February is finally here! I don’t know about you but I felt

that January went on forever! I think after the festivities of

December, January feels all gloom and doom. Everyone is

either broke from too much present buying, failing to stick

to overly ambitious New Year’s resolutions or shivering to

the core, even here in the UAE!

February gives us a little boost and it’s now perfectly acceptable to drop

a couple of those hastily made resolutions without feeling too much

shame. It’s also the month of love with Valentine’s Day celebrated on

the 14th. In keeping with this, we took a look at Paris, the city of love, as

well as picking out some of the top romantic spots in the Garden City.

Guys, if you haven’t figured out what to buy your other half yet don’t

worry; you can turn to page 15 for some fail safe ideas.

Now, while we were brandishing all this love around, we thought it was

only fair to give some back to our beautiful planet. Learn how to make

some eco-friendly decorative ideas on page 20 and read about an Al

Ain School that’s full of green-fingered students. Finally, find out how,

with a little TLC, you can grow your very own garden.

Go on, share the love!

Happy reading!

ENVIRONMENTGOING GREEN AT WORK

Protecting the environment has to be part of your everyday life outside your home as well as in it. No matter where you work, take the intiative to keep your colleagues informed about the environment. At the office, set up an environmental bulletin board to post notices about local environmental meetings, environmental news and any green tips. Why not cut out our ‘enviro’ tip each issue and make it your starting point?

Books, Bats, Poles & Libraries

A library in Scotland has come up with a fun and interesting way of encouraging people to use the libraries in their area… by offering free entertainment in the form of pole-dancers and ‘book’ tennis! Local dancers keep guests entertained while writing sessions are offered to budding novelists and books used as bats in games of ‘booky’ table tennis sessions!

Wacky

World

When someone arrives home after a trip, recovers from being ill or even gives birth to a child, it’s tradition to tell them

which translates as ‘Thank God for your safety’.

‘AL HAMDULILLAH AALA SALAMAH’

As February appears on the calendar, the bells of my brain chime- just one thing strangling my mind; “14th February – Valentine's day”. Every heart has a demanding beat, sorting out the answers of my questions…

“My Valentine should treat me as his/her first priority.”

“My Valentine should wipe all my tears and bring a bright smile on my face!”

“He/she should love me even if I’m wrong”

“He/she must be cooperative and supporting”

“Dashing Looks? Who can forget that?”

Demanding right? I knew that! Then my mind says, “Who can be that perfect?” “Of course no one” I add. Then a conversation began. “My dear! There are some people who loved you at the time when you were just an imagination of your mother who was desperately waiting for you to turn a beautiful reality, an imagination of a father, who struggled day and night just for your comfort, you were their first priority. The most precious gem for them. Do you remember the time? When you used to fall down and cry, the mother used to come hurriedly with the tears in her eyes too, “What happened my little baby?” she used to wipe your tears and her warm hug used to give you a magical relaxation. You committed uncountable mistakes. “Oh stop treating me like that I’m not a baby anymore!” but they still didn’t stop loving you. When life puzzled you they were the people who sort the pieces for you and portrait it as beautiful as ever.”

Now I truly agree with the statement, “Love at first sight”

Because I loved my family since the day I opened my eyes

I don’t need any prince charming or beauty queen because they won’t love me as much my family loves me.

My family, my real valentine! God bless them with long, happy, wealthy and a prosperous life.

After the stunning success of the UAE team in the 21st Gulf Cup last month, the Football Association have made a bid to host the upcoming 2019 Asian Cup.

The country previously hosted the competition back in 1996 and will be up against Bahrain, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Iran for the honor of hosting the event in 2019.

Being awarded the contest would be a great opportunity for the Emirates and we, for one, are keeping our fingers crossed!

Hailing from the UK, I quite often take a look at the news from Scotland when I have a spare moment. It’s nice to keep up with things going on back home, it helps me somehow feel like I’m still connected.

Anyway, the other day I was browsing through British newspaper The Telegraph online when I came across an article about Al Ain! Now, it’s not very often the small city of Al Ain features in the UK press, never mind in one of the most popular newspapers in the country, so I was naturally instantly intrigued.

It seems that Al Ain Football Club’s so called ‘tika-taka’ goal against Ajman a few weeks ago caused quite a furor in my home country. For those of us not familiar with the term, the ‘tika-taka’ goal is a move which involves every single player, including the goalkeeper, getting a touch of the ball in an intricate passing sequence that is the build-up to the end strike.

