AN EASTER CHURCH

This past week, Josh, our youngest, and I played baseball in the backyard. It was an aw-

ful day for baseball. Even though the sun was out, it was cold and windy. However, Josh

would not be deterred. He really wanted to play. I have noticed in both our boys that

they have spring fever. They are tired of being indoors, tired of the cold and the gray,

misty weather. So, Josh put on his winter coat, grabbed his ball, bat, and glove, and out-

side we went to play ball

Are you tired of the gray? Are you tired of the continual striving to be better than what-

ever or whoever? Are you tired of the bickering, fragmentation, division and abuse of

power? Are you tired of the grudges, the violence, lack of true care for another whether

they are known to us or not? Are you tired of the politicking, continuing to try and get

ahead, be secure, to keep other out and thus creating competition? Are you tired of the

business, being worn out, wondering what it is all for? Are you tired of the gray? We are

called to be like Josh: to live spring in the gray of winter.

What we often don’t realize is how much we need church. Each and every day, we soak

in and inherit an understanding of reality that is more based on “the gray,” than based on

God and the work done in Christ. The people called “church,” gather out of this reality

weekly so that they can experience a truer reality called the kingdom of God. In worship

and as a people together, we soak in God and his ways so that we can live spring in the

grey. God provides an alternative to everything above that is not right with our world.

That alternative is a true life in Christ together as God’s people.

Everything within us tells us we must create this alternative. We must build it by working

harder and smarter as if God’s work in Christ was not enough and that God truly needs

us. After all, we are smart, capable and civilized people. And then using the wisdom we

have gleaned, we must remove any reality that does not belong. The reality of the gray

has truly gotten its hold deep within our very being. This will never bring us to living the

newness of God’s spring.

God goes against everything that seems logical. Like Christ, we must empty ourselves

completely. The gift of Easter and new life in God is not just a tweaking to make our pre-

sent reality just a little better, but something completely different and new. We will nev-

er enter until we abandon all preconceived notions and let God work and be revealed.

Thus, as we often forget how much we need church, we just as easily forget that church

truly does not exist without complete dependence on God. We are called to live the new

life. The church, its committees, its fellowship, and its people are all called to lay their

lives down with Christ, who was crucified. Then, God enables the miracle of Easter. And

then, we become a strange people who live the newness of spring like playing baseball in

the winter. I invite you not to try so hard, not to have to figure everything out. Let us lay

our lives before God and truly be an Easter church, a sign to all of the living Christ.

Thanks to everyone who helped with our Annual Easter Egg Hunt. We had a great turnout! Fortunately, the weather cooperated and we were able to have the egg hunt outdoors. (Big sign of relief!)

On Sunday, May 6th, we will be welcoming new members into Centenary United Methodist Church. If you have been considering

joining our church, please contact Pastor Danny. He can also answer any questions you might have regarding membership.

while the rest of the team travels to meet us at the church that evening. The cost to go on the mission trip is

$100, plus the amusement park cost for those who will be going there on Saturday. If you are interested in possi-

bly making this trip, please sign up in the Narthex.

Sharon Hollon had the idea of conducting sewing classes for interested women of Centenary. That has grown into a group of dedicated seamstresses who not only sew for themselves, but also for others. This past fall and winter they have blessed area nursing homes with adult bibs, catheter bag covers, lap quilts and fidget quilts. They also made 82 colorful and varied pillow cases for Riley Children’s Hospital of Evansville. They finished up the sewing “season” by participating in the Little Dresses for Africa campaign.

PILLOW CASES FOR RILEY

LAP QUILTS ~ FIDGET QUILTS BRIGHT & CHEERFUL FOR HURTING KIDS

We will also be hosting two mission teams this summer. St. Paul UCC of Alexandria, KY, will be here from June 23rd

to June 30th. They will be followed by the mission team from Second Avenue UMC, Altoona, PA, who will arrive on

July 7th and depart on July 14th.

Blue Grass UMC will be offering a Safe Sitter course on Saturday, April 28th. This is for students ages 11-14 as they begin summer babysit-ting. They will learn CPR and other vital skills necessary for those responsible for childcare. Cost is $30 for the full day class and class size is limited to 16 students. If interested, you may contact the Blue Grass office at 812.459.9936.

What a blessing they have been to others while honing their own skills! We can’t wait to see what they will be doing when they begin sewing again this Fall!

Easter Sunday, April 1, the choir worshipped with the people in the sanctuary with a very beautiful cantata, “When I Survey The Wondrous Cross.” Our soloists were Julie Huebner and Janet Graves. Amber Ferguson and Roger Huebner, Jr. sang a duet about seeing Jesus’ death on the cross and His everlasting life. It was a very special musical offering. Thanks to Jim Sharp, (our narrator), Shirley Woods (organist), and Tyler Jackson (drums), and Ben Kempf (sound system). Our pianist, Ronda Flem-ing, had a medical emergency with her husband, but she had played our choir parts so much for us that we knew it! I felt we all received a special Easter blessing from this choir, I most of all, because I directed in the middle of all the voices! Thank you, everyone! Miriam Seibert, Choir Director

Just a line to say I’m living

That I’m not among the dead.

Though I’m getting more forgetful

And so messed up in the head.

I got used to my arthritis

To my dentures I’m resigned.

I can manage my bifocals,

But, Oh My, I miss my mind.

For sometimes I can’t remember

When I stand at the foot of the stairs,

If I must go up for something

Or I just came down from there.

And before the fridge so often

My poor mind is filled with doubt.

Have I just put food away, or

Have I come to take some out?

And there’s times when it is darkened

With my night cap on my head.

I don’t know if I’m retiring,

Or just getting out of bed!

Go Ahead and Chuckle ~It’s Good For You
