District Governor Jonathan Cao-Nguyen

Magic Kingdom Lieutenant GovernorStephanie Nguyen

Hey OCC Pirates!

My name is Jonathan Cao-Nguyen and I will be serving you as your 2012-2013 District Governor, but please just call me J-Cao! A little about myself: I am a 3rd year at UC San Diego, majoring in Human Development. I actually just transferred to UCSD this past year and the school that I transferred from was OCC, that makes me an OCC Circle K alumni! I love everything Disney and I absolutely love the theme parks. My favorite color is blue and I’m a huge foodie. Whenever I try a new restaurant, I’m the type of person who takes a

picture of their food, put it into my journal, and rank the restaurant according to my preference. I like to think that I’m a legit food critic. Lastly, my most favorite thing to do is to hang out with all of my friends and meet new awesome people! It’s really exciting to know that the Circle K club that I joined as a freshman is doing so well and I am also excited to see all of your accomplishments for the up-coming year. With this summer, I hope to see the club very active in participating at service projects and having a lot of socials because hopefully, I can make it out to some of them. Anyways, make the most out of this summer and I hope to see

you all really soon. Never hesitate to say hi when you see me and stay cool! :D

Hey there Orange Coast College! I hope you all have been enjoying your summer so far! For those of you who do not know me yet, my name is Stephanie Nguyen and I am your 2012-2013 Magic Kingdom Lieutenant Governor. I am really excited that I will be working with all of you this year because I am an OCC alumni myself! OCC is where I got my start and even though I am at UCI now, I still hold OCC as a large part of why I am where I am today. I hope you all have the passion for service, leadership, and fellowship and know that Circle K does not stop in the summer! Sum-mer is probably where you can get the most done! So take advantage of your long summer break and show everyone what you all can do! J 1, 2, WHOOP WHOOP!

Hey everyone! It’s that time again; the 3rd volume of “The Squeeze” is out! I would like to first thank EVERYONE that has helped and contributed their sum-mer time to help me publish this. Without your help, I wouldn’t have been able to finish this at all. To all of you transferring, I hope your path is prosperous as you continue your path at your new school, wherever you may be, but remember that you started at OCC. With that, I really don’t know what to say other than THANK YOU to everyone for all your hard work and we will truly have a fun year. And keep cool this summer and remember to put on sun block!

Hello everyone! My name is Ryan Pham and I will be serving you as the club President for the 2012-2013 term. For those who don’t know me, I am entering my third year of col-lege where I am majoring in Communi-cation Studies. With the experience of being the 2010-2011 Spirit/Social Chair and the 2011-2012 Vice Presi-dent of Service, I hope to take this club to the highest level it has ever been. Truthfully, I think it only takes one word, UNITY! Although it’s only a five letter word, the mean-ing to it is extraordinary and larger than life. Aside from that, I want to thank each and every member for their dedication to Orange Coast Col-lege Circle K International. Without the members, OCC CKI wouldn’t be the biggest club on campus and the larg-est community college club in the entire world! Thank you, thank you, and thank you! Like John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” Lets continue to make this world a better place and inspire others to do the same. I love Orange Coast College CKI!

Hearing that Lauren Kim was appointed as the District MD&E Chair, I was ec-static. This is such an honor to know that Orange Coast College, a community college located in Costa Mesa, is repre-sented in the Cal-Nev-Ha District. To show all the universities that OCC packs a punch in the Circle K life and that we have a lot to offer to the district. I know that Lauren is and will do an amaz-ing job in this position. She will not let you down, she will always try to put a smile on your face, and she will be there for you if you ever needed her help.

Have an awesome year Lauren!!

Waking up in the morning and getting ready, putting on my fruity-colored OCC Circle K shirt, I had no idea what to expect from the event, Spring Training Conference South. I only knew one thing and it was that I was going to make the most out of this event for myself. When I got to registration, I was greeted by the friendly familiar faces of my fellow Circle K’ers. I got to hang out with some members who were newer friends of mine, while enjoying some free bagels and refreshments. A little lat-er, the event officially began, starting off with some introductions and some good ol’ cheering! After that, we were off to attend whatever workshops our hearts desired. The five workshops I attended were Networking in CKI, Time Management, Stay-ing Motivated, Healthy Habits and Professional Etiquette. There were all incredibly fun and I really liked all of the icebreaker activities we did in each workshop. Some of my favorites were creating an original handshake with another club member and the human pretzel game where we stood in a circle and held hands with a person that is not standing right next to you and then we tried to untwist ourselves without letting go of each other’s hands. Overall, I think all of the available workshops were awesome in their own ways; I feel that, like me, anyone could’ve gained valuable information from these work-shops, information that helps you build your leadership skills and get the most out of not only your experience in Circle K, but your life, in general. Training Conferences rule! I recom-mend everyone to go to all of them, Spring and Fall!

