Rallye ‘Round St. Nix Rallyemasters Jim & Amy Tulk

The 2018 version of the venerable St. Nix Trix was run on December 9. The weather was great, the turnout was great, and everyone had a great time.

The rallye started, as it has for the last few years, in El Dorado Park in Long Beach, by the pond. We like that spot mainly because of all the ducks, geese, and other waterfowl. That and it’s a relaxing atmosphere with plenty of parking.

One of the “Trix” this year was putting the first checkpoint almost within shouting distance of the odometer check. That was to catch people who decided they should take off early from there in case they had to make up time later. But nobody fell for it, as you can tell from the times/errors on the first leg.

From there, the rallye went north to Whittier, Rowland Heights, and the Puente Hills. It wended its way along Turnbull Canyon Road, which turned out to be a big hit. Competitors, at least most of this group, really like the “twisties.” Then the trouble started. Nobody’s perfect and, sure enough, we made a mistake. In one part of the last leg, one of the signals that was supposed to be counted was actually not eligible since it was at an intersection with a gated community – a detail we missed. However, many of the competitors didn’t. They were led off-course and left scratching their heads. So, to be fair to all, we threw out the last leg.

After all of this, here are the final results. A big Thank You goes to Stephanie Himmelberger, Leanne Aguilar, Marilyn Gettys, Linda Maxwell, and Michael Roedl for their help in putting on this event; and to all of the participants for coming out to enjoy the day.
