The Siege of Leningrad, also known as the Leningrad Blockade ( )

was a prolonged military operation resulting from the failure of the German Army Group North

to capture Leningradnow known as SAINT PETERSBURGin the Eastern Front theatre of

World War II. The siege started on 8 September 1941, when the LAST LAND CONNECTIONto the city was severed. Although the Soviets managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city

on 18 January 1943, lifting of the siege took place on 27 January 1944, 872 days after it began. It

was one of the longest and most destructive sieges in history and overwhelmingly the most

costly in terms of casualties..Cannibalism was happening in Leningrad in 1940s just like Somalia

    2. BRITISH Carpet Bombing Of Dresden in World War II

( AFRO -EURO BRIDGE)NAZI = NASI ( NASI = "GIVE IT TO ME" in SOMALI )- -Try Harder Bitches!

The Bombing of Dresden was a strategic military attack on the city of Dresden, the capital of theGerman state of Saxony, that took place in the final months of the Second World War. In fourraids between 13 February and 15 February 1945, 1,300 heavy bombers of the British Royal AirForce (RAF) and the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) dropped more than 3,900 tons of

high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices on the city. The resulting firestorm destroyed 15square miles (39 square kilometres) of the city centre and caused many civilian casualties. Post-war discussion of whether or not the attacks were justified has led to the bombing becomingONE OF THE MORAL CAUSES CLBRES OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR.

A 1953 United States Air Force report defended the operation as the justified bombing of amilitary and industrial target, which was a major rail transportation and communication centre, housing 110 factories and 50,000 workers in support of the Nazi war effort. However, severalresearchers have claimed that not all of the communications infrastructure, such as the bridges, were targeted, nor were the extensive industrial areas outside the city centre. Critics of thebombing argue that Dresdensometimes referred to as "Florence on the Elbe" (Elbflorenz)was a cultural landmark of little or no military significance, and that the attacks wereindiscriminate area bombing and not proportionate to the commensurate military gains.

Large variations in the claimed death toll have fuelled the controversy. In March 1945, the Naziregime ordered its press to publish a falsified casualty figure of 200,000 for the Dresden raids,

and death toll estimates as high as 500,000 have been given. However the city authorities at thetime estimated around 25,000 victims; a figure which subsequent investigations, including onecommissioned by the city council in 2010, support.

    3. Lebanese Civil War 1975 to 1990

    (AFRO -EURO BRIDGE)

NAZI = NASI ( NASI = "GIVE IT TO ME" in SOMALI )- -Try Harder Bitches!

The Lebanese Civil War was a multifaceted civil war in Lebanon. The war lasted from 1975 to

1990 and resulted in an estimated 150,000 to 230,000 civilian fatalities. Another one millionpeople (a quarter of the population) were wounded, and today approximately 350,000 peopleremain displaced. There was also a mass exodus of almost one million people from Lebanon.

It has been argued that the antecedents of the war can be traced back to the conflicts and politicalcompromises reached after the end of Lebanon's administration by the Ottoman Empire. TheCold War had a powerful disintegrative effect on Lebanon, which was closely linked to thepolarization that preceded the 1958 political crisis. The establishment of the state of Israel andthe displacement of a hundred thousand Palestinian refugees to Lebanon (around 10% of the totalpopulation of the country) changed the demographics of Lebanon and provided a foundation forthe long-term involvement of Lebanon in regional conflicts. By 1975, the presence of a foreign

armed force in the form of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) guerrillas, whoexercised a veto on Lebanese politics, had a serious effect on Lebanon. The militarization of thePalestinian refugee population, with the arrival of the PLO guerrilla forces, sparked an arms raceamongst the different Lebanese political factions.

After a short break in the fighting in 1976 due to Arab League mediation and Syrianintervention, PalestinianLebanese strife continued, with fighting primarily focused in southLebanon, which had been occupied by the PLO since 1969, in contravention of the Cairo accords

signed with the Lebanese government. During the course of the fighting, alliances shifted rapidlyand unpredictably: by the end of the war, nearly every party had allied with and subsequentlybetrayed every other party at least once. The 1980s were especially bleak: much of Beirut lay inruins as a result of the 1976 Karantina massacre carried out by the Lebanese Front, the SyrianArmy shelling of Christian neighborhoods in 1978 and 1981, and the Israeli invasion that evicted

    the PLO from the country.