For me, the day started quite early before 6 in the morning, packing lots of food and materials needed for the day into mine and OCC’s lovely VPA, Tiffany yim’s car, and heading to OCC to help set-up. After setting up, a wave of the southern Circle K clubs started arriving, steadily flooding a part of OCC’s campus with yellow “minions”, spirited in the Dispicable Me theme and excited for the workshop-filled day ahead. Although I was lacking sleep, stand-ing outside for the opening session and seeing many determined new faces caused me to wake up and mentally prepare myself for the Circle K education I was going to receive throughout the day. I learned a lot of critical information that was necessary for me to know as a secretary through the secretary workshops hosted by the amazing district secretary, David Limjoco. I also attended an E-board workshop with my fellow e-board which helped us reflect on our club’s goals, strengths, and weaknesses. Asides from attending workshops related to my board position, I also attended other interest-ing workshops held by talented workshop hosts such as public speaking and video making, which were very fun and taught me valuable information. Magic Kingdom LTG Stephanie L. Nguyen did an amazing job leading the DCM incorporated into the schedule which was a wonderful opportunity to hear about news from the other schools in our division and to play exciting icebreakers. By the time closing ses-sion started, I was drained from the Circle K filled day-- educational but fun workshops and loud, echo-ing cheers-- and ready for starbucks happy hour. Overall, STC taught me a giant list of things that is beneficial in being a helpful member in circle k and was a great experience.

After a weekend of caucusing, cheering at the top of our lungs for our school, our division, and our district, none of the events we have can compare to the excitement shown at the 2012 District Convention. The trip to Woodland Hills was already started on a food after a completely filling dinner at Zino’s Pizza that was provided by Orange Coast College. Once we finished our dinner, we departed the homely pizzeria to our true destination, the Marriot hotel, to check into DCON 2012. Stepping off of the Orange Coast chartering bus, we can already see the craziness that every school has to offer just from their spirit wear alone.

From blow up dinosaurs, to domos, to togas, and even a whole division drinking Cactus Cooler, every school in our district came prepared with spirit items in hand to signify who their school is. Brett Butler, the 2011-2012 District Gover-nor, officially began District Convention with the opening session along with his District Board. After the opening words were said, awards were given out to the distinguished board members of the Cal-Nev-Ha district schools. From all of the joyful cheers, we had moved on towards the introduction of our caucus to hear what the candidates of District Board 2012-2013 have to say for the new year. Ending such a tiresome Friday night, Saturday brought in a professional feel to DCON.

Here at OCC, our entire group had a matching outfit of all black and a distinctive aqua blue bowtie to complete our attire with a pop. This day was filled with leadership workshops hosted by fellow Circle K’ers in our district. The workshops were then followed by a fine dining dinner provided by the hotel along with the talent acts as well as a dance to end the night away. Come Sunday came a gloomy weather to show the sad feelings as DCON 2012 was nearing its end. The strong, rainy weather dampened the atmosphere for us all as the closing session brought tears to many and the re-tirement ceremony began. Once the ceremony ended, all schools parted ways, back to their respective cities with a great farewell to each other’s old friends and friends newly made over the weekend.

Aside from a few students and the occasional squirrel, the OCC quad is a quiet and relaxing space but not on April 26, 2012. With a deluge of students swarming through the rows of booths on their way to class, the first annual Multicul-tural Day proved to be an exciting day for our members and all the potential members visiting our booth. Our booth, represent-ing the Korean peninsula, was visited by both people seek-ing information about Korea and about Circle K International. The members participated in teaching our fellow students what we’re about and our club’s unique diversity. Although we tabled for Korea, this opportunity proved to be a great recruitment op-portunity promoting expansion in members and educating both members and visitors more in depth about what Circle K is all about.

