What are your duties and responsibilities in your job role? Being an engineer in The St Botolph building is a challenge but at the same time a privilege. A typical day involves completing reactive jobs and PPMs in collaboration with my colleagues. Also on a daily basis I am checking the plans of the building to ensure that everything functions properly. My day starts with a smile and ends with one as I work in a striking, state of the art office building in the City of London.

Tell us more about yourself ? I am from Thessaloniki, Greece but I moved with my family, my wife and my twin daughters to London fouryears ago. I studied Electrical engineering at the university in Greece and until I moved to London I had beenworking as a self-employed electrical engineer. Coming to live and work in London has been a dream thatcame true.

What about hobbies?I enjoy constructing small scale electronic projects and sightseeing in London.

Where are you planning to go for holidays this year?I am planning to visit Greece, in particular, a picturesque village by the sea called Afissos on mountain Pelion in the mainland of the country.

The aim of the Building Security AccreditationScheme is to raise the standards of security withinmulti-occupied buildings. It provides a benchmarkof the commitment of property owners to theprotection of their premises, their personnel andthe public at large.

The City of London Crime Prevention Association(CoLCPA) developed the BSA in conjunction withthe City of London Police, the City of LondonCorporation and representatives of managingagents and the security industry.

The CPA Award is open to all owners andmanaging agents of commercial property and isachievable through a straightforward applicationand the review process. The accreditation takesthe form of an award showing the official seal ofachievement, endorsed by the BSA ruling body.

To achieve the Building Security Accreditation, applicants are assessed on a number of criteria, including:• Building to have a co-ordinated evacuation plan

and evidence of testing the plan• Evidence of membership to the CoLCPA and

show how information and best practice aredisseminated to tenants/occupiers.

In buildings where Security Officers are employed:• Security Officers to demonstrate that they have

completed appropriate security awarenesstraining modules

• Security Officers to have attended a ‘Griffin’terrorism awareness da

• Occupiers of the building and securitymanagers to make occupiers aware of ProjectArgus and provide opportunities to attend

• Applicants must be able to prove that thenumber of people trained in these areas is

proportionate to the size and nature of thebuilding. Those accredited will be assessed annually by anindependent panel formed from the followingorganisations:• The City of London Police• City of London Crime Prevention Association

(CoLCPA)• The City of London Corporation• Representatives from managing agents and

security industry

SHEQ- Safety, Health, Environment, Quality

Overall, it has been a successful year for the SHEQ Team with new additions and a designated Head of Department, giving us a dedicated team of four in the SHEQ Group.

Near Miss ReportingNear misses for 2017 has increased approximately 200% from 2016 . The reason for this is can be explainedby two main points. Firstly, the conscious effort from the SHEQ Team to ensure the importance ofreporting near miss incidents was communicated together with clear definition of what constitutes as anear miss. Secondly , and more importantly, the awareness of all IFM staff making the conscious effort tohazard spot and report the near misses when they occur. Without the help and awareness of the staff thatwork for IFM on sites, this would not have been possible – so a well done to all those that identify theseinstances. As a group, we now need to focus on the actions that arise from a near miss to ensure the nearmiss does not turn in to an incident causing ill health.

Change in AccreditorIt was decided back in March that the company would change accreditor from BSi to LRQA. This was a verypositive move and I believe in the long term with benefit Incentive in many ways. Both ISO 9001 and 14001transfers were smooth and both certificates are valid until September 2018. The OHSAS 18001 required afull certificate renewal and was successfully completed in August with the current certificate valid for 3years until 2020.

Introduction of HSE/Safety AlertsLate 2016/early 2017 saw the introduction of safety and HSE alerts released through the SHEQ Team. Thesafety alerts are cascaded through the business and highlight some key areas which have the potential toaffect an individual site or business sectors and instructs on what we need to be doing. The HSE alertsidentify prosecutions that the group can relate to either directly or indirectly. It has been a great way to getimportant information to the sites in relatively short amount of time.

Quarterly CampaignsThe quarterly campaigns have been sent out to all the sites. Each of the campaigns for 2017 have focusedon core health and safety subjects and what we need to be doing on site to comply with the relativelegislation. The fourth and final campaign of 2017 is due to be sent out in early December and will cover thetopic of Manual Handling.

Congratulations to Ana Christina and Nelson to receive an Employee of

the Quarter reward!Thank you for keeping

our building clean to the highest standards!
