Introduction

Not a day goes by without the Syrian regime committing grave human rights abuses

in different cities and areas of Syria. The Syrian regime has always been known to be

among the worst in human rights abuses, but the nature, brutality, and frequency of these abuses have taken a new turn since the beginning of the Syrian Revolution last

March. Thus, the Human Rights Council of the United Nations considers the regime’s

practices crimes against humanity.

In this recurring report produced by the Local Coordination Committees in Syria

(LCC), we document several of these abuses in the period of time covered by the file.

The abuses are also classified by the severity and brutality of the abuses, as well astheir geographical locations.

The information in these reports is derived from cases documented by the LCC’s

legal and media team, who base their information from activists on the ground. The

information is either cross-referenced from multiple sources to ensure its integrity,or drawn directly from the families of victims.

The statistics for the martyr count come from the Center for Documenting Abuses in

Syria (www.vdc-sy.org), whose database is constantly verified and updated by the

Center’s activists.

Homs

During the period December 16-31, 2011, the city witnessed bombardment with

rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), artillery shells, and heavy machine guns, in

addition to intense gunfire from checkpoints. The situation became even worse after

the Arab League observers arrived to the city.On December 16, Omar Al Yasin was killed in Dier Ba’alba by security forces’

gunfire, and was the first martyr of that Friday.

Nisreen Ali Quatli, 28, was prevented from reaching the hospital for a Caesarian

birth (she was carrying twins). She died at the checkpoint.

Security forces stationed at the checkpoints located near the traffic signal in AlSiteen Street in Deir Ba’alba shot at a vehicle carrying five people. Three were

injured and the other two were martyred. Among the martyred was Malik Al

Jada’an, who had been an orphan from an early age. He was responsible for his six

brothers.

Dr. Mustafa Hijazi was martyred and several others were injured when snipers

targeted a demonstration in front of the Hamood Al Naseer Mosque in the Al-Qosour

neighborhood.

In Al Kaseer, Maryam Mohammed Suliman, 42, was martyred; her corpse was foundunder a bridge near the National Hospital.

Mohammaed Al Hussain Awad, from Heit village, was martyred due to security

forces’ gunfire at the Heit checkpoint. The village was heavily shelled that morning

and more than 15 shells fell on the village. The electricity generator was targeted bysecurity forces, which resulted in a huge fire in the market area.

Martyr Mo’ayed Mohammed Noor Al Qaseem was killed by a Shilka grenade while

on his way from Teldo village to Kaferlaha.

On December 17, a huge explosion occurred in the Deir Ba’alba neighborhood and

was followed by intense gunfire toward the southern neighborhood; this came from

the security forces positioned in the Al Abasiyah neighborhood. There was anuninterrupted electicity blackout.

On the same day, Mohammed Jammal Al Ali was martyred in the Bayada

neighborhood. A sniper shot him in the back while he was in the Al Waer

neighborhood with his sister.

Pharmacist Ghassan Mahir Khankan was martyred when a sniper shot him in the

head; he was transferred to Al Ber hospital, but he died.

In Kseer, Mohammed Ghazi Shahadeh, was martyred when a sniper shot him in theheart.

The next day, a funeral was held for him and other martyrs from Kseer. The others

had been killed in massacres conducted by security forces and the regime’s military

in the town the day before. The martyrs are: Isam Abbas, Taj Al Haj Qasim Swid,Hassan Al Mattar, and Suliman Qarfouz.

On December 18, the corpse of martyr Adnan Swies, 45, was delivered to his family.

He had been arrested before and then transferred to the military hospital. He died

under torture.

