The Star A Catholic School committed to the Lasallian Vision of Education TERM 2 WEEK 4 – 25 MAY 2018 – ISSUE 15/18 Dear St Michael’s College Community, Master of Education In 2015, the College negotiated the development of a St Michael’s College research-based Master of Education program for teachers, to be delivered in partnership with UniSA. We were pleased after 12 months planning to announce that an appropriate course had been designed and approved and would be delivered by UniSA, with regular face-to-face support available at the College. Our Lasallian Heritage is rich with regard to the importance of the teacher and their development, as recognised with De La Salle being proclaimed the Patron Saint of Teachers in 1950. De La Salle offered, “A community of educators who helped each other, shared their educational experiences and evaluated their pedagogical work as brothers and sisters to one another” . It is pleasing that this continues informally on a day-to-day basis at the College, as well as in more formal circumstances, such as the Masters study. This was an exciting initiative, with the participants having access to a quality, affordable Master of Education that would build their capacity as leaders of learning, develop skills in research methods and allow for the design and completion of meaningful work-based projects aligned with our Strategic Priorities, thus benefiting both the participating teachers and the College as a whole. Ten of our teachers were successful in their application to undertake the Masters and I now congratulate the following St Michael’s College staff on their successful completion and Graduation. Dear St Michael’s College Community,

PRIMARY CAMPUS NEW CHILDCARE PACKAGE

The new Childcare Package takes effect from July this year. The new package introduces a Child Care Subsidy (CCS) to replace the Child Care Rebates (CCR) and Child Care Benefit (CCB) from Monday 2 July 2018. In order to receive rebates from this date you will need to submit a Centrelink Child Care Subsidy Assessment now. You can do your assessment through myGov using your Centrelink online account or through the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app. If you don’t do your assessment, you may not receive any subsidy from Monday 2 July. ADELAIDE ZOO AND BOTANIC GARDENS EXCURSION The Year 2s went to the Adelaide Zoo and Botanic Gardens on Wednesday for their Investigation Unit about rainforests. As you can see they had a lot of fun and saw some interesting animals.

SECONDARY CAMPUS BATTLEFIELDS OF THE WESTERN FRONT AND FRANCE, APRIL 2019 POSITION AVAILABLE The College is currently in the process of organising the 2019 study tour of France and the battlefields of the Western Front. A position has become available for the 2019 France Trip. If your child is currently in Year 9 or Year 10 and is interested in participating in this once in a lifetime opportunity, please contact Ms Lisa Baldwin at the College on 8356 5966 to discuss any further details regarding the trip. The trip will take place in the April 2019 School Holidays and the itinerary includes staying in Paris with excursions to Reims, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Versailles and Notre Dame. Students and staff will also stay on the Western Front in Lille, on the border of Belgium, and Amiens and visit the Somme. YEAR 11 AND 12 ITALIAN IMMERSION CAMP After a delayed departure due to events beyond our control, the Year 11-12 Italian students and Signora Benedetti, Signora Puglia and Signor DeLorenzis departed for the annual Italian Immersion Camp, an intensive, exhausting but extremely beneficial experience which sees them specifically required to communicate in Italian over two days. A variety of carefully designed activities allowed students to expand their vocabulary and understanding of key grammatical points, within the context of current topics of study (Year 11: Italian cuisine; Year 12: film study on stereotypes). Individual, pair and group work saw them interview each other, perform skits, sing songs, play games and review the venues. In addition, they learned about table etiquette, Italian breakfast traditions, stereotypes associated with southern and northern Italians, as well as the history of the Serafino and Vasarelli families, two significant Italian families in McLaren Vale. While the weather limited the activities we could do outdoors, the students learned how to describe the environment and were asked to use their ICT skills to record a brief video advertisement showcasing Serafino’s location, which they had to then narrate in Italian. Being required to function in another language, while challenging, also allowed them to develop empathy towards people for whom English is a second language. "During this excursion I feel that my Italian vocabulary has grown and I have developed new and improved ways of learning Italian. I really enjoyed the activities because they were quite fun and got us thinking on our feet. I feel that it helped students build new relationships with other students and especially the teachers. One of my favourite games was "Dammi la penna" and the Scramblinator. It was very beneficial because we had to speak Italian the whole duration of our time spent there." - Marcella Scappatura (11PC-01) "Durante questi due giorni, abbiamo fatto tante attività. Abbiamo imparato nuove espressioni, abbiamo guardato il film Benvenuti al Sud, abbiamo trovato gli stereotipi e le differenze tra il Nord e il Sud, e molto importante abbiamo gustato nuovi cibi. Mi è piaciuto questo "immersion camp" e I would like to come again next year!" - Vincenzo Triulcio (11PC-10) "We covered a lot of work and played some fun games. I have learned some new vocabulary and the passato prossimo rule. I enjoyed those lessons and also the games "Dammi la penna" and the Scramblinator. “We participated in a number of fun yet challenging activities in groups and by ourselves. The activities explored vocabulary, grammar and the difference in food and people from different regions and particularly the contrasts and stereotypes from the north and South of Italy". - Chiara Carzo (11PC-05) “Il campeggio è stato molto benefico e ha sviluppato la mia lingua. È stato utile ripassare le parole e espressioni che abbiamo usato l’anno scorso e anche imparare cose nuove, come descrivere un panorama e usare meglio i pronomi diretti. La mia attività preferita è stata creare la pubblicità perchè ha rotto il ghiaccio con gli altri studenti. Mi è piaciuto il film perchè è veramente buffo e ho imparato tanto degli stereotipi del Nord e del Sud.” - Olivia Paterson (12PC-01) “Il cibo da Vasarelli era squisito! Ho mangiato la pasta vegetariana con fave, ravanelli, peperoni, cipolla rossa, pesto agli spinaci e menta e ricotta salata e non vedo l’ora di cucinarla a casa!” - Marie Borg (12PC-05) “La mia attività preferita è stata guardare il film, Benvenuti al Sud, perché è molto buffo e interessante. Ci sono tanti stereotipi che non sono veri. Adesso mi sono reso conto che so più di quel che pensavo e penso che il mio italiano sia migliorato dall’anno scorso! Inoltre mi è piaciuto creare il video per promuovere la regione di McLaren Vale perché è stato divertente e ho lavorato con studenti che non conoscevo bene. In generale il campeggio è stato favoloso e non volevo ritornare a scuola!!!” - Anthony Marinelli (12PC-10) “Durante il campeggio ho fatto tante attività diverse che mi hanno aiutato a sviluppare il mio italiano. Secondo me, ho trovato ‘the Scramblinator’ più utile perché mi ha aiutato a scrivere le frasi nell’ordine giusto. Mi sono stancata ma è valso la pena perché ho imparato molto!” - Isabella Candeloro (12PC-02) It was extremely satisfying to see many students' skills grow as they pushed themselves to think quickly and use more Italian to express their opinions or understanding of the content covered. It was also pleasing to see them collaborating and supporting each other as they rose to the challenge of communicating in a second language. Whilst it was exhausting, the students were rewarded with not only enhanced language skills, but also superb accommodation, gourmet dinner and breakfast at Serafino’s and delicious lunch at Vasarelli’s… certainly the most luxurious school camp any student is ever likely to experience!

MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS-COUNTRY Friday of Week 3, all students in the Middle School (Year 7 - 9) participated in the annual Cross-Country & House Sports Competition. This day involves each year level participating in a rotation of Cross-Country Running, Netball and Tug-O-War. The students are to be congratulated for their level of participation and enthusiasm. Overall winners on the day were Mackillop House (White), who just managed to beat Mutien House (Green) and win the Br. Chris Gorringe House Sports Cup. Winners of the Geoff Cornish Spirit & Sportsmanship Cup was Solomon House (Yellow). This event is proving to be an enjoyable day on the College calendar for Middle School students and will only get better into the future.

education and employment event in South Australia. The event offers the opportunity for students, job seekers and career changers to

connect with organisations for guidance, clarity and opportunities in relation to career options. The website has an interesting list of

This is always a great opportunity for those not necessarily going on to a full Bachelors degree at University, as many other non-uni

GIRLS KNOCKOUT FOOTBALL The SMC U/15 girls football side played their first round of the KO competition against Henley High and Cabra on Wednesday. The girls played skilful football to defeat Henley in the first game by 7 goals with strong running and excellent delivery of the ball up forward. In game 2, SMC played Cabra who had also defeated Henley High and it was a physical and torrid game at times. All players competed strongly in all positions and every player was able to match all aspects of Cabra's approach to the game. Overall, SMC won the game by 6 goals and are through to round 2 of the competition. We are very proud of all players in their endeavour and approach to football and to “being the best they can be!“

EMMANUEL VERBI - DRAGO’S FOOTBALL ACADEMY Congratulations to year 11 student Emmanuel Verbi (pictured with Coach Drago Kljajic) who has been selected to train in Drago’s Football Academy in Novi Sad, Serbia. Emmanuel will train twice a day with one of Serbia’s best Football Clubs, FK Vojvodina’s Youth Team. Additionally, he will be playing league friendly matches with FK Vojvodina and participating in private training sessions with other private academies. Emmanuel will also be staying at the Football Federation of Serbia and have trainings conducted by Serbian national team coaches and legends of the game. This experience will benefit Emmanuel in numerous ways and assist him in achieving his goal of becoming a professional footballer. We wish Emmanuel all the best whilst he undertakes this rare opportunity.