Reading further, I discovered that it wasn’t just The Telegraph who were impressed by our Garden City side as UK tabloid The Sun also ran the story crediting it with the impressive headline ‘Step aside Barcelona – Al Ain are the new kings of tiki-taka football’.

This kind of coverage is exactly what the Pro-League needs to help boost expat fans and I’m proud as punch that Ahmed Yousuf’s strike made the papers all the way back in Blighty!

Al Ain and Al Nasr finished with a 1-1 deadlock in last week’s Etisalat Cup semi-final.

Jires Kembo-Ekoko opened the scoring with a goal for Al Ain with only ten minutes game time remaining. The Garden City team held the lead until extra time when Al Nasr’s Lima, stepped forward to fire a penalty deep in the back of the net.

The New Kings of FootballBy Hayley Skirka

Al Ain Coash Cosmin Olaroiu said he was disappointed by the late equalizer but not by his team’s overall performance.

The result leaves Al Nasr with no chance of progressing, while Al Ain fall one behind Group A leaders Al Wahda, but with a game in hand against Al Shaab.

Undoubtedly, gardening in Al Ain is a challenge. Granted, with ample resources, anything is possible as seen in the extraordinary beauty of the Al Ain Paradise Gardens. However, the average gardening enthusiast might not be on par with such an unlimited supply of resources to maintain an equally stocked garden. Be encouraged, however, by the efforts of Rob

Reid, who chose to go the indigenous way.

As is well documented, introducing foreign plants can cause major disruptions of the local ecosystems and uncontrollable invasions of the indigenous vegetation, as well as constant special care. As Rob puts it, the value of encouraging the use of indigenous plants in gardens and parks goes beyond the aesthetic value that many of us place on maintaining the distinctive local flavor of a place, to the support of the undisrupted complexity of the ecosystems outside of the garden or city limits, and more efficient use of resources like water and soil fertility. Rob explains, “Indigenous plants grow well without fertilizer; they don’t need poisons and are in equilibrium with all diseases and pests.”

He warns that growing plants easily and seeing them do well means growing what is adapted to the local environment. That said, ‘indigenous’ to the Emirates does not necessarily imply 'indigenous' to Al Ain. Here, for example, the gravel is alkaline and rich in calcium so the plants growing wild are able to fare pretty well. The commonest plants will generally signify the toughest, and that is a good place to start when making your choice.

Indigenous plants are not widely available as yet which means whatever you want to grow from the riches of the local desert, you'll probably have to find and dig out yourself. This is where your dedication and resolve will be tested! These plants may survive extreme heat and water deprivation, but they do not like their roots being disturbed. Transplanting them successfully means finding baby specimens, preferably growing in sandy places, and involves precise skill in getting them out of the ground with the sand around the roots still intact.

Whatever you want to grow, learn what its root system looks like first. Most local plants have a tap root, which is a simple root heading straight downwards, without many visible

side-branching networks. The problem with these is that sand or soil does not stick very well around the root when it’s disturbed so it can be a challenge to get beyond the bottom of it, even in a very small specimen.

The local plants aerva javanica grow easily and look beautiful in a big group. Once established, they will seed abundantly, ensuring an endless supply. Heliotropium kotschyi is another great option, and although Zygophyllum mandavillei doesn’t have a noticeable flower, it grows easily in sand or gravel and adds a bright green contrast without much irrigation. Bear in mind that trees reflect the invisible presence of ground water, and have long and robust tap roots to help utilize this resource.

Indigenous gardening implies the use of desert-adapted plants, but it's important to note that most desert plants will grow better, flower better and end up bigger and more robust if they are not constantly water-stressed. You need to give them a helping hand with a bit of TLC. Water late in the day or at night, to minimize evaporation and slow down the drying of the soil in our desert climate. Watering times can also be tailored to the season. In midsummer and through winter, the best schedule is to water deep but more seldom. Although you have used drought resistant plants, realize that if they have been grown with a regular supply of water, they will usually have grown much bigger than their wild relatives, and will have become less resistant to their water being cut off. That said, gardening is always a work in progress, and a garden

is never truly complete. The continuous nurturing ensures an ever changing canvass which is what appeals to the creative gardener, and I’m sure to his or her neighbors too!

