President’s Message DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE

BOOGIEMAN??? OLE WAS THE GENTLEMAN’S NAME, AND THE YEAR WAS 1953. I WAS NINE YEARS OLD. WE LIVED ON A SMALL RANCH IN THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS. OLE WAS A CARETAKER OF A PROPERTY KNOWN AS THE “VILLA FONTENAY” WHICH WAS A RESORT IN THE LATE 1800’S TO EARLY 1900S THAT WAS IN A REMOTE AREA OF THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS JUST OFF OF HIGHWAY 17 NEXT TO OUR RANCH. WEALTHY PEOPLE FROM THE SURROUNDING LARGE CITIES WOULD MAKE THEIR WAY TO THIS RESORT BY WAY OF GLENN WOOD, THAT ALSO HAD TRAIN SERVICE AT THAT TIME, TO GET AWAY FROM THE BUSY CITY LIFE. AT THIS TIME, THE RESORT WAS NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, AND VERY FEW PEOPLE EVEN REMEMBERED IT. OLE WAS AN OLDER MAN AND A FRIEND OF MY GRANDMOTHER‘S. I GUESS THAT HE DIDN’T EARN MUCH MONEY CARETAKING THE PROPERTY, SO, TO SUPPLEMENT HIS INCOME, HE WOULD WORK FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN THE AREA. OLE DIDN’T DRIVE… A CAR, THAT IS. HE HAD AN OLD HORSE THAT PULLED NOT A WAGON, BUT A SLED. YEP! YOU HEARD ME CORRECT, A SLED ON WOODEN RUNNERS. IT MUST HAVE WORKED OK, BUT EVEN AS A KID I KNOW IT HAD TO BE HARD ON THE RUNNERS WHEN HE GOT TO THE PAVED ROAD. ANYHOW, WHEN HE REACHED THE END OF THE DRIVEWAY OF THE VILLA, WE KIDS WOULD HEAR THE SLED DRAGGING ON THE PAVEMENT AND WOULD RUN TO RIDE ON THE SLED UNTIL HE GOT PAST OUR PROPERTY. I AM SURE THAT HE LIKED KIDS BECAUSE HE PUT UP WITH US EVERY TIME HE WENT BY. BUT, OLE LIKED TO TELL STORIES. THAT’S WHERE WE LEARNED ABOUT THE BOOGIEMAN. I GUESS TO SLOW US KIDS DOWN HE WOULD TELL US TO BE GOOD OR HE WOULD PUT US IN A GUNNYSACK AND TAKE US HOME TO HIS BOOGIEMAN THAT LIVED IN THE HAY LOFT OF THE BARN IN THE VILLA. THERE WERE LIVING QUARTERS IN

ONE CORNER, WHERE THE CARETAKER LIVED. THE REST OF THE MAIN FLOOR HELD OLD WAGONS. WHY HE DIDN’T USE ONE OF THEM I DON’T REALLY KNOW, EXCEPT MAYBE BECAUSE THEY WEREN’T HIS. ONE DAY MY GRANDMOTHER AND I WENT TO VISIT OLE IN THE VILLA AN, BEING THE KID THAT I WAS, I STARTED SNOOPING AROUND IN THE BARN, I RAN AND PLAYED AROUND THE WAGONS THROUGH THE LOWER FLOOR ALL THE TIME THINKING AND WONDERING ABOUT WHAT LOOMED OVER MY HEAD AND FINALLY I MADE MY WAY TO A CORNER OF THE BARN WHERE THERE WAS A LADDER THAT EXTENDED TO THE HAYLOFT. I STARTED CLIMBING SLOWLY INCH BY INCH, RUNG BY RUNG OF THE LADDER THROUGH A SQUARE HOLE IN THE CEILING OF THE LOWER FLOOR. IT FELT LIKE IT TOOK FOREVER TO REACH THE TOP, AND WHEN I REACHED THE TOP, I PUSHED MY HEAD OVER THE HORIZON OF THE CEILING, SLOWLY, JUST ALLOWING MY EYE TO PEER OVER THE EDGE , MY LITTLE HEART WAS POUNDING SO HARD I COULD HEAR IT. THUMP! THUMP!

