THE SUPERS REPORT

Things went well at Galon's. Good food, and full

bellys as usual. The whole day went pretty well.

Our web master put a great slide show about the bet-

ter coal in all the areas in Pennsylvania. And

I learned about where some of the better coal is lo-

cated in our part of Pennsylvania.

If you didn't get to run a train on the layout - Well,

then you missed out on some fun, even though it was

O scale! Galon has done a lot of work on his layout

in the past year, providing my first real look at his

layout . A lot of his layout was tied up in the air by

string and wire! He has also covered a lot of area

using his whole basement. I got to run a train all the

way around the layout, an “O” scale HI RAIL and I

really enjoy it. Thanks Galon! It looks real great!

One thing at last meeting was discussion of the

modules, and as far as I'm concerned, I like the circus

Modules. But some people have to re-build before

every show. I'm for building scenery for each mod-

ule.

This could be OUR next build and bring for OUR

Christmas meeting? Everyone who wants to have

something for the Build and Bring get measurements

for different modules, so that way we have scenes

for the modules and we have a Build and Bring? This

would be a different project for Build and Bring and

will get the modules scenery? Now get on Howdy

about it? I light the fire. Now is it going to burn.

Traveling with ……….By Barry Widdowson

the NYC Hickory Creek observation, and having Ray Clauss along is most exciting to say the least. Ray be-

ing our chef and host of the trip to New Orleans LA for Jazz festival week. We had 9 couples from the New

York area. Two of them were Amtrak officials from the Albany area. Both worked together and also were the

best of friends.

I say exciting as I have seen Ray crawl under the car to fix a leaking pipe with a piece of garden hose. On

his hands and knees in the kitchen unclogging a sink drain. Creating masterpieces in the kitchen. Ei Shrimp

cocktails and Lobster and steak. With all the trimmings. Fantastic Breakfasts anything you want to eat. Fruits

Eggs any style, pancakes Waffles, Pastries ETC.

And also the tour guide along the way.

Once in NOLA the three of us Ray myself and the Stewardess went our own ways. Seeing the sights of

NOLA. Ray, an old hand at the city, was able to show us many different areas. But I digress - Ray also is a

restorer of train cars and locos. Enclosed pictures are of the GG1 that he just finished painting.

How much paint does it take to paint a GG1 ?

8 Gal primer 9 Gal Green 1 Gal red 1 Gal Buff (yellow) 4 Gal Black 1 Gal White.

The three Pix are of Ray painting and the finished product.

“Oh what a tangled web we weave...” Last

month I mentioned having made some changes in

the internals of some of the web pages. Alas, when

I ran my oh-so-clever script which reads the events

web page and automagically creates the Events

List for the newsletter, it asploded in my face. I had

changed the format of the entries on the web page

and forgot to alter the script to compensate. Sigh.

I am pleased to announce that Our Webmaster

contest (they did say “enter as often as you wish”).

Our Historian has asked me to mention that he

could really use copies of several old newsletters,

if they exist. Issues needed are: March and Sep-

While riding in the cars of the Tioga Central Railroad, questions

arose regarding what railroad this was in “Ye Gude Auld Days”?

In the beginning, in 1840, something named the Tioga Railroad

was built from Corning NY (where there was a canal) to Blossburg

PA (where there was a coal mine). It passed through Lawrenceville

PA, which is on US 15, right up against the New York-Pennsylvania

line, about 8 miles north of the lake at the end of the excursion. In

1854, the Tioga Railroad was reorganized as the Blossburg and

Corning Railroad.

In 1872, the Wellsboro and Lawrenceville Railroad was built from

Lawrenceville through Wellsboro to Antrim (a few miles south of

Wellsboro) where there were more coal mines. That involved build-

ing a roundhouse in Wellsboro, as shown on this 1922 Sanborn map

(the pink building is the station across the street from the Wellsboro

House). In 1873 the W&L and the B&C were merged to form the

Corning, Cowanesque and Antrim Railroad, which was owned by

the Fall Brook Coal Company.

What railroad was this ? By Bob Netzilof .The Jersey Shore, Pine Creek and Buffalo Railway was

built from Wellsboro Junction to Jersey Shore. In 1884, the

JSPC&B Ry renamed itself Pine Creek Railway. At Jersey

Shore, the Pine Creek Ry split, one branch going to Williams-

port and a connection with the Philadelphia and Reading, the

other going of toward Lock Haven to connect with the Beech

Creek Railroad.

There were other odds and ends of railroad construction involv-

ing the coal company but skipping ahead to 1883...

In 1892, the Fall Brook people separated their railroad

business from their coal business, forming the Fall Brook

Railway. In 1899 the Fall Brook was leased to the New

York Central and Hudson River RR for 999 years. In

1909 all the assets of the Fall Brook were sold outright to

the NYC&HR which incorporated the Geneva, Corning

and Southern to hold those assets. Eventually, in 1914,

the gaggle of companies under the NYC&HR umbrella

were reorganized, merged, and homogenized into the

New York Central Railroad.

So,. ……. To be continued next month ED

Minutes of August

Meeting, Allegheny Pla-

teau Division

Meeting at Galon Tonell's, August 10, 2014

Meeting called to order at 2:45pm by Super Miller.

Superintendent chided members for putting home

telephone numbers on what was intended to be the

cell phone number list, requested members submit

cell phone numbers.

Moved by Howdy Veihdeffer, seconded by Paul

Kurutz, to accept the minutes of the July meeting as

published in the newsletter. Approved by voice vote.

Treasurer's report: We have $4654.15 in savings.

Bills presented for payment: Web site, 2 year re-

newal of hosting service and domain name registra-

tion $190.10, Publisher's expenses, primarily ink and

seals for mailing: $95.76. Motion to pay publisher's

expenses by Gary Lasher, second Galon Tonell, was

approved by voice vote. Web site covered by previ-

ous resolution to pay “not to exceed $200”.

Old business: Superintendent reported that there is

a move afoot to dissolve the currently inactive Alle-

gheny Highlands Division of the Niagara Frontier

Region, assigning Warren and McKean counties to

this division. Population of NMRA members in

those two counties is said to be 3.

Alan Morean reported that in discussions with

Frateschi it seems likely the division car will be a

modern 4-bay covered hopper. Alan is also in discus-

sions with a decal manufacturer to provide division

logo decals for the car. It appears Frateschi is unable

to do multi-color pad printing requiring close regis-

tration of the colors.

Superintendent Miller discussed division shirts

with several suppliers. It appears a shirt could be

obtained for about $18.00 a pop. More information

will be available later.

Bob McKay discussed his proposed operations

weekend to be conducted 8-9 November this year in

conjunction with the division's November meeting.

He requested division sponsorship of the event.

granted.

He requested the division to consider purchasing

several 22 channel FRS radios, for use in operating

sessions. After some discussion, the request was re-

jected. Consensus was that an ample number of such

radios are available.

Participants in the operating weekend: Galon

Tonell, Gary Lasher, Bob McKay, Rolly Miller, Al

Crate. Webmaster is to set up a page or pages publi-

cizing the event and tracking sign-ups. Webmaster

agreed to do that, emphasized that he did not intend

to become registrar for the event.

Motion by Howdy Veihdeffer, seconded Galon Tonell,

to proceed as outlined above. Approved by voice vote.

The September meeting will be the third Sunday, the

21st. Program will be much as last time, Teaberry

Southern in the morning (starting about 9:00 am),

lunch and meeting at Hoss's about noon, Bucksga-

hunda & Western in the afternoon. Larry Brown will

make arrangements with Hoss's for a meeting room.

Alan Morean commented that this may be the last time

the Teaberry Southern will be open. He also reminded

that we are sharing these events with the PS&N His-

torical Society.

Bring and Brag reported by Bob Netzlof. See sepa-

rate report.

Modules: Lengthy discussion, which yielded two

items for action. 1) Modify tracks to accept a standard

9” straight or rerailer track at each module joint 2) Re-

move 1” to 2” from the flanges on the tops of the leg

assemblies. Alan Morean said he could provide “a lot”

of code 83 track for the project.

Galon Tonell announced that the banquet would be

the first Saturday in December, the 6th, at Hoss's in

DuBois.

Motion to adjourn by Gary Lasher, second by Ray

whose-last-name-I-don't-know.

Meeting adjourned at 4:04 pm.

Respectfully submitted by Steve Waltman, Chief

Clerk (with the grateful assistance of Bob Netzlof)

We just experienced

A slight taste of fall.

Time to take making

outdoor projects, like

scenery backdrops and painting trees a priority. Not much

fun in the snow months with all those FUN smells floating

in the cold garage. BUT, Who looks that far ahead???

We have plenty on our plate this fall. Will we be asked to

represent two more counties.? Something to think about.

Father boB wants to start operations on several layouts.

Getting up to speed will be interesting. I used to do this

before the Division was born. In those days the Radios were

on 900Meg. We shared with BABY Monitors at that time.

It was kinda strange hearing the Dispatcher “CRY”. Bill D