Rob Reid strongly advocates planting indigenous plants

The Chinese Year of the Snake is upon us and what better way to celebrate than to catch a performance of Dralion by the infamous Cirque du Soleil, a show that fuses East and West together and just happens to be in the UAE this weekend. We spoke to Julie Desmarais, the company’s publicist, to find out a little bit more about the show.

Can you give us a quick overview of the plot of Dralion? Fusing the 3000-year-old tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multidisciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, Dralion draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and the never-ending quest for harmony between humans and nature. The show’s name is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon (symbolizing the East) and the lion (symbolizing the West).

How many performers make up the show? Dralion features more than 50 performers from 16 different countries.

How long does it take to get a cast ready for a show?Dralion premiered in the Big Top in Montreal before the creators produced a restaging of the show so that it could tour arenas. This took about nine months and also meant we had to recast. Almost 80 per cent of the performers are new, some trained for two months before rehearsals started, others for eight. The cast then had two months of training all together before premiering in October 2010 in New Jersey.

What’s so special about Cirque du Soleil? It’s all about real people performing unreal things. High level acrobats will perform accompanied by a live six-piece band and two singers. The clowns in Dralion are not your typical clowns with red noses, they are more artistic and very funny. Ultimately, Cirque du Soleil is always reinventing itself to stay fresh.

Still stuck for Valentine’s ideas? Not been dating that long and don’t want to go OTT? Getting it right on Valentine’s day can be tricky but don’t worry, we’re here to help. Here’s a handful of great gift ideas that won’t break the bank or have her planning a wedding but that will definitely score you a couple of brownie points!

Bath goodies are a fail-safe gift, every

woman showers after all! Just be careful you don’t pick

something run of the mill. Opt for something in the same range

as her favorite body cream or perfume or go for something

with cute packaging and you’re onto

a winner.

If your woman is an eco-friendly one, for instance she

recycles grocery bags, searches out fair-trade chocolates and has

a ‘go green’ magnet somewhere on her fridge then she’ll love an eco-friendly

candle. There are loads to choose from out there, made from natural

soy wax, with lead free wicks and packaged

with recyclable materials.

OUT OF HOT WATER

GIVE GREEN

Now, if your girl wanted a framed picture of you on her

desk then chances are she’d have one already. What you can

do, is buy her some customized artwork. Think of a place you visited together like

your favorite city, the spot where you proposed or a country you vacationed in and choose a photograph from there.

Then log on to www.art.com to get the picture framed

and mounted. Personalized art.

Remember when you got your first iPhone? How

you didn’t know how you’d possibly survived without one? Well that’s how she’ll feel about her old diaries when you give her a stylish, leather bound, ultra light journal

complete with sections for organizing her shopping,

ladies evenings, exercise

classes etc.

You really can’t go wrong with flowers, well not unless she

has really bad hay fever that is. Don’t necessarily always opt

for traditional red roses, sure they are typically romantic but there’s a bit more thought involved if you manage

to find out what her favorites are and then get her a big bunch, tied up with a pretty bow.

Advocate Khaled Majed Jaber gives us his insight on mending marriages acrossthe country.

Respect, trust and the family up-bringing of your spouse are three essential tenets for a successful marriage.

LIFE LESSONSFOR A HAPPY MARRIAGE• Be patient and try to be compromising.

• Start ignoring the less important things in life.

• Leave certain things to fate.

Valentine's Day is only a few days away. Celebrated across the world, it is a day for sharing with your loved one and expressing how much you care for them. Granted, it’s all gone a bit commercial these days but, the fact of the matter is, no day which promotes love

and happiness can be a bad one and this is especially true in the our busy society, when love is often pushed aside to make way for work obligations and financial responsibilities.

While everyone is encouraged to join in the celebrations, married couples in particular should take this time to strengthen their bond of love. As well as the traditional red roses, chocolates and perfume, one thing that can truly bring about positivity in a marriage is the gift of communication.

In order to divulge a little more on the subject of making your marriage work, we spoke to Khaled Majed Jaber, a lawyer specializing in divorce who has his own unique insight into how couples can avoid seeking out his services.