    4. Creation Of Israel In 1948

    (AFRO-EURO BRIDGE)

The State of Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, after almost two millennia of Jewishdispersal and persecution around the Mediterranean. From the late 19th century the Zionist

movement worked towards the goal of creating a homeland for the Jewish people. Israeliindependence has been marked by massive immigration of Jews, by conflict with the Palestiniansand by wars with neighbouring Arab states. Since about 1970 the United States has been theprincipal ally of Israel. In 1979, an uneasy peace was established with Egypt and in 1994, withJordan. About 42% of the world's Jews live in Israel today.

Modern Israel is roughly located on the site of the ancient Jewish kingdoms of Israel and Judah, that were the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity and contains sites sacred to all of the world'sprincipal monotheistic religions. The Jews were mostly driven out of the country by the Romansover the course of centuries of conflict, although some Jews remained.[citation needed] In theMiddle Ages, the area formed the focal point of conflict between Christianity and Islam. The

expulsion of the Jews from Spain led to an increased, though still small, Jewish presence. Inmodern times, persecution in Europe led to the creation of the Zionist movement, which was ableto win international support and establish the world's only Jewish-majority state.

    Zionism is a form of nationalism of Jews and Jewish culture that supports a Jewish nation statein territory defined as the Land of Israel. Zionism supports Jews upholding their Jewish identityand opposes the the assimilation of Jews into other societies and has advocated the return of Jewsto Israel as a means for Jews to be liberated from anti-Semitic discrimination, exclusion, andpersecution that has occurred in other societies. Since the establishment of the State of Israel, theZionist movement continues primarily to advocate on behalf of the Jewish state and addressthreats to its continued existence and security. In a less common usage, the term may also referto non-political, cultural Zionism, founded and represented most prominently by Ahad Ha'am;

and political support for the State of Israel by non-Jews, as in Christian Zionism.

Critics of Zionism consider it a colonialist or racist movement. Some scholars consider certainforms of opposition to Zionism to constitute Antisemitism.

Likud, Hebrew in full Likud-Liberalim Leumi, English Unity-National Democrats (NAZIS),right-wing Israeli political party. It was founded in September 1973 to challenge the IsraelLabour Party, which had governed the country since its independence in 1948, and first came topower in 1977, with Menachem Begin as prime minister. For decades thereafter, Likudalternated in government with the Labour Party, forming coalitions with minor parties, especiallythose with an ultrareligious or a nationalist ideology. Because of the countrys politicalfragmentation and unique security needs, Likud and Labour have sometimes entered into so-called unity governments with each other.

At its founding in 1973, the Likud coalition was dominated by the Gahal bloc, which consistedof the Herut (Freedom) party and the Liberal Party (Miflaget ha-Liberali). The Herut had itsroots in the Russian Jewish Zionism of the 1920s and 30s and was formally organized in 1948,the year of Israels independence, in the merger of preindependence groups such as the IrgunZvai Leumi. Some of the groups had been considered terrorist organizations by the Britishauthorities. Begin, a Polish-born Jew, had been leader of the Irgun. The other member of theGahal bloc, the Liberal Party, was formed in 1961 in the merger of the General Zionist Party

(which was active from 1948 to 1961) and the smaller Progressive Party. Staunchly Zionist, itadvocated retention of all territories conquered by Israel in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The otherpartners in Likud were relatively small, though they were often influential.

During Begins prime ministry (197783), Israel signed a peace treaty with Egypt, for which

Begin was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Egyptian President Anwar el-Sdt, andlaunched a controversial invasion of Lebanon. Although Begins peace initiative was popularboth at home and abroad, it alienated many party stalwarts who opposed the return of anyterritories. In 1983 he was succeeded as prime minister and party leader by Yitzak Shamir, who

governed in coalition with the Israel Labour Party from 1984 to 1990. Likud was ousted fromgovernment by a Labour-led coalition in 1992, and in 1993 Shamir was succeeded as partyleader by Benjamin Netanyahu, who led the Likud coalition back to power in 1996. Netanyahuwas defeated in 1999 by Labours Ehud Barak, but in 2001, capitalizing on increasing attacks byPalestinians against Israelis, Likud candidate Ariel Sharon convincingly defeated Barak. WithIsrael facing attacks from Palestinian militant groups, Sharon subsequently formed a unitygovernment with Labour. In 2003 Likud doubled its seats in the Knesset from 19 to 38; after