Celebrating the Lifeguards’ Advisor’s Birthday

Tiffany YimVice President ofAdministration

Ryan Pham PresidentBeing part of OCC CKI for 2 years now, I realized we don’t appreciate and recognize our lovely advisor, Jeff Dimsdale, as much as we possibly can. In addition to that, we realized Jeff has never told us his actual birthday. The reason is because he believes the club is about the members and not about him. Well, Patrick Junpradub and I think otherwise. We believe OCC CKI is about all of us, we are a loving family! So, Patrick and I united together to come up with an incredible idea, that is to dedicate the first Tuesday of May to Jeff Dimsdale! We planned out the general meeting, inviting the past OCC CKI alumni and Kiwanians, and having an after party at Souplantation! To be honest, the turnout was amazing! Jeff looked really happy and everyone had a great time

together!

Jeff, if you read this article, I hope you understand how much OCC CKI loves and appreciates you. Although we don’t say it every time we see you, we need you in our lives. Thank you for guiding us through college and giving us advice on how to succeed in life. Thank you for everything you have done! You’ve left a big legacy behind and that is inspiring us to leave a legacy behind

As the ever so blinding sun shone through my bedroom windows, I realized that, as usual, I had nothing to do this Easter morning. I asked myself, “What should I do on this nice and beautiful day?” Why not go to the Easter Social, of course! Honestly, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. What can a bunch of random college kids do at a giant park, Mason Park to be specific, in the middle of Irvine? Well, turns out that there was plenty to do! As soon as we arrived at the park, we found ourselves split into groups as a scavenger hunt was quickly underway. There were various items to be found and tasks waiting to be documented on camera in a short amount of time: pre-tending to jump in the lake, looking for mysterious amphitheater, or serenading a stranger to name a few. After an exciting, but tiresome trek across this huge park, we re-turned back to home base for some water and relaxation. But wait! We were not done just yet. It was time for some more egg-citing activities! Our groups faced off in an egg tossing contest and an egg relay race that revealed just about everybody has a ferocious competitive side. Through all the competition and fighting words, we still shared many laughs and egg stained shirts and shoes in the end. With all the adrena-line dying down and the sun slowly setting, we all lazed around in the lush, green grass and talked about the meaning of life and our place in the universe. Okay, we didn’t really do that, but we did talk a lot! I give this event an A++!

On May June 11th, we helped out at the OC BBQ and Music Festival located at the OC Fairground which is right across from Orange Coast College. There were music concerts, cook-offs and a BBQ tasting competition which was the largest competition there with over 70 award winning teams in Southern California. They also had beer tasting, a rib eating contest, a Premium Car Show and an amazing Kid’s Zone. Many people were enjoying the BBQ and Music in the hot summer weather. We helped out in the Amazing Kid’s Zone hosted by The Kristie’s Foundation, which is a charity for ill children. Inside the Kids Zone, there was a Velcro wall, a cupcake decorating booth, a face painting booth, a petting zoo, an extreme game track, even a Pirates live stage show and more.

We were also surprised by the small shows that were booked. I got to participate in a balloon making show, along with Kevin Amatayakul, where he helped the balloon artist into a giant balloon. It was truly a sight to see. Then we were bombarded by a pirate show out of nowhere but they were such good actors and into their character. It was a blast getting to talk to them since we are OCC Pirates.

We were separated into different booths and helped kids have fun at Kids Zone. All of the kids that came were so adorable. We all had so much fun playing with kids. Also, there were some key clubbers that attended from Bolsa Grande High School, so I was able to get the chance to meet and talk to them. We all enjoyed playing with the kids and getting free bbq pulled pork sandwiches and snacks provided by the event coordinators. It was a really nice event

The Science Discovery Center Annual Rocket Launch was one of the most memorable service projects that I had ever taken a part of. This service project was held on Saturday, May 19th at the Boeing Company site in Huntington Beach. It was the first project that I have chaired and it gave me a sense of leadership! In addition, I also bonded with some of my fel-low board members and even some new members that I have never met before. I even had the opportunity to meet and as-sociate with some CSULB members.

