Reviving the column devoted to questions about Jewish history called

ThePeopleofChelmWantToKnow…This column was revived just over a year ago in The Star after a decade of dormancy. Each month there are now two fairly difficult questions, and you should be congratulated for trying to wrestle with them. If you do not know an answer, you will find it elsewhere in this issue of The Star. Please share your new knowledge with your neighbors, fellow congregants, and especially the people of Chelm. In Jewish folklore, the people of Chelm were famed for coming up with bizarre and usually incorrect answers to even the simplest questions.

1. This year on the 18th of January Beth Elohim will be the host for a Martin Luther King Day tribute for the 19th consecutive year. In years past, this has been a very lively breakfast gathering, attended by many interested people from Acton and neighboring towns. In these pandemic times, this year’s event must be a Zoom gathering, as we honor one of the most influential Americans and world citizens of the past century. For over five decades, Dr. King’s visions and oratory have inspired the country and fueled the still unfinished civil rights movement. His words struck a very deep chord with African-Americans, and also among Jews, many of whom eagerly joined his cause. Some even died for it, like Andrew Goodman and Mickey Schwerner, murdered by the Ku Klux Klan during the hot Mississippi summer of 1964. Black-Jewish relations were never stronger than when Dr.

King was the central voice of the civil rights movement, before his 1968 assassination in Memphis. Besides inspired leaders and workers, however, community organizations also need money to make an impact. Were Jewish people as generous with dollars as they were with sympathy for the civil rights cause?

2. This January will also see the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris and hopefully this will also mark an end to a chaotic period in American foreign policy—a time characterized by strained relationships with key allies, deference to dictators, and abuse and even cruelty towards refugees and immigrants. Some of the new administration’s effort will be focused on repairing core multilateral relationships, like the Paris Climate Agreement and the United Nations. Whatever we think of its operations, the United Nations is still an important player in today’s global village. Though its members periodically co-opt it for their own ends, the UN was founded on the lofty goal of advancing the fortunes of all nations and of promoting peace on our earth. These principles are captured in the engraving on the cornerstone of UN Building in New York. The inscription reads “And they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore”. These lofty words are found in which book of the Bible a) Isaiah, b) Ecclesiastes, c) Samuel, or d) Ezekiel?

I hope everyone had a wonderful Chanukah and is enjoying the holiday season with loved ones.

As Jews, we have the opportunity to reflect on the past year not only once, but twice. This year, it is much less joyous to look back. Every minute watching CNN is a reminder (not that this is needed); where the top right corner shows the ultimate human toll of the pandemic. But this is, of course, only part of the tragedies caused by the pandemic. There is so much more, both nationally and in our community. I will not use this space to ‘look back,’ there are plenty ‘year in review’ articles from professionals that cover this much better than I could ever attempt. I do want to point out that we still have money available in the Zeh B’zeh fund. This is the fund which was established to assist fellow congregants and other community members going through a rough financial time. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Rabbi. This will be kept confidential.

Despite the challenges we are facing every day, the past year was also a time that has brought out the best in many people. First and foremost, the frontline workers who put their own health and safety on the line to care for others. We are privileged to have many frontline workers as members. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your dedication and commitment. It is important to focus on the positive:

• I want to take the opportunity once again to thank all of the professional staff. I am so proud of all of them and what they achieved individually and as a team. From one day to the other, everyone pivoted from working in the office to working at home, from in person activities to online (and back to in person for our Early Learning Center). I am impressed how everyone responded to the new requirements, the resilience they showed, working tirelessly to not allow disruption in programming and Services.

• During the pandemic we’ve had some amazing virtual community events. First the High Holidays, which were truly special.

Congregation Beth Elohim THE STAR January 2021And then, most recently, the community Chanukah celebrations. Literally, eight crazy nights of celebration, learning, togetherness and lights for children, young adults, families, bakers, cooks, artists, etc. I am so appreciative for the leadership of Jaymi and Joe Formaggio who masterfully coordinated these events. I also want to thank the various committees, team education, Brotherhood and Sisterhood who took ownership to organize one of the eight nights. Thank you all for your creativity and collaboration.

• I also want to take this opportunity to thankall our volunteers from those involved insupporting single events to the members ofthe Board of Directors and the manycommittees. The good thing is there are somany of you. The bad thing is there are somany of you that I can’t thank you allpersonally. Without our volunteers therewould be no CBE. Thank you!

Looking forward at the CBE calendar on our website, we have our recurring events such as services, religious school, family education, Torah study, Bible and Bourbon, Brotherhood, and Sisterhood events. But in January and February, we will also have two of our most popular events:

• January 18: Our 19th Annual Martin LutherKing, Jr. Tribute

• Weekend of February 12: The excitingScholar in Residence Weekend organized byAdult Ed. This year, featuring RuthMessinger who will speak on Friday evening,Saturday morning and Sunday morning.

I hope you will join as much as possible.

As mentioned in a separate email last month, it was with a mix of sadness and gratitude to see Ezra Habif leave CBE. Ezra has been associated with CBE since 1978, first as a beloved teacher in the religious school and subsequently for the past seven years as our dedicated and committed Office Administrator.

Over the next few months, we will be conducting a search to find a new Office Administrator. In light of the work being performed by the Governance Amud, we will take this opportunity to review the role and assess how it best supports CBE. During the interim period, Lori Lafayette will be the main point of contact. Lori can be reached at 978-263-3061 or [email protected]. We thank Lori for taking on this additional responsibility.

