Doyle Early then introduced our speaker Brian Gavigan, who is a health care attorney at Doyle’s law firm. Brian’s topic was ‘The patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’, also known as PPACA and simply Obamacare. Brian, whose wife is a physician, worked around hospitals and healthcare from the time he was in the Air Force. Healthcare has remained one of his specialties to this day over a thirty year law career. He began by sharing with us handouts of four graphs that gave emphasis to healthcare related trends over the last roughly twelve years leading to his conclusion that these trends are not sustainable. He pointed to causes that included the fee for service model, the over-use by patients, lack of access to preventive care and wellness, and defensive medicine practices. He added to those such factors as an aging population, longer living citizens, expanding medical capabilities, and a physician shortage. He used those points to un-derscore the goal of giving everyone access to healthcare. Brian then talked about the individual, small employer , and large employer mandates of the plan. He then opened up the floor to questions that included the mandatory requirements, the physician’s perspective, the Hobby Lobby lawsuit, the part time employee, the health of the insur-ance companies, and more. The questions were still coming, but our time had elapsed. It was evident the members had many questions on how Obamacare was going to play out. Doyle thanked Brian and presented the speaker’s gift and at the same time called up Cierra. He presented her a Rotary Gold Coin as an honorary and future Rotarian. Doyle closed with a story before he led us in the 4 Way Test to conclude the meeting.

Rotary’s Impact is Everywhere I was having a family dinner a week ago and engaged my nephew’s new girlfriend in con-versation. In the course of conversation. I made reference to a speaker at my Rotary Club meeting. She lit up, ‘oh, you are a Ro-tarian?’ Yes I responded. She went on to tell me that she studied for a year in Japan on a Rotary Scholarship through a Club from Syracuse, New York. It was a wonderful ex-perience for her. Today she teaches, includ-ing Japanese. The impact of Rotary is every-where . . . from half way around the world to right around the corner. Mark Pierce

ROTARY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Here’s proof that two of our Rotarians, George White and Joel Gentry, really did attend sessions when they were in Pinehurst last November for the Ro-tary Leadership Institute. In other words . . . No golf!

The next Rotary Leadership Institute is schedule for February 28th at David-son County Community College. If you have an interest in attending or want more information on the RLI, see Dave McCoy. Four Club members are already signed up to attend. They would love to have you with them!

OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE ROTARY

I am Cierra Seawright, a Girl Scout in troop 190 at Wesley Me-

morial UMC and I am working on my Gold Award Project. I

have created a clothes closet at Fairview Elementary School for

children in the community whose families cannot clothe their

children adequately throughout the school year. The closet is

accessible to children throughout the day. Often parents call the

school for assistance if they have recently endured a certain

hardship and are unable to send their child to school in proper

clothing. This clothes closet reaches out to the 400 children at

Fairview to be there in their time of need. I’m asking the Rotary

Club members to support my project to get key items needed for

the growth and prosperity of my project. Your donation would

provide ample amounts of bins to store the clothes. Also, I

would purchase new children’s socks and underwear, because

the closet only provides new undergarments for the children due

to sanitation purposes. These items also are the most in demand

items needed to the closet. The generous donation would be

greatly appreciated and would truly help my Gold Award Pro-

ject too. Checks can be made payable to Troop 190 or gift cards

to stores where I can purchase socks and underwear would also

be welcome.

Thank you for your help!

about an

Interact

project

This email is to advise of an exciting service opportunity in conjunction with our High Point Christian Academy Inter-act Club.

The Interact Club is sponsoring a teacher lunch day at Northwood Elementary School on Friday, March 7, 2014 from 10:30 am-1:00 pm. The Interact Club has ap-proached our club for assistance with this project. The assistance needed is 2 or 3 Rotarians the date of the event to assist in serving and setup, cleanup etc. In addi-tion, they will need donations of drinks, paper products

(plates, napkins, silverware and cups) and des-serts. There are about 90 to 100 staff members that will be served that day.

If you are able to assist, please let me know. Thank you! Tammy Childress [email protected]