At the Rocket Launch, I was given a variety of jobs, ranging from passing out materials to assisting the “little geniuses” with their rockets. Some of the members were encouraged to be innovative by recycling used rocket launch materials for newcomers. Some were given their turn at the launching site where we witnessed a variety of different types of rockets. We filled the rockets with helium and launched them when the pressure was too high. The rockets would then fly into the air and either successful slow down as they reach the ground or head straight down like a missile launch and explode! It was definitely a sight to see!

Although we were all busy with our tasks, we were also given time to relax and take a break from our hectic schedules. There were a lines of food trucks ready to be of service. There were plenty of FREE food and snacks for the volunteers! We even cheered together as a club for the Volunteer Coordinator, Rosie Lee! Overall, my experience at the Rocket Launch was definitely a great one! I will definitely return again next year!

So, a couple weeks ago I attended the Rocket Launch at the Boeing Head-quarters out in Huntington Beach. The event started at about 9 A.M. and being that we were typical college students we arrived just a bit late. Luckily for us, it was actually still early considering there was a meeting and some set-up still being done. Finally, 11 A.M. rolls around and things are getting into full swing. The families start showing up and begin assembling their rockets at the crafts zone. For a good majority of the time, I was stationed at the launch pads with a large group of other volunteers. Our jobs were to prep and help the kids launch the rockets, as well as record the flight times and direct people. All in all, it was a pretty fun service project. Seeing the faces on all of the little kids light up as their rockets shot up into the air reminded me of when I was younger and doing the exact same thing, and getting soaked in the process just added to the fun.

Lifeguards From All Around Coming Together

Thi Hoang

Spirit Chair

Vince Lombardi once said, “Leaders are not born, they are made.” And that’s exactly what happened on May 5th, 2012, a day that marks the emergence of the 2012-2013 leaders of Costa Mesa K-Family. On this

beautiful day, the soon-to-be-leaders of Costa Mesa K-Family gathered inside the building of Orange Coast College for an intense, one-day, leadership boot-camp that is known as United K Training. The training

consisted of students from Costa Mesa Key Club, Estancia Key Club, Orange Coast College Circle K, and the special appearance of a few Kiwanis who came to host workshops and train the future leaders. The morning started out with a delicious breakfast provided by Così. After that, students were bombarded

with interactive and informational workshops on the definition and importance of leadership. Knowledge was gained and ideas bounced all over the room as these students participate in activities and discussions

on how to improve not only their club, but better themselves as leaders. Some of these workshops in-cluded Smart Goals, K-Fam in Two Dimension, Project Planning, Meeting Management, etc. But of course, leaders cannot work on an empty stomach and even superheroes need a break. So after what seems like a bajillion workshops and with the courtesy of Corner Bakery, these leaders ate their lunch as they indulge themselves in more discussions and workshops. Each student learned something that they could all take

home to their home club. There was no doubt that at the end of the training, the same students, who walked into the training as followers, emerged as strong, inspiring student-leaders of tomorrow.

On June 9th, 2012, the Cypress community hosted their annual outdoor summer concert at the Cypress Civic Center, in order to show off the community’s talented orchestra. Not only that, the event also knit the community closer together because it gave the people in the community an opportunity to interact with each other through music.

At the event, the volunteers were told to man the food stations. Most of the volunteers, including myself, lend a hand in selling and serv-ing the community food, cold drinks, and snacks. It made me feel as though we were working at a fast food service restaurant. In addition, the volunteers also helped out with cleaning up the food tables after the event was over.

Even though this event wasn’t big, it was quite an enjoyable experience. I got to see a small community coming out and supporting each other. I also met new people and further bonded with my fellow Circle-K’ers. I was also able to strike mean-ingful conversations with the elders at the event. They helped me open my eyes so that I can appreci-ate the little things we have in life. I hope that we would be able to come out again to help out the Cypress Kiwanis with the summer annual event.

When in doubt, KFam it out!