"Respect, trust and the family up-bringing of your spouse are three essential tenets for a successful marriage" explains Khaled, a wise man who loves to travel, has a passion for sports, and is on a mission to save love. He wants to change the marriage set-up so that couples take time out from their busy schedules to actually sit down and talk with their partners. The ever increasing rate of divorce globally, and in particular in the UAE, is an issue that torments him. A recent study by the UAE Women's Federation suggests that a lack of communication is one major reason for this escalating figure and Khaled agrees.

In the Emirates, when a couple file for divorce they are directed to the Family Guidance Committee where they get a chance to try to sort out their differences, get back together and finally move away from the idea of permanent separation. According to Khaled, this is not always successful, as the procedure often escalates into another session of heated arguments since the couple has already become so far removed from one another. With proper communication, perhaps in the form of weekly ‘discussion’ sessions where the kids, work and family are not a distraction, couples can save their relationship before it reaches such critical stages.

Another positive approach for any couple in crisis is that of marriage counseling. Unfortunately, Khaled notes, in this region very few people take that step in time and, very often, simply prefer to give up and take the easy way out.

Comparing laws in the UAE to those in Saudi, Khalid voices the benefits of the strict divorce procedures set in place in the Kingdom, explaining that they help differentiate between “valid and invalid reasons for getting divorced.” Yet, even beyond legalities, are the religious values that instruct Muslim couples to involve their families in rescuing a couples bond: instructions which are all too often ignored. In The Holy Quran's Surah An-Nisa (The Women), Verse 35, it reads, "If you fear a breach between them twain (the man and his wife), appoint (two) arbitrators, one from his family and the other from hers; if they both wish for peace, Allah will cause their reconciliation. Indeed Allah is Ever All-Knower, Well-Acquainted with all things”.

At the moment, Adv. Khaled is disillusioned with the role that in-laws often play in a marriage. Rather than a couple being able to rely on their family for support, advice and reassurance that their marriage can be saved, he points to those in-laws that advocate divorce proceedings for their children. In reality, mother in-laws could be a massive help in resolving minor issues in a relationship, passing some of their hard-earned wisdom onto their sons and daughters in a bid to promote love and lasting unions. This is something Adv. Khaled hopes will improve as he recognizes the major role that

“both families play in saving a marriage from breaking.” While he believes that couples primarily need space to create harmony with one another, he also notes that the family can play an excellent supporting role. "Three out of ten marriages can be saved if this advice is followed" he concludes.

Having been happily married for over nine years, Adv. Khaled enjoys a peaceful life with his loving wife and two adorable sons. Being a trusted advocate, Khaled encourages all couples to think twice before opting for divorce. With communication, family support and a sense of togetherness, the sacred bond of marriage can be strengthened this Valentine’s day and for many more to come.

A wise man, with so much life experience, Khaled happily shares some words of personal wisdom with us.

Kids these days are spending more time indoors, more time on electronic games and social

media and, ultimately, more time becoming detached from nature. This is a growing crisis and teachers and educators are scratching their heads on how to resolve it. One suggestion is the introduction of gardens and gardening activities in school curriculums.

An increasing number of international studies have shown that kids who attend schools with garden settings, no matter how small, perform better in standardized achievement tests in reading, writing, math, social studies and science. On top of that, they also tend to have better self-esteem, improved confidence and a better diet!

Gardening is, pretty much, a ‘hands on’ experience. In studies focusing on student retention, it has been shown that ‘learning by doing’ produces 75 per cent retained retention as opposed to only 11 per cent retention rate if kids learn through teacher lecturing. Thus getting kids gardening, planting and harvesting is a great way to get them learning.

As a dedicated natural teacher and permaculturist, I was delighted to be invited by Al Ain English Speaking School (AAESS) to design a garden based learning area in which students would learn through the wonder of Mother Nature. Permaculture is an ecology based design concept that encourages people to think carefully about the environment, careful use of resources and how needs can be met in an ecological manner. With the creation of the garden at AAESS, the students are now primarily placed to learn through permaculture.

With three main principles, care of the earth, the people and the future, this learning system aims to create systems to sustain people both for the present and into the future. Started in the late seventies by Australian professor Bill Molison, the initiative has now spread to hundreds of countries and there are tens of thousands of permaculture school projects across the world.