BUT, TO MY SURPRISE, I WAS JUST SEEING OVER THE EDGE, AND I COULDN’T SEE ANYTHING. IT LOOKED EMPTYAND VERY DARK. I COULD SEE DUST LEAKING FROM THE ROOF, FILTERING DOWN IN RAYS OF SUN. SO I CLIMBED HIGHER, AND, INTO THE HAYLOFT. I TOOK SEVERAL STEPS, AND THEN I FELT SOMETHING SOFT UNDER MY FEET. AS MY EYES ADJUSTED TO WHAT LITTLE LIGHT THERE WAS IN THE HAYLOFT, MY HAIR STOOD ON END AS TO WHAT I SAW ALL OVER THE FLOOR - GUNNY SACKS WERE STREWN EVERYWHERE. I JUMPED SO FAST FOR THAT LITTLE HOLE IN THE FLOOR AND ONTO THE LADDER. ALL I WANTED WAS OUT OF THERE. SEEING ALL THOSE SACKS AND KNOWING THAT OLE HAD STUFFED A LITTLE KID THAT HADN’T BEEN GOOD IN EVERY ONE OF THE SACKS AND BROUGHT IT HOME TO HIS BOOGIEMAN, CONVINCED THIS LITTLE BOY, THAT THERE SURE WAS A BOOGIEMAN.

AND I’M GLAD THAT HE WASN’T HOME. I WENT DOWN THE LADDER AND TO THE CORNER OF THE BARN, WHERE MY GRANDMOTHER AND OLE WERE VISITING. I SAT DOWN NEXT TO MY GRANDMOTHER AND DIDN’T MOVE UNTIL WE WENT HOME, LOOKING AT THAT LITTLE SQUARE HOLE IN THE CEILING AT THE OTHER END OF THE BARN, AS WE LEFT. AND, TO THIS DAY, I’M STILL AFRAID OF THE DARK IF I’M BY MYSELF. I GUESS THAT’S THE CHILDHOOD TRAUMA THAT OLD OLE PUT ON ME.

AND NOW SOME MORE PONTIAC HISTORY

1970 Pontiac GTO Sport Coupe

The Tempest line received another facelift for the 1970 model year. Hidden headlights were deleted in favor of four exposed round headlamps outboard of narrower grille openings. The nose retained the protruding vertical prow theme, although it was less prominent. While the standard Tempest and LeMans had chrome grilles, the GTO retained the Endura urethane cover around the headlamps and grille. The suspension was upgraded with the addition of a rear anti-roll bar, essentially the same bar as used on the Oldsmobile and Buick gran sport. The front anti-roll bar was slightly stiffer, resulting in a reduction in body lean in turns and a small reduction of under steer.

Another handling-related improvement was optional variable-ratio power steering. Rather than a fixed ratio of 17.5:1, requiring four turn’s lock-

to-lock, the new system varied its ratio from 14.6:1 to 18.9:1, needing 3.5 turns lock-to-lock. Turning diameter was reduced from 40.9 feet to 37.4 feet.

The base engine was unchanged for 1970, but the low-compression economy engine was deleted and the Ram Air III and Ram Air IV remained available, although the latter was now a special-order option.

A new option was Pontiac's 455 HO engine (different from the round-port offerings of the 1971-72 cars), available now that GM had rescinded its earlier ban on intermediates with engines larger than 400. The 455, a long-stroke engine also available in the full-size Pontiac line as well as the Grand Prix, was dubiously rated by Pontiac as only moderately stronger than the base 350 HP 400 cu. in. and less powerful than the 366 hp Ram Air III. Curiously, per the Pontiac brochure of the time, the same spec 455 installed in the Grand Prix model was rated at 370 horsepower. The camshafts used in the Ram Air III and the GTO 455 HO were the same. For example the manual transmission 455 HO's used the same 288/302 duration cam as the Ram air III. The 455 was rated at 360 hp at 4,300 rpm. Its advantage was torque: 500 lb·ft at 2,700 rpm. A functional Ram Air scoop was available, but even so equipped, a stock 455was clearly less powerful than the ram air III. Car and Driver tested a heavily optioned 455, with a four-speed transmission and 3.31 axle and recorded a quarter mile time of 15.0 seconds with a trap speed of 96.5 mph. Car Life's Turbo-Hydramatic 455, with a 3.35 rear differential, clocked 14.76 seconds at 95.94 mph, with identical 6.6 second 0-60 mph acceleration. Both were about 3 mph slower than a Ram Air III 400 four-speed, although considerably less temperamental: the Ram Air engine idled roughly and was difficult to drive at low speeds. The smaller displacement engine recorded less than 9 mpg, compared to a still unimpressive 10 to 11 mpg- for the 455

A new and short-lived option for 1970 was the Vacuum Operated Exhaust (VOE), which was vacuum actuated via an under dash lever marked