In addition to my mini motto for my term this year, I was extremely excited to attend the Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club’s meeting on Thursday May 31, 2012, and I was also glad to bring club members Dennis Le (a first-timer at a Kiwanis meeting) and Gavin Galang (a Kiwanis-club-meeting veteran) with me. Although Costa Mesa Kiwanis meetings have always been a pleasure for me to attend, this meeting was something exceptional. Along with a fantastic lunch—as usual—we had a few special guests seated at the tables: the first, guest speaker Carolyn Gregg who made a presentation on the lo-cal “Patient Centered Medical Home” Share Our Selves, and OCC Circle K’s own former advisor Dee Pritchard (right before Jeff Dimsdale), so it was very much an honor to share our club’s recent accom-plishments with her and the rest of the Kiwanians, especially with the strides our 11 members have made within the California-Nevada-Hawaii Circle K District Board and its committees. To show his enthusiasm for Kiwanis meetings despite being away in the Phillippines, Gavin Galang says, “Skype me [at the meeting], and then I’ll have a plate of my own food in front of the cam-era :D!” What some of our Circle K members don’t know is that we are one of the top colleges to have the closest relationship between any Circle K International club and its sponsoring Kiwanis Club. As your 2012-2013 Kiwanis Family chair, I would love to bring our Kiwanis Family relations to the next level. One of my goals is to have our club represented at every Costa Mesa Kiwanis general club and board meeting throughout this summer, but I can’t do it without your help, OCC Circle K! Here’s how you can: let me know if you’re interested in attending the weekly Thursday Kiwanis meetings from 12pm to 1:30pm at the Costa Mesa Country Club (1701 Golf Course Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626) or Kiwanis board meetings that take place every 2nd Monday of the month at Newport Rib Company (2196 Harbor Boulevard Costa Mesa, CA 92627).

Beautiful for the view of the beach after climbing down so many steps. Don’t be fooled by the name. It’s ALMOST 1000 steps.

One of the most staple beaches to go to just to relax at.Also, put on that sunblock because U.S. Open is held at this beach.

One of the busiest beaches in Orange County with so much going on. A beautiful beach to just pass by with many hotspots to try out.

Seaside bakery ham & cheese croissant, an OCC Circle K favorite. Summer time is a fun time for grunion running and just relaxing anytime of the day.

An interesting beach where there is another side beach to venture on. Clean sand, rocky pier, picnic area, just an ideal beach to go to.

Stepping foot onto Orange Coast College two years ago was one of the biggest obstacles. Being a senior in high school who got accepted into the school that was once my dream, UCLA, and having to give that up due to family and financial problems was one of the most challenging things I had to overcome. Never did I look down on community colleges – Orange Coast College in particular; however, after working so hard in high school to find out I had to attend a community college in the end was a bit heart breaking. My first semester here at Orange Coast College reached rock bottom. Working full time while being a full time student led my life to become a routine. My perspec-tive in attending community college was simply to get in and to get out as quick as possible. Little did I know that a simple club could completely change my perspective. Joining Circle K opened a new experience for me here at Orange Coast College where it gave me a reason and purpose to come to school every day along with something to look forward to. Circle K has helped me attain a more open mindset and to attest that “life is not what life makes out of you, but what YOU make out of life” as your college experience is simply what you make out of it rather than which college you attend. Orange Coast College and Circle K has given me the best college experience and countless memories for the past two years and I am happy to say that I will be taking everything I have learned here with me as I transfer out to UC Berkeley. Work hard, never lose focus, and keep sight on your goals and ambitions; however, never forget to have fun and live life because college only happens once. To the new board, returning members, and new members of our club, I have so much faith that you guys will bring Orange Coast College’s Circle K to greater heights next year and I wish you the best of luck. This club will always remain in my heart and will forever hold the title of being my first home club;

I love you guys and will miss you all! <3 Your immediate past Membership Development and Education Chair is now signing out.

My experience at OCC has been nothing short of interesting. I’ve held constant my serious work ethic through-out, and I feel that it’s ultimately paid off. I can’t say it’s been easy juggling positions in student government and various clubs; I can only say that involvement is much more meaningful when you throw yourself in, as opposed to just going through the motions. CKI has been a fun experience; it was my first time feeling too welcome: the level of spirit was overwhelming, the collegiate interest in the well-being of others as well as in constant self-improvement was inspiring to say the least. It’s a vortex of friendship and happiness, and no matter how hard you resist, you eventually get sucked in. If there’s anything I’ve learned in college, it’s that the people you surround yourself with will ultimately impact your overall experience. Meeting new people, helping others and making friends has been the best part of OCC.

