Library Happy New Year! Welcome 2017!! The second half of the year is upon us and now we turn our attention to the world of nonfiction. For the upper grades, we will begin the year by conducting a country study of Norway in conjunction with reading Roald Dahl’s amazing autobiography, Boy. The intermediate grades will finish reading The Witches and enjoy working on projects related to the book. For the primary grades we will be starting a research project on arctic animals.
Music
The Winter Music Festival was a blast! It concluded our first chapter in the music room this year. All of the ensembles did a great job performing. We had a variety of performers, including: bucket drumming, ribbon dancing, chorus, and solo playing. I am so proud of all the hard work from our students and their focus and dedication. Also, I would like to deeply thank all of the parents who came and supported us. Thanks to your generosity we had a very successful cookie sale during the Festival, as well, which raised some funds for our music program at Haines. A big shout out to all of you wonderful supportive parents. I wish you all a very happy New Year and wonderful holidays filled with joy, laughter, and adventure!
P.E. During the month of January all students will participate in a soccer unit during their P.E. class. Students in grades kindergarten through second grade will spend time learning to dribble (control the soccer ball while moving with their feet), trapping (stopping a moving soccer ball), passing, basic shooting, and basic game play. Third through fifth grade students will work on controlling,
passing, and shooting the ball while moving and more advanced soccer game play. Finally, the sixth through eighth grade students will practice advanced control of the soccer ball (juggling), shooting from different angles and speeds, passing to moving targets, and advanced soccer spacing and game play. Look for upcoming information about the sexual health education unit for all students scheduled to be taught in March. Here’s to a wonderful healthy new year!
Technology In January, third and fourth grade students will continue to develop their proficiency in using the Google Apps for productivity. They will design their own version of a 2017 calendar with events that are planned for the first half of the year. Fifth and sixth graders are going to further expand their media experience with making thematic short videos and animations. For seventh graders, January will mark the launch of their maker series. They will use computer aided design (CAD) software to create three dimensional objects for 3D printing. From December, 2016:
