The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad, will take place in London, England, United King-dom, from July 27 to August 12, 2012. London was selected as the host city on July 6, 2005 defeating Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris. London will become the first city to officially host the mod-ern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948. The five Olympic rings repre-sent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Every na-tional flag in the world includes at least one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yel-low, black, green, and red. The Olympic Flag made its debut at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. At the end of
each Olympic Games, the mayor of that host-city presents the flag to the mayor of the next host-city. It then rests at the town hall of the next host-city for four years until the Opening Ceremony of their Olympic Games.During the most recent 2008 Summer Olympic Games, athletes from 86 countries won medals, leaving 118 countries without a medal, and 54 of them won at least one gold medal. Athletes from China won 51 gold medals, the most of any nation at these Olym-pics, and led the gold medal count for the first time in their Olympic history. Athletes from the United States won the most total medals, with 110.