Life at Orange Coast College is not really something I had expected going in. I always thought that I would just at-tend class, learn and leave; that was not the case. With spiteful thoughts entering college, I now leave with remarkable praise for said school. Even though I mindlessly took whichever classes I could take, I managed to create friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime. As time went on, things became a little easier and when I joined Circle K, everything became that much more of an adventure. I’ve always loved volunteering and with a group like this on campus I had to join. I was scared the first time my Sophomore year but decided to rejoin later on. The events I attended, the people I met, the places I travelled to in my time in CKI I will never forget. Not only has it given me a bigger reason to love college, it even helped me transfer to UCI which was one of my top three choices. All in all, I loved going to Orange Coast College de-spite my initial thoughts

For the record, Huy Bui forced me to write this message for the news-letter. Four for you, Huy Bui! You go, Huy Bui! Well, after three years of OCC, I’m finally transferring. It’s a weird feeling, for sure. OCC’s been my home for the past three years. My first year of Circle K was way dif-ferent from what I was expecting, that’s for sure. Our club was tiny! Like thirty people or something, but we were all friends. I was so happy to be in Circle K and to actually know people on campus. I’d always heard going to community college was lonely, but it wasn’t for me. I fell out of touch with school and Circle K for a while during the spring and summer of that first year, but I was welcomed back into the club during my second. I didn’t take

any leadership positions because I tried to focus on school and transferring, but sometimes general education really can put you in a horrible mood. It’s hard to be passionate about learning when you are forced to take many different classes about things completely unrelated to anything you want to study. And if you do bad in any of these classes, you are looked down upon sometimes.. which I don’t really agree with. We can’t all be perfect at everything, can we? Sometimes it was hard to focus on anything.

If I hadn’t have been a Circle K member, I might have let myself go and wandered away from educa-tion. It’s easy to forget what you’re here for, it’s easy to give up and say “I don’t care anymore.” After two years of being a general member, I finally decided to get more involved in Circle K. I applied to be on the District Convention Committee and it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in college. Nothing made me happier than seeing everyone enjoying themselves at District Convention 2012 Service Legacy. If I was shocked people on the committee liked the theme I proposed, imagine my surprise when the entire district was excited for it. I couldn’t always make it to service projects and socials that were so far from my house, but being a part of a District Committee still let me feel like I was a part of Circle K and that I was contributing to the OCC reputation.

After three years, I finally have to say goodbye. I’ll be gone now, but I won’t be too far away. I still plan to stop by now and then. It’s been amazing to see OCC grow from such a tiny seedling to this full fledged garden of service and leadership. I may not have always been around, but I always knew what was going on. Circle K is a lot of fun, but at the same time you need to concentrate on school and focus on reaching your goals. It’s okay to take a step back now and then, you’ll always be welcomed back. If I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t go to a community college closer to my house. Circle K is the reason I went to OCC and it’s the reason OCC was fun. Thanks for everything, OCC Circle K!

PS. Jeff may seem scary, but he’s secretly a big teddy bear! He only wants what is best for the club and the members and no one is as proud of OCC as he is. Don’t be afraid to get to know him! Thank you for everything, Jeff.

I started my first year at OCC straight out of the U.S. Navy. I served my country and during that time I dedicated some of my time to helping out the community as well as other countries. In southeast Asia I painted an orphanage for a Muslim community and played soccer with the children. During that time I had my fellow shipmates support me, they became my brothers. So when I came to OCC for the first time, I felt alone. That is when I met Kevin C Nguyen, the appointed Spirit Chair for CKI. He was so enthusiastic about this club that I took interest in it. He also introduced me to Shelby Paisley, who introduced me to the entire board. Later the board introduced me to the whole club. So I finally felt like

I had people to turn to again, I found my brothers, my family. With this newfound family, I had people giving me something to aspire to. I worked harder to fulfill my requirements to transfer out to a university. I challenged myself to get a 4.0 G.P.A. for a semester and was able to do it due to such wonderful, inspirational people that I met in CKI. It was also the knowledge of the members that made my transfer to SFSU go so smoothly. I also have to recognize that if it wasn’t for the faculty and my veteran’s counselor, Midge Hill, I wouldn’t be transferring at all. The Navy taught me to look for resources while members of CKI taught me how to use them. I also got the satisfaction to help out communities and organizations with different causes, giving me what I had lost in the military. During that time, I observed rising leaders; Jennifer Que, Jonathan Cao-Nguyen, Ryan Pham and Stephanie Nguyen. It was the family, the humanitarian aspects and these rising stars that made me believe was CKI stands for. In the Navy, we had three tenants to live by: Honor, Courage and Commitment, when I served for OCC CKI it was Fel-lowship, Leadership and Service. Through thick and thin, they made my transition easier to civilian life and with that I owe them a great deal of gratitude. Thank you OCC CKI!! I will miss you!!