In addition, in the not too distant future, we will be preparing the 2021-2022 slate for the Board of Directors. So, when you make your New Year’s resolution (or any time thereafter!), think about joining the Board and be a part of steering and developing this wonderful community. If you want to learn more about joining the Board, please reach out to either Barbara Green at [email protected] or me.

In closure, while vaccinations have started and there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel, it is too premature to make any prediction about when we may have in person meetings again. Synagogue leadership and the Covid-19 Task Force will continues to monitor the situation. I suspect that by the end of Q1 we will be able to provide more specific information with respect to our re-opening plan.

I want to wish everyone a healthy, happy and successful 2021.

B’shalom. ✡

January 2021 THE STAR Congregation Beth Elohim

Rabbi’sPageRabbi Mike 978-263-3061 / [email protected] The word of the month for December was, apparently, nachas. If you’re unfamiliar, nachas is not a tortilla-based snack. It’s a Yiddish word meaning “pride.” (The ch is, of course, the Jewish guttural sound formed in the back of the throat, like in baruch.) The word refers to the joy you get from seeing others’ accomplishments.

And in December, I saw a lot that gave me nachas. At the beginning of the month, the Synagogue Council of Massachusetts honored heroes of the Jewish community. Among the honorees were our Operations VP, George Morton; our Ritual chair, Elaine Braun-Keller; and our president, David Leers. I was so proud to see our lay leaders honored before an audience of Jewish leaders throughout the state.

The following week, Chanukah started, and CBE really outdid itself. Under the guidance of Programming co-VPs Jaymi and Joe Formaggio, CBE offered a different Chanukah event for every night of Chanukah. Beth brought us an amazing storyteller, Marilyn Price; Jon Linden and Ronny Almog led us in our inaugural Great Jewish Fry-off, with the Blumbergs earning the title “star-fryer;” and we had a great time at the end-of-Chanukah coffeehouse. And there was real nachas seeing our first-time voters, teenagers who spoke so eloquently about what voting means to them.

But if I thought there’d be a letdown after Chanukah, I needn’t have worried. I heard from our CBE friend, A-B School Committee member Kyra Wilson Cook, that A-B families were in need. Beth and I invited Kyra to speak to our Confirmation class. The kids jumped into action. You may have read their notice in the Star-lite, but in case you missed it, the students wrote: “Our 10th grade class has been talking about the ways that we can embody core Jewish values. Practicing tzedakah, or donating to the less fortunate, is one of many ways that we can practice the values put forth in the Torah… Many Remote Learning Program families are experiencing financial difficulties and are in need of support this

holiday season in terms of food, clothing, and gifts for children.”

They concluded, “You can help by sending your donations (checks or gift cards) to Congregation Beth Elohim.” They’ve already raised hundreds of dollars. I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts. I hope you’ll consider helping the Confirmation class in this effort.

In doing this work, our students have picked up on the example set by the adults. We have raised significant funds as part of our Zeh ba’Zeh and Darchei Shalom funds, helping community members during the Covid pandemic. CBE members have always known the deep power of the Jewish value of giving tzedakah.

But there is an element of tzedakah that we don’t always talk about. It came up when I was talking about these funds with our Financial Secretary, Kathie Becker, and she said something that really struck me, “Isn’t it a mitzvah to accept help if you need it?”

When we are in need, we can feel the opposite of nachas. It can be destabilizing, embarrassing, depressing. Jewish tradition teaches the giver to always consider the dignity of those receiving tzedakah. But in talking about the obligations of the giver, we don’t always talk about the obligation of the receiver. And, sure enough, Kathie is correct.

In the Shulchan Aruch, the comprehensive Jewish law code, Rabbi Joseph Caro writes that one who needs assistance but refuses the help out of pride, “is guilty of blood-shed.” In giving in to pride, writes Caro, that person acts like an assailant, bringing “punishment and sin” upon themselves. (Yoreh Deah 255:2)

We still have funds to distribute from our Covid funds. But we are finding that people are not coming forward to request them. So I ask you: please help us to help you. Don’t cause unnecessary pain by refusing the assistance.

You will be helping CBE to do a great mitzvah. And furthermore, in doing so, I hope you will feel the nachas of being a person who is worthy of receiving that help. ✡

1. Reverend Martin Luther King had a very special affection for Jewish people, and the feeling was mutual. In fact, during the heyday of the civil rights movement in the 50’s and 60’s, it is estimated that Jews contributed about half of the support funds—far out of proportion to their numbers in the general population or even the progressive community. It is worth noting that Dr. King also had a special connection with the Boston area. He received his doctorate at Boston University. His use of nonviolent civil disobedience to achieve social goals earned him a Nobel Prize as he further developed this great tradition, rooted in the writings of Concord’s Henry David Thoreau, that India’s great Mahatma Gandhi

brought to the world’s attention.

2. Jewish people should be honored that the stirring words of the prophet Isaiah were chosen for the engraving on the cornerstone of the United Nations building in New York City. The passage is from early in the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 2, Verse 4. The prophet's vision of the ultimate reign of God, when the lion shall lie down with the lamb and the sword will be beaten into a plowshare, has inspired many in the western world and beyond. His messages of comfort are read as the prophetical portions in the synagogue in the weeks following Tisha B'Av, the fast day that commemorates many calamities in our history, including the destruction of both the Temples in Jerusalem.