Labour refused to join a coalition, Sharon formed a coalition government with Shinui, a centristparty, the National Religious Party (Mafdal), and an electoral coalition representing nationalistand Russian voters. In 2005 a Likud-led government under Sharons leadership oversaw acomplete pullout of Israeli soldiers and settlers from the Gaza Strip. Many Likud membersopposed Sharons disengagement policy, and in November 2005 he left Likud to form thecentrist party Kadima (Forward), taking many Likud moderates with him. Kadima won thelargest share of seats in parliamentary elections in March 2006; by then the party was led byEhud Olmert, after Sharon had suffered a debilitating stroke. Likud, led by Netanyahu afterSharons departure, fared poorly in the election, finishing fourth. In the 2009 general election,Kadima again led with the most Knesset seats (28); this time, however, Likud finished in secondplace, a single seat behind Kadima. Because of the close and inconclusive nature of the results, itwas not immediately clear whether Netanyahu or Tzipi Livniwho had been elected to leadKadima in September 2008would be invited to form a coalition government. Netanyahu wasable to gather the support of a number of key parties in the days that followed, and, in spite ofLikuds second-place finish, Pres. Shimon Peres invited Netanyahu to form the government.

Ideologically, Likud is both conservative and nationalist. It took an equivocal stance toward the1993 peace accord between Israel (signed for the country by the Labour-led government ofPrime Minister Yitzhak Rabin) and the Palestine Liberation Organization; although Likudsupported a peace with guarantees of security, it opposed ceding major portions of land toPalestinian control and dismantling Israeli settlements in the territories that Israel had conqueredin 1967. However, in subsequent years the party grew increasingly divided over its policiesconcerning Palestine. In the early 21st century it adopted a policy opposing the establishment ofa Palestinian state under any conditions.

The Soviet war in Afghanistan was a nine-year proxy war during the Cold war involving theSoviet Union, supporting the Marxist-Leninist government of the Democratic Republic ofAfghanistan against the Afghan Mujahideen guerrilla movement and foreign "ArabAfghan"

volunteers. The mujahideen received unofficial military and/or financial support from a varietyof countries including the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Israel,Indonesia and China. The Afghan government, with the Soviet Union as its ally, receiveddifferent aid from the government of India under Indira Gandhi. The initial Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on December 24, 1979under Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev. The final troop withdrawal started on May 15, 1988,and ended on February 15, 1989 under the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Due to the

interminable nature of the war, the conflict in Afghanistan has sometimes been referred to as the"Soviet Union's Vietnam War" or "the Bear Trap".

    WAR IN AFGHANISTAN ( 2001 TO 2012)

    AFRO - EURO BRIDGE

The War in Afghanistan, also called the Afghan war, began on October 7, 2001, as the armedforces of the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Afghan UnitedFront (Northern Alliance) launched Operation Enduring Freedom. The primary driver of theinvasion was the September 11 attacks on the United States, with the stated goal of dismantling

the al-Qaeda terrorist organization and ending its use of Afghanistan as a base. The United Statesalso said that it would remove the Taliban regime from power and create a viable democraticstate. A decade into the war, the U.S. continues to battle a widespread Taliban insurgency, andthe war has expanded into the tribal areas of neighboring Pakistan.[38]

The preludes to the war were the assassination of anti-Taliban leader Ahmad Shah Massoud onSeptember 9, 2001, and the September 11 attacks on the United States, in which nearly 3000civilians lost their lives in New York City, Arlington, Virginia, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The United States identified members of al-Qaeda, an organization based in, operating out of andallied with the Taliban's Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as the perpetrators of the attacks.

In the first phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, ground forces of the Afghan United Frontworking with U.S. and British Special Forces and with massive U.S. air support, ousted theTaliban regime from power in Kabul and most of Afghanistan in a matter of weeks. Most of thesenior Taliban leadership fled to neighboring Pakistan. The democratic Islamic Republic ofAfghanistan was established and an interim government under Hamid Karzai was created whichwas also democratically elected by the Afghan people in the 2004 general elections. TheInternational Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was established by the UN Security Council atthe end of December 2001 to secure Kabul and the surrounding areas. NATO assumed control of

The stated aim of the invasion was to find Osama bin Laden and other high-ranking al-Qaedamembers to be put on trial, to destroy the organization of al-Qaeda, and to remove the Taliban

The Somali Civil War is an ongoing civil war taking place in Somalia. It began in 1991, when acoalition of clan-based armed opposition groups ousted the nation's long-standing militarygovernment.

