should have only that. The cord

and stole shall be reserved for those who show exemplary character and foster a spirit of liberal culture in

the engineering colleges.

to fulfill their required community service hours.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: This gave the electees a chance to meet with

officers and talk about plans for next year. It is also good to show the upcoming members that even if

one service project gets cancelled, that there is always something else that can be done to help the

community.

III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) Yes _X_ No

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Supplies were available within the office because our chapter

has done beach cleanups before. The only expense was for bottles of water at $10.

Project name: Science Olympiad Date(s) of Project: 2/16/13 Project area: X Community/ X University/ __ Profession/ X Chapter/ X Education/ Liberal Culture College Engineering Social Prof. Dev. Number of persons who participated in this project Members: 4 Electees: 11 (Please attach a list of names.) Hours spent on this project. Organizing: Participating: 6 DESCRIPTION:

I. General Description: This is an event where students from middle and high school compete in a

wide variety of different events.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: To Tau Bates this event was about supporting the

critical thinking and creativity that these bright young middle and high school students are

demonstrating. Some of the events included mousetrap cars, robot arms, magnetic levitation

vehicles, and many more. The Science Olympiad is a competition that starts between schools locally,

then on a district level, then regional level (which is the event FAU was hosting). Promoting the STEM

fields to young students is one of our main objectives and because of this it was a successful event.

III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) X Yes __ No

FAU College of Science

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: The College of Science organized the event. We had numerous

Tau Bates and electees assist in being event assistants and liaisons for the schools.

V. Special Problems: None

VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Many of the new electees got to know each other better.

Everyone enjoyed the event, the middle and high school students said they had a blast, and the

organizers were very appreciative of Tau Beta Pi’s volunteering. We now remain in close contact with

the director that oversees the Science Olympiads about new ways to volunteer and help drive young

kids to pursue engineering careers.

I. General Description: The College of Engineering at FAU celebrated E-Week with a variety of

different events. It was only natural for them to enlist the services of our chapter to help with planning,

organizing, and running things.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Giving some volunteer hours to the Engineering

Department is a great way to show them our dedication to the college. We are happy to help them

plan events, and our members are always reliable workers. Also, they gave us a nicely sized and very

accessible office on the first floor of the new green engineering building at FAU; that’s a nice incentive

to help them wherever needed.

III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) X Yes ___ No

- FAU Department of Engineering Student Services (DESS)

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Six members were needed to plan the event and help with a

variety of tasks.

V. Special Problems: None

VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The members involved first needed to attend a few

meetings to plan the events for the week. Tuesday was a fun day with Middle and High School

students from the Palm Beach County area. They got to enjoy tours of the engineering buildings, hear

Page 47: The Tau Beta Pi Association

from our professors about the fun life of engineers, and participate in small activities. Tau Bates

provided help in all of these areas, especially the tours.

I. General Description: In place of a cancelled Boy Scout Badge Event, the electees cleaned a local

beach to fulfill their required community service hours.

V. Special Problems: None

VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): It was a beautiful morning at the beach and everyone

enjoyed being out in the sun. Two groups split off and walked a mile down the beach in each direction

cleaning whatever garbage they found. Gloves were provided. Sadly, the beaches get totally

destroyed in South Florida because people don’t pick up after themselves. It was nice to make the

beach nice and clean again.

DESCRIPTION:

I. General Description: At this event we assisted the boy scouts in completing some of the

requirements for their engineering merit badge that would otherwise be difficult to accomplish. These

requirements include meeting with a Professional Engineer, learning about six different engineering

disciplines, and apply basic engineering skills to hands-on activities using MindStorm Legos.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Our goal with this event was to get the kids to

develop an interest in engineering. We like to give back to the community and keep up Tau Beta Pi’s

high reputation.

III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) Yes __X_ No

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Our chapter provided subs and drinks for the volunteers at $30.

We also purchased batteries for the MindStorm Lego kits for $10.

V. Special Problems: None

VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): We had approximately 8 boy scouts show up, three one

speaker (Dr. Su), four volunteers, and many parents and scout leaders supporting. We were given

positive feedback afterwards on how much the kids loved the presentations, and hands-on activities.

The kids seemed to enjoy the lecture and activity on circuits and batteries. Overall it was a very

successful event!

I. General Description: The Spring Semester Induction Ceremony, followed by a banquet for those in

attendance plus guest at dinner.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Bringing new members in is our number 1 priority as

a chapter in addition to continued participation of current members.

III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) Yes _X_ No

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: There was no cost for the ceremony location, because it was

held on campus. We had to buy flat Bent castings and ribbon for the ceremony, which was $400 total

and came from our chapter account. We managed to fill all needed induction positions for this year’s

ceremony with our 10 officers/officers elect in attendance.

V. Special Problems: None

VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The ceremony and banquet went smoothly. Not as many

new members were inducted as had been hoped for, but those that we did bring in are very motivated

to be involved next year. To increase our efforts in bringing in new members, it is recommended that

Tau Bates go into select engineering classes to inform students of upcoming invitations. We brought

32 new students into the chapter for the spring ’13 semester.

DESCRIPTION:

I. General Description: To end the school year on a high note, the engineering societies at FAU

gathered to enjoy our annual beach BBQ at Spanish River Park in Boca Raton, FL. The FL Epsilon

chapter joined forces with ASCE and SNAME to host a BBQ open to all engineering students.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Social activities like cookouts are the perfect venue

to meet people from other clubs and talk to them about their plans for the next year. Often, clubs work

together to provide volunteers for events, and plans to host some community outreach activities were

discusses during the BBQ.

III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) X Yes ___ No

- American Society of Civil Engineers (ASME)

- Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME)

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: The cost of food was covered by student organization funds

from FAU. Supplies were provided by our chapter, which were left over from previous events. The

venue was free, because it was an event for FAU. Zero personal or chapter funds were spent in order

for 40-50 people to eat all day.

V. Special Problems: None

Page 89: The Tau Beta Pi Association

VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): A few weeks before the event, the organizations involved

met to plan for the event. The different organizations then went to Costco and got a list of needed

items. After the paperwork was done, the school provided funds. All expenses were covered by FAU.

A group of 40-50 was present, and everyone enjoyed volleyball, Frisbee, and swimming on the warm

spring day.

VII. Index of Exhibits: We were too focused on the festivities to bring out cameras, maybe next year...

VIII. Members in Attendance: did not take roll