"EXHAUST." The VOE was designed to reduce exhaust backpressure to increase power and performance, but it also substantially increased exhaust noise. The VOE option was offered from November 1969 to January 1970. Pontiac management was ordered to cancel the VOE option by GM's upper management following a TV commercial for the GTO that aired during Super Bowl 1V on CBS January 11, 1970. In that commercial, entitled "The Humbler," which was broadcast only that one time, a young man pulled up in a new GTO to a drive-in restaurant with dramatic music and exhaust noise in the background, pulling the "EXHAUST" knob to activate the VOE and then left the drive-in to do some street racing. That particular commercial was also cancelled by order of GM management. Approximately 233 1970 GTOs were factory built with this rare option including 212 hardtop coupes and 21 convertibles, all were "YS" 400ci 350 hp/with either four-speed manual or Turbo Hydra-matic transmissions. This particular GTO in the commercial was Palladium Silver with a Black bucket interior. It was unusual in several respects as it also had the under-dash "RAM AIR" knob just to the right of the VOE knob, and it sported '69 JUDGE stripes, as a few very-early '70 GTOs could be ordered with. It also had a Turbo Hydra-matic transmission, remote mirror, Rally II wheels, A/C, Hood Tach Chevrolet Bel Air, and a new-for-1970 Formula steering wheel. A few 'VOE' mufflers were "Hand-made" for the remaining cars in 2006 and 2007, and they are now available from Waldron Antique Exhaust.

The Judge remained available as an option on GTOs. The Judge came standard with the Ram Air III, while the Ram Air IV was optional. Though the 455 CID was available as an option on the standard GTO throughout the entire model year, the 455 was not offered on The Judge until late in the year. "Orbit Orange" became the new standard color for the '70 Judge, but any GTO color was available on The Judge. Striping was relocated to the upper wheelwell brows.

An Orbit Orange 1970 GTO with the 455 engine and Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission was one of the featured cars in the movie Two Lane Blacktop,

which depicted a cross-country race between the new GTO and a 1955. Chevrolet Bel-air the car, owned by the studio, was not depicted as a Judge; however, in reality it WAS a RAIV powered Judge. They mentioned the 455 engine as it projected a more powerful offering to the public.

The new styling did little to help declining sales, which were now being hit by sagging buyer interest in all muscle cars and by the punitive surcharges levied by Automobile Insurance companies, which sometimes resulted in insurance payments higher than car payments for some drivers. Sales were down to 40,149, of which 3,797 were The Judge. Of those 3,797 Judges built, only 168 were ordered in the Convertible form: RA III, RA IV and 455HO. The general consensus is that six of the 168 built were ordered with the 1970-only D-Port 455HO 360 hp engine, a no-cost option, which explains the conflicting production figures over the years as to how many were built; 162 vs. 168. The '69/'70 'Round-Port' RA IV engine, a derivative of the '68½ 'Round-Port' RA II engine, was the most exotic high-performance engine ever offered by PMD and factory-installed in a GTO or Firebird. The 1969 version had a slight advantage as the compression ratio was at 10:75:1 as opposed to 10.5:1 in 1970. It is widely known that PMD was losing $1,000 on every RA IV GTO and Firebird built, and the RA IV engine was highly under-rated at 370 hp. Overall, only a precious 37 RA IV GTO Convertibles were built in 1970: (24) 4-Speeds and only (13) automatics. Of the (13) '70 GTO RA IV/Auto Convertibles built only a precious six (6) received the Judge option. One of those, a #'s-Matching Atoll Blue/Blue/White top example was bid to $240K @ the May 2009 Mecum Auctions in Marengo, Illinois, and did NOT sell. The low bid was attributed to the stagnant economy, and that particular car is documented back to the original owner in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. The three-speed manual, nor A/C, was not available with the RA IV engine, and the standard axle ratio was 3.90, with the 4.33 being a low-cost option. The GTO remained the third best-selling intermediate muscle car, out-sold only by the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396/454 and Plymouth Road Runner.

Woodlake Car Show – July 16th Carl Smith, John and Ron Berglund went to a car show in Woodlake, held in a city park with lots of shade trees. There was a variety of cars, from low riders & street rods to classics. John and Ron were invited to judge and were given two classes - stock and low rider pickups. They went all out on the trophies, which were presented by Miss Woodlake. POCC cars did well in the judging, too. Carl took first place in muscle cars and Ron took first place in originals. They really had a good time and would go back next year.

POCI NATIONAL CONVENTION

BOWLING GREEN KENTUCKY Dennis Simonson was at the POCI Nationals in Bowling Green, Kentucky in July. He said it was a lot of fun and there were a lot of really interesting Pontiacs there. At the POCI Night Banquet, he accepted the Chapter Newsletter Award presented to Barbara Senior, Pontiacs of Central California Chapter. They said that he didn't look like a Barbara, but he’s bringing it back to California anyway.

