nless you’re well-schooled in Shake-speare’s work, you may not be awarethat the story of Hamlet has roots inhistory and legend dating back to the

seventh century A.D. The probable direct source for Shakespeare’s

tragedy was an earlier play from the 1580s, now referredto by scholars as the Ur-Hamlet (ur being a German pre-fix meaning proto- or original). Written accounts fromthe late sixteenth century refer to productions of this ear-lier play, but we know very little about it: no copy ofthe text has survived and even its authorship is un-known. Some scholars have suggested it was an earlierversion written by Shakespeare himself. Whoever wrotethe play in all likelihood found its source material inFrançois de Belleforest’s 1570book, Histoires tragiques, whichwas in turn a translation andadaptation of a 15th-century Ital-ian work.

But one of the earliest sur-viving versions of the story ofHamlet comes from a twelfth-century work of Danish historyby Saxo Grammaticus, which in-cludes the saga of Amleth, son ofHorwendil. As related by Saxo,Horwendil was governor of theDanish territory of Jutland duringthe seventh century. Upon re-turning from a Viking expeditionduring which he had slain theking of Norway, Horwendil mar-ried Gerutha, the daughter of theKing of Denmark, who bore hima son, Amleth. Years later, Hor-wendil’s jealous brother, Fengo,murdered Horwendil and con-vinced Gerutha to marry him, ar-guing that he had saved her froma husband who hated her.

Amleth, fearing for his ownlife, pretended to be feeble-minded, but Fengo was suspi-cious and enlisted a beautiful

woman to ensnare Amleth and expose his pretense. In-stead the woman, a childhood companion of Amleth’s,helped him to escape his uncle’s trap. Not to be de-terred, Fengo arranged for an advisor to hide inGerutha’s chambers and eavesdrop on a conversationbetween Amleth and his mother. Amleth discovered thespy and killed him. He berated his mother for her inces-tuous marriage to his father’s murderer, and convincedher to repent.

Fengo, his suspicions sharpened by the murder ofhis accomplice, dispatched Amleth to England with twoescorts who carried a letter enjoining the king to executeAmleth. But Amleth subsituted his own letter calling forthe death of the escorts, and made his way back to Den-mark. He confronted Fengo with his intention to avenge

his father, and then killed theusurper with his own sword.Amleth justified the killing in anoration to the people, whogreeted him as their rightfulruler.

Amleth lived on to under-take a series of heroic exploitsbefore finally being slain in bat-tle. One of his two wives re-peated Gerutha’s transgressionby agreeing to marry Amleth’skiller.

There’s no way to knowhow much of Saxo’s account hasa basis in historical fact and howmuch stems from oft-embel-lished legend. But it’s useful toremember that the troubled pro-tagonist of Shakespeare’s tragedyderives from a medieval saga ofmurderous Vikings and feudalwarlords. Amleth’s world wasvery much of the Dark Ages: ithad long since lost touch withthe civilized values of antiquity,and was many centuries distantfrom the renaissance of high cul-ture that would characterizeShakespeare’s own time.

f all poems, Hamlet is the most unlimit-ed. As a meditation upon humanfragility in confrontation with death, itcompetes only with the world’s scrip-tures. … The Tragical Historie of Ham-let, Prince of Denmarke stands apart

among Shakespeare’s thirty-eight plays, quite aside fromits universal fame. Its length and variety are matched byits experimentalism. After four centuries, Hamlet re-mains our world’s most advanced drama, imitated butscarcely transcended by Ibsen, Chekhov, Pirandello, andBeckett. You cannot get beyond Hamlet, which estab-lishes the limits of theatricality, just as Hamlet himself isa frontier of consciousness yet to be passed. I think itwise to confront both the play and the prince with aweand wonder, because they know more than we do.

Hamlet’s world is pre-eminently in the interrogativemood. It reverberates with questions, anguished, medi-tative, alarmed. There are questions that in this play, toan extent I think unparalleled in any other, mark thephases and even the nuances of the action, helping toestablish its peculiar baffled tone. There are other ques-tions whose interrogations, innocent at first glance, aresubsequently seen to have reached beyond their con-texts and to point towards some pervasive inscrutabilityin Hamlet’s world as a whole. Such is that tense seriesof challenges with which the tragedy begins: …“Who’sthere?” … “Who is there?” … “What art thou…?” Andthen there are the famous questions. In them the inter-rogations seem to point not only beyond the context butbeyond the play, out of Hamlet’s predicaments into ev-eryone’s: “What a piece of work is a man! … And yet tome what is this quintessence of dust?” “To be or not tobe, that is the question.” “Get thee to a nunnery. Whywouldst thou be a breeder of sinners?” … Thus the mys-teriousness of Hamlet’s world is of a piece. … It is builtin. It is evidently an important part of what the playwishes to say to us.