Various factions began competing for influence in the power vacuum that followed, whichprecipitated an aborted UN peacekeeping attempt in the mid-1990s. A period of decentralizationensued, characterized by a return to customary and religious law in many areas as well as theestablishment of autonomous regional governments in the northern part of the country. The early2000s saw the creation of fledgling interim federal administrations, culminating in theestablishment of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in 2004. In 2006, the TFG, assistedby Ethiopian troops, assumed control of most of the nation's southern conflict zones from thenewly formed Islamic Courts Union (ICU). The ICU subsequently splintered into more radicalgroups, notably Al-Shabaab, which have since been fighting the Transitional FederalGovernment and its AMISOM allies for control of the region. In 2011, a coordinated militaryoperation between the Somali military and multinational forces began, which is believed torepresent one of the final stages in the war's Islamist insurgency.

During the final stages of World War II in 1945, the United States conducted two atomicbombings against the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. These attacks are the only useof nuclear weapons in war to date.

Following a firebombing campaign that destroyed many Japanese cities, the Allies prepared for a

costly invasion of Japan. The war in Europe ended when Nazi Germany signed its instrument ofsurrender on 8 May, but the Pacific War continued. Together with the United Kingdom and theRepublic of China, the United States called for a surrender of Japan in the Potsdam Declarationon 26 July 1945, threatening Japan with "prompt and utter destruction". The Japanesegovernment ignored this ultimatum, and two nuclear weapons developed by the ManhattanProject were deployed. Little Boy was dropped on the city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945,followed by the Fat Man over Nagasaki on 9 August.

Within the first two to four months of the bombings, the acute effects killed 90,000166,000people in Hiroshima and 60,00080,000 in Nagasaki, with roughly half of the deaths in each cityoccurring on the first day. The Hiroshima prefecture health department estimated that, of the

people who died on the day of the explosion, 60% died from flash or flame burns, 30% fromfalling debris and 10% from other causes. During the following months, large numbers died fromthe effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness. In a U.S.estimate of the total immediate and short term cause of death, 1520% died from radiationsickness, 2030% from burns, and 5060% from other injuries, compounded by illness. In bothcities, most of the dead were civilians, although Hiroshima had a sizeable garrison.

On 15 August, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan announced its surrender to theAllies, signing the Instrument of Surrender on 2 September, officially ending World War II. Thebombings led, in part, to post-war Japan's adopting Three Non-Nuclear Principles, forbidding thenation from nuclear armament. The role of the bombings in Japan's surrender and their ethical

    justification are still debated.

    8.UKRAINE ATOMIC PLANT ACCIDENTCHERNOBYL - APRIL - 26 - 1986.

    (Updated September 2011)

NAZI = NASI ( NASI = "GIVE IT TO ME" in SOMALI )- -Try Harder Bitches! The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated

with inadequately trained personnel. The resulting steam explosion and fires released at least 5% of the radioactive reactor core

into the atmosphere and downwind. Two Chernobyl plant workers died on the night of the accident, and a further 28 people died

within a few weeks as a result of acute radiation poisoning.

UNSCEAR says that apart from increased thyroid cancers, "there is no evidence of a majorpublic health impact attributable to radiation exposure 20 years after the accident."

Resettlement of areas from which people were relocated is ongoing. The April 1986 disaster at the Chernobylanuclear power plant in Ukraine was the product of a

flawed Soviet reactor design coupled with serious mistakes made by the plant operators

    b

. It wasa direct consequence of Cold War isolation and the resulting lack of any safety culture.

The accident destroyed the Chernobyl 4 reactor, killing 30 operators and firemen within threemonths and several further deaths later. One person was killed immediately and a second died inhospital soon after as a result of injuries received. Another person is reported to have died at thetime from a coronary thrombosisc. Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) was originally diagnosed in237 people on-site and involved with the clean-up and it was later confirmed in 134 cases. Ofthese, 28 people died as a result of ARS within a few weeks of the accident. Nineteen moresubsequently died between 1987 and 2004 but their deaths cannot necessarily be attributed toradiation exposured. Nobody off-site suffered from acute radiation effects although a largeproportion of childhood thyroid cancers diagnosed since the accident is likely to be due to intake

    of radioactive iodine fallout

    d

. Furthermore, large areas of Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and beyondwere contaminated in varying degrees. See also sections below and Chernobyl AccidentAppendix 2: Health Impacts.