Northwestern Pennsylvania POCI Chapter Car Show – Who knew? While

Barbara & Don Senior were passing through Erie, PA on their cross-country RV trip, they happened on an all Pontiac show put on by the local POCI chapter! Lots of nice GTOs, as always, and some really interesting cars, but the locals all agreed, based on a photo alone, that the Senior’s Red Bonneville should take best in class! Of course, they didn’t show them any photos of Ron’s Bonneville…..

4th of July Picnic in the Park "WOW" What a shocker! We nearly had the whole park to ourselves. It was a warm day, but we were under the shade and had a bit of breeze also. Was not too bad, overall, a pretty good day. Some of us brought our classics and had a nice place to park them. We had a poker game going, and I understand that I was the big winner. I think I won $1.80. Now I have to decide where to spend it all. We also had some bingo games going. I think Jack’s family won all the prizes. And we had some great food including Sue’s awesome lemon meringue pies. We almost didn't have a barbeque because some dummy (me) forgot to bring something to light the fire, but we eventually got the park attendant to find us a striker. After

lunch we had some ice cream and some root beer floats. Overall I think we all had a good time. I know I did. I would like to thank all those who came and everyone that helped on clean-up. Hope you all had a good time. Thanks to all, Carl

POCC PONTIACS TO PORTLAND!!

_______________________________________________________ Earlier this year we learned that the GTOAA National Convention was being held in Portland, Oregon. Having the convention so relatively close was a rare occasion, indeed, so Sam & Elaine, Victor & Joelle, and Judy & I decided to make the trek to The Great Northwest, towing, of course. The Fishers and Garretts met early Sunday, July 3, planning to travel as far as Yreka, arriving in Portland in the early afternoon of July 4th. Victor originally planned to leave on Saturday, but, at the last minute decided to do a frame-off restoration on his ‘67 GTO, starting it Friday July 1, not finishing until Sunday afternoon. He and Joelle caught up to us in Yreka at 1 AM Monday morning. After some minor adjustments to Sam’s trailer on Sunday afternoon, (Thanks, Baxter Auto Parts, Yreka!!!), the Fishers and Garretts got an early start Monday morning, arriving in Portland about 2 pm. Just let me mention that all the Rest Areas along the way are well maintained. Victor and Joelle arrived in Portland about 2 hours behind us. The convention check-in process was well organized, and we all had assigned parking spaces reserved for our cars all week long. After checking in to the very nice Host hotel situated right on the Columbia River, we relaxed for a few hours, looking forward to the much talked about 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. At 10 pm, just past dark, we were treated to an unbelievable Fireworks show that we watched from the balcony of Sam and Elaine’s room. You can see a sample of this fantastic show on Joelle’s Facebook page along with other great photos. Many activities were planned for each day. Tuesday, I attended all-Pontiac Drag Racing at Woodburn Raceway, 35 miles from Portland, and the Ladies visited the huge Outlet Center there as well. Wednesday was the day for Concourse judging, in which Sam’s car was entered, and Popular vote judging, in which Victor and I were entered. Wednesday evening, participants were invited to attend a “cruise in,” called Beaches, held at the Portland International Raceway, about 3 miles from the hotel. We were told all the GTO’s would be able to park in a special reserved area. This cruise in takes place every Wednesday night in the summer. About 80 GTO’s made the trip to the raceway. I assumed we would be a large part of this particular Wed. night. Well, would you believe that our cars were hardly noticeable? There were over 1500 cars there. Yes! 1500 cars on a Wed. night in July!!. It was quite a spectacle, and a whole bunch of fun. Thursday was a planned cruise to the Evergreen Aviation Museum, where Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose is on display, along with many other historic and extraordinary objects of flight. In addition to the Museum, there is also an indoor water park with a full size Boeing 747 on its roof with water slides coming down from its jet engines. We got back to the host hotel in time for the Awards Banquet. The food was great. Sam and Elaine’s GTO earned a SILVER Award in the concourse judging, and Victor’s GTO received an Honorable Mention Award in the Popular Vote. One thing I am still puzzled about. Ron Berglund did not attend this show, and GTO’s were the only cars entered, but his Bonneville still received the Best of Show Award????? Overall, we all had a great time, and only wished more of our members could have attended. Next year the Convention is being held in Colorado. Who wants to go??

Elaine and Sam both want to thank Joel for all his help getting our trailer fixed and back on the road on Sunday afternoon. I personally thought our trip was going to end in Yreka until at least Tuesday, but with Elaine's calling to track down a supply house with the parts and Joel's expert help and tool box, we were back on the road the very next day. Thanks Joel !!!!!!!