Of the leading Renaissance English playwrights, it is onlyShakespeare who fully participates in the popular vogue

for presenting ghosts onstage. Indeed, “participates” isan inadequate term: Shakespeare’s celebrated ghostscenes — easily the greatest in all of English drama —are signs of a deep interest that continues through virtu-ally his entire career. He saw that he could draw upona range of traditions, including not only the classicalHades and the popular Hell but also the banished realmof Catholic Purgatory. … The richest and most complexexploitation of the theatrical capital Shakespeare foundin ghosts is in Hamlet. … With the doctrine of Purgatoryand the elaborate practices that grew up around it, thechurch had provided a powerful method of negotiatingwith the dead, or, rather, with those who were at oncedead and yet, since they could still speak, appeal, andappall, not completely dead. The Protestant attack onthe “middle state of souls” and the middle place thosesouls inhabited destroyed this method for most peoplein England, but it did not destroy the longings and fearsthat Catholic doctrine had focused and exploited. In-stead, … the space of Purgatory becomes the space ofthe stage where old Hamlet’s Ghost is doomed for a cer-tain term to walk the night.

The essential subject of Hamlet, suggested by and fo-cused in the old story of a son’s revenge, is, then, as Isee it, the intermingling of good and evil in all life. Theworld to which the hero’s human destiny commits him isone in which Hyperion [the sun god, identified withHamlet’s father] and the satyr [half-human, half beast,identified with Claudius] are brothers, sprung from thesame stock, which also lives in him. Seeing the satyr ap-parently triumphant, he is possessed by a sense of theall too fertile viciousness of life in which his own lifeshares. It is a life in which he must yet is reluctant toparticipate. He longs for death, refuses marriage andprocreation, his nature resistant to what nature wills.This, I think, is the fundamental conflict the play exhibitsin Hamlet; and it is a conflict which accords with his ne-glect to perform his destined task. … In the last act,however, there comes a change. We find Hamlet in thechurchyard meditating on death. But death is not nowsomething to be longed for as a release from the ills ofthe flesh, nor something to be shunned from the dreadof what comes after. … For he now perceives in the uni-verse, embracing all its apparent good and evil, asupreme if mysterious design.

MARTIN BENSON (Artistic Direc-tor), co-founder of SCR with hiscolleague David Emmes, has di-rected nearly one third of theplays produced here. He has dis-tinguished himself in the stagingof contemporary work, includingWilliam Nicholson’s The Retreatfrom Moscow, the world premiereof Horton Foote’s Getting FrankieMarried — and Afterwards andthe critically acclaimed Californiapremiere of Nicholson’s Shadow-lands. He has won accolades forhis direction of five major worksby George Bernard Shaw, includ-ing the Los Angeles Drama CriticsCircle (LADCC) Award-winnersMajor Barbara, Misalliance andHeartbreak House. Among hisnumerous world premieres isMargaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit, which he also di-rected at Seattle Repertory The-atre and the Alley Theatre inHouston. He has directed Ameri-can classics including Ah, Wilder-ness!, A Streetcar Named Desire,A Delicate Balance and A Viewfrom the Bridge. Mr. Benson hasreceived the LADCC Distin-guished Achievement in Directingawards an unparalleled seventimes for the three Shaw produc-tions, John Millington Synge’sPlayboy of the Western World,Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, SallyNemeth’s Holy Days and Wit. Healso directed the film version ofHoly Days using the original SCRcast. Along with Emmes, he ac-cepted SCR’s 1988 Tony® Awardfor Outstanding Resident Profes-

PAULA TOMEI (Managing Direc-tor) is responsible for the overalladministration of South CoastRepertory and has been Manag-ing Director since 1994. A mem-ber of the SCR staff since 1979,she has served in a number ofadministrative capacities includ-ing Subscriptions Manager, Busi-ness Manager and General Man-ager. She served on the board ofTheatre Communications Group(TCG), the service organizationfor theatre, from 1998-2006 andwas its President for four years.She has also served as Treasurerof TCG, Vice President of theLeague of Resident Theatres(LORT) and has been a memberof the LORT Negotiating Commit-tee for industry-wide unionagreements. In addition, she rep-resents SCR at national confer-ences of TCG and LORT; is a the-atre panelist for the National En-dowment for the Arts and theCalifornia Arts Council (CAC),and site visitor for the CAC;served on the Advisory Commit-tee for the Arts AdministrationCertificate Program at the Univer-sity of California, Irvine; and hasbeen a guest lecturer in the grad-uate school of business at Stan-ford and the University of Califor-nia, Irvine. She graduated fromthe University of California,Irvine with a degree in Eco-nomics and pursued an addition-al course of study in theatre anddance.