My experience the past 2 ½ years in Orange Coast College Circle K has taught me some very valuable lessons in the three te-nets Circle K offers which are service, leadership, and fellowship. It is unfortunate that after this year I’ll be leaving Orange Coast College and transferring to UC Riverside in order to pursue a career in film/multimedia alongside computer science. I can honestly say that without the guidance of Circle K I wouldn’t be as active as I was in school. I would have been your typical college student that shows up to class, does homework, and goes home. It is true that Circle K provides many leadership opportunities. Since Circle K had so many leadership op-portunities I took my pick on the computer aspects/film areas. Creating event recap videos, promotional videos, and making slideshows were some of the opportunities given to me by Circle K.

If you asked me 3 years ago to create a slideshow like the one I created at the OCC EOTY banquet I wouldn’t be able to, why? Be-cause I acquired these skills from the various opportunities that Circle K provides. Having been on both E-board and A-Board I know that this year the board will strive to take home more awards, more spirit, and most important of them all having club unity. Although my stay at OCC is coming to an end, I know that regardless of what happens I will always stay in touch with the friends I’ve made at OCC and Circle K. For many of us, it’ll be tough to see the friends we’ve known for two years or more come and leave. That’s the reality for us community college students. We only get two years to bond and then we separate into our different routes taking different career paths.

Regardless, I’ve found that I will still keep in touch with every-one I’ve met at OCC and Circle K because they have all made a huge impact in my life. I know it’s a habit to see people join and leave Circle K, but staying till the very end makes the end result worth it. With that being said, I will miss every single person in OCC Circle K and if I ever come back down to Orange County I will be sure to come and visit you all! <3 Good byes are always tough, but it’s not a good bye as long as we see each other some time in the future!

Greetings to all from CKI SFSU! We are a small CKI family here in SF, but we’re all the more close and overly loving!

Our club is very supportive and energetic in all the service events we do and passionately encourage members to take charge of the 3-5 service events we have going on weekly and for the members to their bring their own leadership ideas into the club as well.

Most, if not all, service events we always provide a positive connection to the San Francisco community and the rest of the Bay Area. Since our location in San Francisco is conveniently close to fast (as it can go) public transit, we’re able to not only to volunteer just in San Francisco, we can go far north as Sacramento and way down south to UC Santa Cruz and help out other CKI clubs and different communities besides SF’s.

Our social events happen before or after service events and they happen at random times too. Different types of social events we have are: food outings like to Japantown or downtown San Francisco, movie watching at the Daly City theaters, trips to a couple of the famous parks like Golden Gate Park and Dolores Park, and do it yourself crafts like pop-up cards and origami. We always have social events happening as much as possible and at almost every social event, we have people bring an abundance of food, smiles, and laughter!

Our family is warm and loving because of all the small dysfunctional (sometimes actually functional)

qualities each member has that creates a warm, peaceful atmosphere when we’re together.

We’re Not The Only Ones Out there!!!HELLO OCC! UCLA would like to say “Helloo!” from Metro Division! While y’alls are busy “doin’ your thang” at OCC, UCLA has also been up to a few things! We recently attended our Metro Divisional Banquet, and we’ve had a few events that involved our TLC for Trees event, where we helped save trees with another organization at our school. We have also been doing service and working with other branches within our Kiwanis Family. Aside from service, we have a few fundraisers going on such as our Vietnam-ese Banh Mi and Boba Sale, our Five Guys Fundraiser, and our new CKI apparel. In addition to everything else, we currently have an Assassins Game going on within our club! (It’s funny watching people get “killed”). The biggest excitement is our upcoming Human vs. Zombies event! While we have our events, we know that y’alls must be having loads of fun at OCC! We hope to see and hear from you soon! (:

We love seeing your smiling faces every Tuesday and it really does mean a lot to us when we see you guys there!
