Pauline CuttIt is with great sadness that I advise you of the passing of our beautiful friend and colleague Pauline Cutt. Pauline was a much loved, long serving staff member, most recently working in her treasured music department. She will always be fondly remembered by staff, students and families for her genuine care, compassion, humility and dedication and for always putting others first.

STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYPlease be advised that on Friday 8 June staff will be engaged in a professional development day. There will be no classes held on this day.

The College would like to acknowledge one of the Primary Campus Leaders, Alexander Dessaur. Alex collected $220 and presented the money at the BMT. He collected the money from friends, family and others with a letter that he prepared himself. Alex and his brothers had been taught by Mr Mark Beswick. Mark passed away recently after his battle with Melanoma. His teaching has left a life-long impression on Alex. To aid him to raise money for the cause, he wrote a touching note (below) in Mark’s honour.

The College extends a huge thank you to the wonderful Parent Committee for putting forward the proposal to host the BMT and for making it a huge success.

PRIMARY CAMPUSITALIAN NEWSDuring Italian lessons this term, the Reception students have been learning about farm animals = Animali della Fattoria and their names: mucca = cow, gallina = chicken, asino = donkey, anatra = duck and coniglio = rabbit. The students have also been practicing, perfecting and singing ‘Old Mac Donald’ in Italian. The Year 2 students have been learning about the lifecycle of a chicken = Il Ciclo Vitale della Gallina. They visited the Reception class to see the uova = eggs and I pulcini = the chicks. Recently the Receptions were fortunate to be introduced to the wonders of nature through the Living Eggs for Schools program. The students were excited to see how much the pulcini = chicks had grown in a week!

BIGGEST MORNING TEA AND MARKET STALL DAYThe Biggest Morning Tea and Market Stall Day brought the community together, providing a time for prayer and reflection and raise much needed funds to help support patients and their families through the difficult of a cancer diagnosis. The Parent Committee were overwhelmed with the generous donations from families and the many local businesses that supported the event, making it a huge success. Thank you to the Year 6 parents and Primary Campus Leaders who assisted on the day with the smooth running of the event and who also assisted in sourcing donations, picking up cakes and helping set up and pack up. Your help was very much appreciated. Also a big thank you to the SEMP Committee, in particular Robyn Palmer, the Youth Environmental Leaders and Garden Monitors for running the market stall.

NATIONAL DAY OF HEALINGLast Friday 25 May, the Primary Campus held a National Day of Healing ceremony in Founders Hall. The boys viewed a video produced by the ABC network’s BTN about the ‘Bringing Them Home’ report where former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised for the Stolen Generation in parliament.

During National Reconciliation Week (NRW) classes have been engaged in many learning tasks that link to Indigenous history and cultures. The Reception classes painted rarrk style paintings and Year 3 students made NRW posters on You Doodle. The combined excursion to Dreamtime at the MCG this weekend will be an interesting amd fun excursion for the College’s Indigenous students.

YEAR 8 HISTORY - MEDIEVAL PRESENTATIONOn Monday 28 May and Wednesday 30 May this week, the Semester 1 Year 8 History classes participated in a Medieval presentation, where they were able to bring their classroom studies to life. Students heard from Mike ‘Firebear’ and his team who discussed the different armour, weapons and events that occurred during the Medieval time. The students were also given the opportunity to wear chain mail and to launch a trebuchet.

This was the first official event to be held in the Senior Learning Centre auditorium, which was a great venue for the presentation. Below is some of the student responses to the presentation:

“The Medieval presentation by Mike was a fun hands-on experience. I enjoyed seeing the weapons up close and seeing my class mates wear armour and handle the weapons. I also learnt about what different weapons do and who could use them. Although the best bit by far was going out on the oval and shooting things with the trebuchet.” Matthew Lechelt (8BPC-03)

“The Medieval presentation was great. The new auditorium made the performance better as we could all see it from where we sat. I found it incredible how Firebear started making armour from when he was 7 years old. The presentation helped us all have a better picture of what it was like during Medieval Times.” Jamie Porcaro (8BPC-03)

“We had the privilege to have Firebear and his team come out and teach us about medieval warfare, weapons and armour. We learnt about how the weapons and armour where made and used in combat. Firebear had brought replica armour and weapons so we could immerse ourselves in the Medieval ways of war. After we went through the indoors portion of the presentation, we went outside and shot off a trebuchet and learnt how they were used. This was a great way to put our learning to the test as we could learn other things about Medieval Europe visually. All up, this was a great learning experience for everyone.” Joseph Ford (8BPC-03)

YEAR 12 DRAMA - “SECRET BRIDESMAIDS’ BUSINESS”A warm congratulations to the 2018 Year 12 Drama class for their outstanding production of Elizabeth Coleman’s “Secret Bridesmaids’ Business” last week. The student’s hard work throughout the rehearsal process and mature approach to their learning and the play itself was a source of much pride throughout the College and particularly within the Drama department. Their fearless use of physical theatre, strong collaboration and ensemble skills and well-developed characterisation made this an engaging production that delighted packed audiences.

The College wishes them continued success as they tackle the remainder of the course and remind them to be the best they can be in the remaining theoretical components of the Stage 2 Drama course.

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEKThis year during National Reconciliation Week, Reconciliation Australia invites all Australians to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and histories. “Don’t Keep History A Mystery: Learn. Share. Grow” explores history hidden just beneath the surface, ready and waiting to be uncovered.

There has been a number of activities occurring around the College including a display of Indigenous poetry and art created by students, a display in the Resource Centre featuring Indigenous books, posters and writings, and an information booth created by the Forward4Justice team handing out Indigenous Unity Pins and information.

Today 21 participants from the College community will travel to Melbourne to take part in a range of celebratory events, which will culminate into The Long Walk and AFL Dreamtime event at the Essendon & Richmond game at the MCG on Saturday night.

Mr Andrew Spencer - Indigenous Coordinator

ITALIAN WEEK IS NEXT WEEK - WEEK 6This year marks 72 years since Italy became a republic. On June 2, 1946, Italians voted in a controversial referendum which saw the Monarchy abolished, the King exiled and the birth of the Italian Republic. Just a few years later, Italy saw the biggest exodus in its history, as Italians migrated abroad in search of work. Many of them coming to call Australia home. Each year St Michael's College celebrates this event with a week of activities designed to raise student awareness of Italian history and identity, Australian history and identity and enjoy aspects of Italian culture. Students have been invited to participate in five-a-side soccer and Briscola tournaments, Italian class quizzes and taste Zeppole to celebrate.

Are you a champion BRISCOLA player? Do you have a friend who is just as good? Then nominate to play in the Briscola tournament this year! Winners will receive a prize and have their names etched on the St Michael’s College Briscola Trophy!

• To nominate please email Mrs Cardillo• All year levels welcome• Nominations close today - Friday 1 June• Numbers are limited

The Briscola tournament will take place at lunchtime in Week 6
