E And this is exactly what the festival is all about. It’s five years since brothers Nick and Keith Curtis decided to host a folk festival on the family farm, and the event is going from strength to strength, with dedicated folk fans and locals alike sampling home-cooked food and local ales while enjoying the eclectic line-up on stage.

But for Tony, regardless of the size of the venue, or the audience, the pressure to perform is always there: “The most challenging aspect of what I do is definitely the nerves before going on stage.

“Ultimately, when you’re on stage it’s your reputation on the line – one bad gig and it could all be over – so the pressure in the immediate moments before performing is immense. That’s something that never leaves you. But once the first song is out of the way, I can always feel myself relax and go with the flow.”

And the inspiration behind it all? The family’s piano and a determined school teacher…

“I first got into music when I was five or six. While my father played the piano, I would sing the hit songs of the day to my family. They used to give me money and I thought ‘Hey, this would be a great job!’

“Then, when I was at infant school I used to sit at the back of the class with my best mate, who would sing every song in the same note, all the

way through! I was so envious of him and tried to copy him, until one day my music teacher made me move down to the front and sing properly!”

rom the working men’s clubs of Yorkshire to the Royal Albert Hall, Tony Christie’s eclectic career has taken him to a variety of venues across the world.

And yet, after some six decades in music, on a lazy Sunday afternoon in the heart of the beautiful New Forest, this is a new experience for Tony.

“This is only the second folk festival I’ve ever been to – but it’s great, such a laid-back atmosphere,” Tony comments, as we glance across from the farmhouse to the wooden stage, where multi-instrumentalist Chris Leslie is in full flow, playing to an attentive crowd.

One of the finest musicians of his generation, Tony Christie is undoubtedly best-known for his 1971 hit “Is This the Way to Amarillo”, which returned to the charts four decades later as Peter Kay’s infamous Comic Relief hit.

“Amarillo was a god-send for me,” Tony recalls. “I’d already been playing and touring for about 10 years, struggling to get by, but that song gave me my big break – within a year I suddenly had another two or three hit songs and it opened a lot of doors in the industry.”

Yet Tony’s career is about much more than being a one-hit wonder. Tirelessly touring, Tony also has a passion for new projects – his latest venture uniting him with contemporary folk band Ranagri bringing him to the New Forest for the first time.

“I’ve known Don [Donal Rogers, vocals and guitar in Ranagri] for about 30 years, as he used to be in a band with my son,” Tony explains. “We decided to do something different and create an album celebrating traditional songs from a shared Irish heritage, ‘The Great Irish Songbook’.

“This is obviously a very different style of music and performing to what I’m used to – it’s more a kind of laid-back storytelling - but I sing it as I feel it.”

Time for trainingThe days are getting shorter and colder, so what better way to delay the onset of winter blues than to schedule some autumn training?

Time is at a premium. Your situation may not be conducive to committing to gym membership but, by exercising at home, you can avoid unnecessary journeys and fit your workouts around your other responsibilities. Even so, you’ll want to make the best use of the time available, so how should you train for maximum effect?

For quick results, you need to focus on equipment that exercises more than one muscle group. Machines that fit into this category include the rower and the cross-trainer.

Rowing is a full-body activity which engages every major muscle group. It also provides a great cardio workout and is ‘low-impact’ - unlike running.

Cross-trainers work more than one part of the body and represent a good option if you want to improve

tone your arms and legs at the same time. They are also easy to use.

Another option, if you’ve insufficient space for exercise machines, is to use smaller items of equipment that enable you to perform a variety of exercises, such as suspension training kits, kettlebells, medicine balls and power bags.

Making it workHaving started your new routine, keep going and don’t give up! Most of us have embarked upon a fitness regime at some time in our lives, but few stick with it. Here are some tips on making your workout work for you…

You should exercise enough, but not too much – three workouts per week would be a minimum. Your body also needs to recover, so allow at least two days’ rest a week.

Achieving a fitness objective is great motivation to keep going. Set realistic goals, with interim targets along the way to help maintain interest.

An intoxicating mix of cars, stars and motor sport royalty come together over four superb days for the Festival of Speed (Thursday 23rd – Sunday 26th June).The largest event of its kind in the world, the festival gathers together the planet’s rarest and most glamorous cars.
