MICHAEL FISHMAN

As United States Secretary of Energy, Dr. Steven Chu is charged with helping implement President Obama’s ambitious agenda to invest in clean energy, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, address the global climate crisis, and create millions of new jobs. Dr. Chu is a distinguished scientist and co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics (1997). He has devoted his recent scientific career to the search for new solutions to our energy challenges and to stopping global climate change - a mission he continues with even greater urgency as Secretary of Energy. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Chu was the Director of the Department of Energy’s

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, where he led the lab in pursuit of alternative and renewable energy technologies. He also taught at the University of California as a Professor of Physics and Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology. Previously, he held positions at Stanford University and AT&T Bell Laboratories.

A union leader for more than 30 years, Mike was re-elected President of Local 32BJ in September 2009 for a fourth three-year term. He is widely credited with revitalizing the union and is dedicated to a member-driven agenda that prioritizes higher industry standards and membership growth. Under Mike’s leadership, the Union has doubled its membership and increased its power at the bargaining table through large scale organizing drives: 8,000 commercial office cleaners in New Jersey have joined 32BJ since 2001 and in the process have doubled their wages and secured family health care; a campaign to raise standards for

security officers has helped 9,000 security officers in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. join the Union; and, most recently, a campaign in the D.C. Capital Area is giving 3,000 office cleaners in northern Virginia the chance to improve their lives with higher wages and improved benefits.

HOWARD ROTHSCHILDHoward Rothschild is an attorney and has been employed by the Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations, Inc. (“RAB”) for over 25 years. In 2009, he was appointed President of the RAB. He has represented the real estate industry in labor negotiations, arbitrations, State and Federal Courts and various administrative agencies regarding a variety of employment and labor issues including a case that was decided favorably by the United States Supreme Court. Howard also serves as a trustee on the Building Service Local 32BJ Welfare, Pension, Training, SRSP and Legal Funds and is quite proud to serve as Co-Chair on the Shortman Advisory

Council and Green Committee. Howard is a graduate of both Hofstra University and Hofstra Law School. He is admitted to practice law in New York State, Southern and Eastern District of NY Federal Courts, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and the US Supreme Court.

JOHN SICREEJohn Sicree is currently a Managing Director and Sr. VP at Brown Harris Stevens Residential Management. John began his career in the not-for-profit sector, where he developed and managed housing designed for senior citizens, organized community housing groups, and oversaw government funded programs. In 1984, he moved to Douglas Elliman Gibbons & Ives and in 1988 moved to Brown Harris Stevens where he has served in a variety of positions ranging from account executive to director of management. In addition to his tenure at Brown Harris Stevens, he is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Real Estate Board of New York

and also serves on the Shortman Training Program’s Advisory Council. His involvement in the real estate industry also includes various committees of REBNY including five years as co-chairman of the Management Council. He was also awarded REBNY’s Residential Management Executive of the Year in 2002.

VICTOR NAZARIOVictor Nazario, superintendent of The Whitney at 311 East 38th Street, has been working in the building service industry for 29 years, 20 of them as a super. He is responsible for 118 units and eight employees, including porters, doormen, and handymen. Victor was a participant in the first pilot class with Douglas Elliman Property Management in May, 2009. Upon completion of the class, he reviewed his building from top to bottom to see what changes he could make so it would be more energy-efficient. Changes he implemented included fixing doors that remained partially opened, installing auto light switches in service rooms, compactor rooms,

laundry rooms and storage rooms, rewrapping piping and switching to high efficiency bulbs. Victor was also the recipient of the 2010 Green Buildings Service Worker of Year Award given annually by Manhattan Media and SEIU 32BJ.

ABOUT USThe Thomas Shortman Training Fund offers training to 85,000 members of SEIU Local 32BJ working in the property services industry. The Training Fund is a joint labor-management organization, co-sponsored by Local 32BJ and the Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations.

Every year the Training Fund provides industry, academic, and computer courses to thousands of Local 32BJ building service

workers at almost 40 locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and The District of Columbia.

SEIU 32BJ is the largest building service workers union in the country, representing more than 120,000 cleaners, doormen, porters, maintenance workers, window cleaners, security guards, superintendents, and theater and stadium workers.

32BJ members work in residential apartment buildings, commercial office buildings, and area theaters and stadiums,

including New York landmarks like the Empire State Building, Trump Towers, Yankee Stadium, as well as miles of suburban office space from Hartford, CT to Washington, DC.

The Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations is a multi-employer association serving the real estate industry in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Connecticut and Northern New Jersey.

The RAB negotiates collective bargaining agreements on behalf of owners, operators of real property and contractors with unions that represent their maintenance and operating employees. They also advise and represent members in the administration of their collective bargaining agreements and in matters concerning personnel and human resources.

The U.S. Department of Labor has granted the 32BJ Thomas Shortman Training Fund $2.8 million to expand green buildings training in New York City as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This program will help train more than 2,000 New York City building superintendents in energy efficiency through better Operations & Maintenance (O&M). Energy Efficient O&M can reduce building energy use by 10 percent at low capital cost, making it the cheapest, fastest way to reduce energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions.

“High-impact, cost-effective labor-management programs like ours are vital to the success of President Obama’s energy and environmental protection agenda,” said Mike Fishman, President of 32BJ. “With nearly 80 percent of New York’s greenhouse gas emissions produced by buildings it’s imperative for owners, workers, environmental groups and the federal government to jointly tackle this environmental challenge.”

This innovative green building program, supported by Mayor Bloomberg, real estate industry leaders, Urban Green Council (USGBCNY) and the City University of New York, provides building service workers with the latest, state-of-the-art practices in energy efficient operations and maintenance. The 40-hour curriculum trains workers to identify and address wasted energy, create a green operating plan and perform cost-benefit analysis for building owners and managers.

“With most building service workers employed at the Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations (RABOLR) buildings and represented by 32BJ, this labor-management partnership is uniquely positioned to give thousands of workers the skills they need to cut waste and costs at buildings across the city,” said Howard Rothschild, President of RABOLR.
