The Student Selection Process
Professor Liz Twigg Deputy Director SCDTP, University of

Two overarching principles:-
1. No institutional quotas 2. Selection is underpinned by student
excellence
A. To apply for SCDTP Masters and/or Doctorate - STUDENT MUST complete TWO application forms • Usual admissions for relevant university • Specific application for the SCDTP (available at www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk)
B. Applications for SCDTP advertised soon – DEADLINE FOR BOTH – 17TH February 2017 • Individual institutions may issue further deadlines in advance
C. SCDTP applications sent to Thematic Cluster Pathway Coordinators (TCPCs) no
later than 24th February 2017:- • Standard university application • Separate SCDTP form
Stage 1
D. TCPCs will then gather information from appropriate organisation (via supervisors) on:- • A statement of support from the Academic Unit showing how the research
aligns with Dept/School/Unit/Faculty/University strategy (200 words) • Statement of support from the proposed supervisor (200 words) • If steered award – need additional annex completed
• Advanced Quantitative Methods (4) • ESRC Datasets (4) • Interdisciplinary (4) • South Coast (1), Widening Participation (1)
A. 6th -10th March 2017, each TCP + independent chair (minuted meeting) • Consider applicants to their TCP and who to forward to Stage 3 • RANK using criteria:-
• Undergraduate degree, Masters degree*, Transcripts • Masters dissertation • Academic references • Quality of research proposal (+3) • Research area how it will build to PhD (1+3) • Other relevant experience • For AQM – nature of quantitative methods • Residency
− NB Can recruit up to 35% international students across AQM and Economics awards
* NB an existing Masters must meet ESRC PG Training Guidelines
Stage 2 – TCPCs rankings
PLUS:-
• Strength of supervisory teams (NB cross-institution collaboration allowed but not used to evaluate application).
• Alignment of research topic with Dept/Unit/Faculty/Univ strategy via statement of support.
• Statement of support from supervisors (including interview performance). • And where two candidates are equal, availability of funding from non-academic
partner will be considered. NB separate exercise initially for +3 and 1+3 – then combined (50% of allocation to 4 year programmes). B. Supported, ranked applications sent to SCDTP Manager by 15th March, 2017. C. Shared online with the selection committee – until 20th March, 2017.
