The Sunday Good News Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica The Church of Saint John Bosco November 9, 2014

First Reading: Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12
This reading from the Prophet Ezekiel tells of the streaming, healing waters that
flow from the temple. These waters restore life to the river’s inhabitants as well
as the fruit bearing trees along its banks. It is believed that the water signifies
blessings, whereas the lack of signifies trouble, hardship.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17
Paul compares us to a building whose foundation has been laid by Jesus. As the
people of God, we can only be solid if we are grounded in Christ.
Gospel: John 2:13-22
Near the time of Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem and saw the temple had
become a marketplace. He became angry and proceeded to drive out the
vendors and livestock. Jesus spoke of destroying the temple and rebuilding it in
three days. The Jews did not know Jesus was speaking of his body, but when
his resurrection from the dead came to pass, his disciples remembered what
Jesus had said and came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had
spoken.
“You are God’s building. Thanks to the favor God showed me I laid a
foundation as a wise master- builder might do, and now someone else is
building upon it. Everyone, however, must be careful how he builds. No one
can lay a foundation other than the one that has been laid, namely Jesus
Christ…Are you not aware that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit
of God dwells in you?”
The church we reflect upon today, a major basilica in Rome, is called ‘the
mother of all the churches of Rome and the world.’ It has a special place in the
history of the church.
We move from a physical building and are reminded by St. Paul that we too
are temples of the Spirit. We are God’s dwelling among His people. The words
of John’s gospel ‘and the Word became flesh and He dwelt among us’ speak
not only of Mary and the Incarnation, but also of the
reality, that God lives in and among us.
How meaningful as we read these words is the fact that the person sitting and
praying next to us, is a temple of God’s Spirit. How challenging for us to
recognize the presence of the Lord in those of our family, those with whom we
work. How beautiful we are as we reflect with Paul that ‘I live, now, not I, but
Christ lives in me.’
As I spend time in prayer, whether in a magnificent cathedral or humble chapel,
the fact is that the Lord is present and that is what really matters. As I spend
time with family and friends, and recognize the presence of the Lord in every
individual that is what really matters. The next time I pass a church, may I
remember that His dwelling is there and also with me. In the words of Oscar
Romero, Christ is the Master builder, we are the ministers.

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE
The Valley Food Pantry assembles and distributes boxes of food to dozens of needy families in our community. We have been asked to contribute instant potatoes and canned fruit for the coming holidays. Please place nonperishable items in the collection boxes located in the vestibule near the coat rack. Once again this year, we’ll be invited to bring our gifts of food to the altar during the Presentation of the Gifts at Mass on the weekend of November 8th and 9th. AN IDEA THAT CHANGED THE WORLD
The 2014 Nobel Peace Award announcement in October was especially remarkable for the hope it gives to children. A Pakistani teenager, Malala Yousafzai, shot in the head by the Taliban two years ago for advocating girls’ rights to education, and Indian children’s rights advocate, Kailash
Satyarthi, won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. Both were cited by the Norwegian Nobel Committee “for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.” The prize, worth about $1.1 million, will be presented in Oslo on December 10th, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, Swedish industrialist. Nobel left the bulk of his fortune to prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Psychology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace to “those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit in mankind.”

Discipleship is the fundamental vocation in which the Church’s mission and ministry find full meaning.
Formation for Servant Leadership: Growing in Faith Together, is an exciting new
lay ministry program recently announced by Bishop Bambera. It provides unique
opportunities for adults who serve the Church in their parishes to formalize their
training and enhance their ministry skills. Following are some reflections from the

An Invitation to Discipleship . . . .
The call to
discipleship is,
first of all, a gift.
Holiness is nothing other than the gift of loving union with God and the sharing of this love in right relationship with others.
This gift, in turn,
becomes a mission
that must shape
the whole of Christian life.
