The Mardi Gras Committee is looking for donations of wine (minimum value $10). These will be used
in a WINE PULL at Mardi Gras (NOT to be used at the bar). We are looking for 50+ bottles. The Mardi Gras team will purchase one NICE bottle of wine/Champaign to add to the donations. All bottles will be wrapped so no one knows what bottle is inside the wrapping. People will pay $20 to ‘pull a bottle’ from the group. They are guaranteed a bottle of wine with the hope of finding the premium bottle!!!! We really think this will be a big hit….since everyone gets a bottle – no losers!!!! We are also taking donations of silverware! We are trying to save $$ by eliminating some of our disposable costs. Knives, forks and spoons are a huge expense. If anyone has an old set of silverware (no color handles, etc. – all stainless steel), we will collect and use it during Mardi Gras. Thank you!!

You will be receiving a letter from Father about this project, but pledge cards and envelopes are also available at the back of the church. Please consider a generous donation as a Christmas present to our Parish. If you cannot give a gift immediately you can make a pledge toward the project and complete the pledge by June 1, 2016. Thank you so much for your participation. If you have any questions, please call 931-636-2742.

Diocesan and Parish Resources for the Jubilee of Mercy
Beginning December 8, Pope Francis has proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy as a special time for the Church to promote its mission to bring the mercy of God into the world. This Year of Mercy is only the third special jubilee year in Church history. It is an excellent opportunity to encourage Christians to meet people’s real needs with concrete assistance and to experience and recognize with gratitude the mercy of God in our own lives.
Special Prayer cards and pamphlets are available at the back of the church. Please stop on your way out of Mass and pick one up. As a parish family, let us make this a special year of proclaiming and sharing the mercy of God.
For many wonderful resources, please refer to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s website. www.usccb.org
A NEW ORDER “O, Little Town of Bethlehem.” A Philadelphia clergyman named Phillips Brooks penned these popular words back in the mid-1800s, but the prophet Micah could have used them first. Micah knew that from small packages great treasures come. In today’s first reading, he knew that from tiny Bethlehem would come the Lord. The writer in Hebrews explains that Christ came to us to do the will of God by establishing a new order and by becoming our perfect sacrifice. And Luke tells us that Elizabeth and John, the infant in her womb, understand that great and wondrous things are at hand with the coming of the Lord. This is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Soon we celebrate anew the fruit of Mary’s womb. As we are told in Hebrews, Jesus’ new order is being established even today. And as Micah proclaims, his greatness is reaching even now to the ends of the earth. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
St. Stephen
Stephen's name means "crown," and he was the first disciple of Jesus to receive the martyr's crown. Stephen was a deacon in the early Christian Church. The apostles had found that they needed helpers to look after the care of the widows and the poor. So they ordained seven deacons, and Stephen is the most famous of these.
God worked many miracles through St. Stephen and he spoke with such wisdom and grace that many of his hearers became followers of Jesus. The enemies of the Church of Jesus were furious to see how successful Stephen's preaching was. At last, they laid a plot for him. They could not answer his wise argument, so they got men to lie about him, saying that he had spoken sinfully against God. St. Stephen faced that great assembly of enemies without fear. In fact, the Holy Bible says that his face looked like the face of an angel.
The saint spoke about Jesus, showing that He is the Savior, God had promised to send. He scolded his enemies for not having believed in Jesus. At that, they rose up in great anger and shouted at him. But Stephen looked up to Heaven and said that he saw the heavens opening and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
His hearers plugged their ears and refused to listen to another word. They dragged St. Stephen outside the city of Jerusalem and stoned him to death. The saint prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!" Then he fell to
his knees and begged God not to punish his enemies for killing him.
After such an expression of love, the holy martyr went to his heavenly reward. His feast day is December 26th.

Prayers for Priests
O Jesus, our great High Priest, hear my humble prayers on behalf of your
priests. Give them a deep faith, a bright and firm hope and a burning love which
will ever increase in the course of their priestly life.
In their loneliness, comfort them. In their sorrows, strengthen them. In their frustrations, point out to them that it is
through suffering that the soul is purified, and show them that they are
needed by the Church; they are needed by souls; they are needed for
the work of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

O Little Town of Bethlehem
There is a Christmas song that says of Bethlehem: “Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light.” Though today it has many modern homes and buildings, you can still see that it is part of “the hill
country…of Judah.” (Lk 1:39) It is not too far from En Kerem, where John the Baptist was born, and apparently where today’s Gospel takes place. We see in the Gospel reading today how Elizabeth and her unborn child rejoiced at the news of Jesus’ coming birth. The story implies that Mary went to see Elizabeth as soon as the angel told her about Jesus. I would think that talking about it made this miracle more real. Jesus is the “everlasting Light” mentioned in the song. That light shines today, not just in Bethlehem, but everywhere that his followers bring it. When we console someone who is mourning, that light shines. When we forgive someone who hurt us, the light is burning. When we teach a child how to pray, it shines even brighter. Our dark streets need the everlasting Light today as much as they did 2000 years ago. Today we remember how Mary and Elizabeth shared their faith in God. They did so much like we do today. Jesus, who seems to be invisible today, is seen in the shared faith of those who bring him into the world by their words and actions.