On December 24, security forces murdered Ghazi Mohammed Khalid Zoeed, former

Secretary General of the Baath Party Branch in Homs, and his wife Rajaa Mohammed

Khalid Bakaar, after raiding their home in the Baba Amr neighborhood and shootingthem to death. Security forces then burned the house. Martyr Ghazi had been

previously threatened by the regime because of his support of the uprising.

courtyard of the general consumer corporation to mislead the Arab League

observers.

martyred under torture. They had been trying to get bread for people in the

besieged neighborhood, but were arrested and punished by torture until their

Damascus Suburbs

During this reporting period, the Damascus suburbs experienced heavy security and

military deployments, snipers stationed on rooftops, new checkpoints being erected,

sieges on all mosques, and the destruction of shops to break the Strike for Dignity. In

addition to all this, security forces continued their raid and arrest campaigns.

Idlib

Dozens of families were displaced from Jisr Al-Shughour to Turkey as a result of thesecurity forces’ aggression during the period December 16-31, 2011.

Security forces arrested Dr Najib Taher Al-Adl at one of the military checkpoints in

the town. He was taken to an unknown location after security forces burned down

his private hospital and accused him of treating those injured during

demonstrations.

On December 16, in Kafr Takharim, youth activist Bilal Jabas was shot dead bySyrian security forces while he was filming a demonstration.

On December 20, in Jabal Zawia, security forces from the regime’s army bombed the

entire area west of the village of Kafr Awaid and Mawzara village, and besieged

more than 100 residents of West Kafr Aweed. Security forces attempted to cut off

routes to surrounding villages to reduce the demands on their security forces, andopened fire on the residents who were already under siege. This activity resulted in

a massacre. Multiple victims were killed during this incident; a number of martyrs

In Maarat el Numan two brothers were killed, Ahmad and Abdel Hamid Hamdan el

Daris, and 9 others were wounded by gunfire from security forces stationed at thenew checkpoint at the road Salat el Jein in Maarat el Numan. They were both in their

thirties and were collecting their daily wages when they were killed.

The town was subjected to a campaign of continuous raids and arrests. Security

forces used armored vehicles backed by gunfire. There were a series of power cuts

and attempts to break the Strike for Dignity through attacks on shops and threats toshop owners.

In Jassem, on the third Friday of the month, a child was killed: Ahmad Suleiman al

Salkhadi, 14, following his bullet wounds from security forces during a

demonstration.

receiving dialysis treatment as a result of the siege imposed on the town.

On December 13, security forces launched a series of arrests in the town of Jassem.

Parents of activists were targeted as a means of pressuring protesters into

surrendering. More than 20 people are reported to have been arrested using thismethod and among them were Riad Adnan and Adnan el Jibawi.

Abedallah Aasany to his family. His body bore the signs of torture. He and his

In Daqak, a pregnant woman died during labor due to deliberate delays at security

checkpoints. She was denied medical care from Saqilibeh, Kendi, and Jiser Al-

On December 30, 2011 in Al-Hajar Alaswad neighborhood, Ahmad Kaddour, 14, was

martyred. More than 10 others were injured after security forces opened random,live fire on demonstrators.

Hasakeh

On December 16, 2011, tear gas was used in Qamishly and 10 people were arrested

during a heavy security deployment after an anti-regime demonstration started inthe city.

On December 19, 2011, Lieutenant Colonel Ammar Al-Hafal was martyred at thehands of security forces after his defection from the army.

Deir Ezzor

On December 16, security forces raided the National Hospital in Deir Ezzor. The next

day, they besieged the Law and Economics Department in the Al-Joura district. The

purpose of this raid was to intimidate and punish all students who had participated

in an anti-regime demonstration.

































On December 17, Malek Adnan Al-Shareef, 20, was martyred by Syrian security

forces’ bullets at a demonstration in Al-Hamidiya.

Aleppo

On December 20, security forces detained scores of students and faculty members

from Aleppo University. They were targeted for participating in a demonstration,

which started at the Department of Engineering and Technology, and later extended

On December 22, security forces launched a random arrest campaign at the

residential dorms of Aleppo University. Tear gas was used to disperse protesters,

which in turn, led to several injuries.

On December 24, while riding in a car, Hasna Saif Aldeen Aldaj was martyred by

security forces’ bullets. She had been visiting her parent’s house near the Saraqebsecurity checkpoint.
