Vice-President’s Report

Well, so far this year 2 fabulous shows - Robyn Brown & Co, plus then Russell Bayne’s great group.

Next 3 show - Maggie Britton & the Col Atkinson Group, Pugsley Buzzard, then the Andrew Sisters Tribute. Do not miss any of these shows.

Once again a big thank you to all of our volunteers & a big thank you to everybody who attends our shows. It proves that Ted [Red Socks]knows his vocation. THANKS TED.

I am going to start a new section in our Newsletter. Any member who has something that could be of inter-est to our member , we will have a ‘For Sale’ section. Watch this space.

Also let’s hear your thoughts regarding possibly starting up a regular Breakfast or Dinner group or even a BBQ, maybe monthly or bi-monthly. Think about it [The start of a social group] and let me know your thoughts.

Until next issue, let’s keep our Club a great Club.

Secretary’s Report - Jules Verity

I had my first visit to the Brisbane Jazz Club on Friday 29th January, chauffer driven by Red Sox himself, along with Bill and Carlyn. What a fabulous setting for the Club! Perched at the top of Kangaroo point, overlooking the river and the night lights of the CBD. Big Kitty packed a powerful punch with her raunchy voice, ably accompanied by Matt Eves on double bass, Coojee Timms drumming up a storm on drums, Rupert Jenner on guitar, Shannon Marshall on trumpet and Neil Wick-ham on tenor sax and the evening lived up to it’s promise of “High Energy Swing”. Rumour has it that they may be coming to the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club later this year. You will be guaranteed a quality performance from a band whose major influence is blues but with strong jazz overtones and the dancers out there will have a ball. All matters relating to membership Ted has planted firmly in my court, so I am handling all new member applications, as well as member renewals, maintaining the membership register and issuing membership cards. However, in view of the ever increasing cost of postage, these will no longer be posted to you, unless you specifically request it, and will be available for you to collect at the next show. Work is under way on our Website, and as soon as it is launched, you will be the first to know. I have only been involved with the SCJC since the end of October 2015, but in that short space of time I have met some lovely people who have extended warm hands of friendship to me. Thank you, thank you. Jules Verity

REVIEW

'THE ROBYN BROWN LIBOR SMOLDAS QUARTET'

On Sunday 17th January Robyn and Libor, very ably supported by OJ Newcomb and Paul Hudson returned for another audience rewarding performance. From the opening “East of the Sun” to the final “Tangerine”, as expected the music was never less than superb. Robyn's voice blends musically with Libor's delicate chords along with OJ's steady bass line and Paul's always consistent and con-siderate drums.

Libor 's chords and solo lines are constant, blending and never leaving the melody too far away. An international star guitarist by far (visiting here from Prague). There were so many joyful moments during the afternoon,

too many lovely songs to record . Anyone in the audience who was present at the previous concert would say “ Bring the Quartet back again”. We hope that can be accom-plished. Review - Brian Fane, Jazz presenter Thanks to John Matthews for the photos

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More Adventures from " THE ROVING REPORTER "

Last Easter 2015, seemed a good time to visit New Zealand. After checking out Auckland and the neighbouring Islands including Waiheke Island where they hold their Easter Jazz Festival, I travelled down to visit friends in Tauranga, 3hrs Sth of Auckland, where they were holding their 53rd National Jazz Festival. This is a "gold coin donation" 2 day Out Door Festival, with 4 stages set up overlooking the beautiful waterfront. You take your chairs, lunch and "refreshments" and just sit and enjoy. There are plenty of restaurants, and good shopping all around the downtown area.

In the evenings in the Concert Halls, there are more Bands you can pay to go listen to. The mix of music throughout the festival ranges from Blues, to Classic Jazz, Swing, Folk, Funk, Big Band, and the 38th National Youth Jazz Competitions.

I bumped into Will Sargisson one day, so had a chat. The Galapagos Duck Band were playing one of the evening venues. On Easter Monday the theme changes to the New Orleans style, and you venture over to a small Village where the buildings resemble "The French Quarter" in New Orleans. There was a "Big Easy" outdoor stage, Preser-vation Hall, Lafayette Church, a number of street stalls, food outlets, and even a Fire-works display to end the festivities.

So a good time was had by all, and quite a different style of Jazz Festival.

Till next time, Keep Jazzin!!

Grandma's Apron

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears…

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and some-times half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegeta-bles.

After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in ap-ples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men-folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.

Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

I never caught anything from an apron…But Love.

Pugsley’s unique brand of piano driven boogie and blazing stride in conjunction with his huge mesmeriz-ing voice makes the ladies sigh and grown men cry.

" Pugsley Buzzard is probably the finest purveyor of hoodoo since Cab Calloway first conjured the ghost of Smokey Joe up from the depths and one of the most dangerously alluring blues singers since Howlin’ Wolf first rasped out Smokestack Lightning.”

This will be a one-off solo performance with Pugsley playing an upright piano (sponsored by Nigel Bland ’s piano