The Chernobyl disaster was a unique event and the only accident in the history of commercialnuclear power where radiation-related fatalities occurrede. However, the design of the reactor isunique and the accident is thus of little relevance to the rest of the nuclear industry outside thethen Eastern Bloc.

    The Chernobyl site and plant

TheChernobyl Power Complex, lying about 130 km north of Kiev, Ukraine, and about 20 kmsouth of the border with Belarus, consisted of four nuclear reactors of the RBMK-1000 design(see information page onRBMK Reactors), units 1 and 2 being constructed between 1970 and

1977, while units 3 and 4 of the same design were completed in 1983. Two more RBMK reactorswere under construction at the site at the time of the accident. To the southeast of the plant, anartificial lake of some 22 square kilometres, situated beside the river Pripyat, a tributary of theDniepr, was constructed to provide cooling water for the reactors.

This area of Ukraine is described as Belarussian-type woodland with a low population density.About 3 km away from the reactor, in the new city, Pripyat, there were 49,000 inhabitants. Theold town of Chornobyl, which had a population of 12,500, is about 15 km to the southeast of thecomplex. Within a 30 km radius of the power plant, the total population was between 115,000and 135,000.

NAZI = NASI ( NASI = "GIVE IT TO ME" in SOMALI )- -Try Harder Bitches!

2008-2009 financial crisis, also known as the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) or the "GreatRecession", is considered by many economists to be the worst financial crisis since the GreatDepression of the 1930s. It resulted in the collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout ofbanks by national governments and downturns in stock markets around the world. In many areas,

the housing market also suffered, resulting in numerous evictions, foreclosures and prolongedunemployment. It contributed to the failure of key businesses, declines in consumer wealthestimated in trillions of U.S. dollars, and a significant decline in economic activity, leading to asevere global economic recession in 2008.

The financial crisis was triggered by a complex interplay of valuation and liquidity problems inthe United States banking system in 2008. The bursting of the U.S. housing bubble, whichpeaked in 2007, caused the values of securities tied to U.S. real estate pricing to plummet, damaging financial institutions globally. Questions regarding bank solvency, declines in creditavailability and damaged investor confidence had an impact on global stock markets, wheresecurities suffered large losses during 2008 and early 2009. Economies worldwide slowed during

this period, as credit tightened and international trade declined. Governments and central banksresponded with unprecedented fiscal stimulus, monetary policy expansion and institutionalbailouts. Although there have been aftershocks, the financial crisis itself ended sometimebetween late-2008 and mid-2009.

NAZI = NASI ( NASI = "GIVE IT TO ME" in SOMALI )- -Try Harder Bitches! The election of Barack Obama is commonly described as "historic." But what does that termmean? Does the historic character of his election mean different things to different people? Does

its meaning depend on the race, age, class, gender, geographic region, or political party of theperson using the term? While the most common usage refers to the fact that, for the first time, anAfrican American will be President of the United States, the challenges that he will face both athome and abroad are historic as well: the country is fighting two wars and confronts the mostserious financial problems since the Great Depression. This lesson focuses on the relationshipbetween the Civil Rights Movement and Obama's election, but it also asks students why theythink Barack Obama's election is "historic."

The big chatter over the last few days has concerned the ratings agencies, and whether theywould torpedo the Greek bailout, by declaring a debt rollover to be a default. S&P indicated they

would likely take this step. This is problematic, since the ECB had promised that it wouldn't take as collateral debt fromdefaulted nations. Greek banks, for one, would be screwed.Well, the ECB has a Plan B according to FT. If just one of the ratings agencies opts not to callthe plan a default -- let's say, Fitch -- then it would be okay with taking on Greek debt.Meanwhile, there's chatter from Bloomberg that the ECB could just ignore the ratings altogether, and go on lending as it pleases. So basically, since the ECB is an independent body that can do whatever it pleases -- includinggo back on past statements -- the odds of the ratings agencies screwing this up are greatlydiminished.July 5, 2011

1 January 2001: Greece joins the euro

Having been left out when the single European currency began at the beginning of 1999,

Greece becomes the 12th member two years later after dramatically cutting inflation and

interest rates, and bringing the drachma smoothly into line with the euro. The Greek

government hails the achievement, saying it promised greater stability and prosperity. But