The planning for the garden at AAESS didn’t happen overnight. The school’s Eco Club formed a committee involving parents, teachers and students who were to be chiefly in charge of fundraising and design. Then, with stage one complete, construction began by installing palm leaf fencing to demonstrate the link between local culture and nature. Compost pits were built using recycled timber pallet and the garden beds were designed to echo the patterns of desert sands. Next, fruit trees and summer crops were planted and a program to ensure the students sustain daily watering was set up. Every student from KG1 to Grade 6, got involved in planting and propagating fruit, herbs and vegetables and the result? The garden is now thriving! It’s amazing to see the banana plant, planted only last April,

already fruiting!

The students love the project, are eager to get involved and happy to have a sense of responsibility over ‘their’ garden. This connection to the earth also gives kids a sense of who they are and how they are connected in the circle of life. Developing a sense of respect for the environment, encouraging a healthy relationship with food and fostering cooperation through hands on team work are just some of the many benefits kids at AAESS now enjoy. Let’s hope that this

permaculture garden is only the first of many in the aptly named garden city.

A free world-class education for everyone everywhere.’

This is the mission statement of Khan Academy, a non-profit organization in California, USA. Currently, the Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org) has over 3600 free tutorial videos that can be watched anytime, anywhere. This extraordinary website receives over 7 million visitors a month; growing at a phenomenal rate. Their English video library includes subjects such as: math, history, art history, biology, chemistry, physics, computer science and more. All of the lessons are only 10-minutes-long, and are recorded by the founder himself, Salman Khan. His soothing and conversational voice makes this personable approach to teaching a joy to listen to.

It all started back in 2005 when Salman Khan (then about 28- years-old) began tutoring online for some family members. Working a full-time job as an analyst along with tutoring 15 relatives at the same time, proved to be tricky. Hence in 2006, at the suggestion of a close friend, Khan recorded a few of his videos for his family, and posted them on YouTube. Other viewers began watching and sharing the videos. Unsuspectingly, this simple idea seeded a potential ‘education revolution’.

Continuing with his new-found hobby, the number of Salman’s videos increased along with the number of his fans. The response from the public was so inspiring that in 2009 he felt compelled to quit his regular job and begin a non-profit organization in order to reach and empower as many people as he could. Khan Academy is now backed up by some of the most powerful names in America such as Bill Gates and Google.

Other teachers have embraced Salman’s inspiration. What was once being taught during class is now being assigned as homework; utilizing Khan Academy as a resource. This allows the student to view and repeat the lecture as many times as needed. Afterwards, in class, the students work together on true problem solving activities. This new technique allows each pupil to work at their own pace, while empowering teachers to focus on intervention where it is needed most. Classroom flipping of this nature is now taking place in around 20000 classrooms across America. News of this has spread like wildfire and teachers are fired up in staff rooms around the globe.

As a matter of fact, schools are not the only ones benefitting from these lectures. Adult learners are using them to refresh topics that may have faded with time. Likewise, GED students are utilizing Khan Academy to help get their education back on track. The ages of enrolled students vary from 8 to 68 and students love that they don't have to feel embarrassed to ask for additional help – only one of the many blessings of Khan Academy.

Confidence. Inspiration. Innovation. Helping others to fulfill their dreams. A hearty “Well done!” to this true visionary, Salman Khan!

At this time of year, with the weather so cold outside, many of us tend to do a spot of home hibernation. If you’re going to be spending so much time at home, it’s a great idea to add a few decorative touches, to keep your mind stimulated and your guests impressed. Sara Mattar, a young resident of Al Ain, has some great ideas for creating a stunning centerpiece, that’s also environmentally friendly – definitely a win-win situation!

"Thanks to my dear mother, who has passed on to me her love of indoor plants as well as her resourceful ways, I have a fantastic do-it-yourself decorating idea for an environmentally friendly and low cost centerpiece idea". - Sara

What you’ll need:A selection of your favorite flowers or wild plantsEmpty glass bottles, jars or containers (cleaned!)

An old traySpray paint (any color)Scissors

What to do:1. First up, spray any non-clear bottles or jars with spray paint to cover any logo’s or advertising.2. Half fill each of your bottles or jars with clean water.3. Grab your scissors and your flowers and begin

arranging them sporadically in the bottles/jars. Use the scissors to cut them to varying heights, and get rid of extra leaves.4. Place the bottles/jars onto the tray in any way you please; here we placed them in order of height but play around with it to see which arrangement you prefer.5. Pop your centerpiece in your entrance hall or in the middle of your dining room table and voila – recycled beauty!6. Place your centerpieces by your entrance round table, dining table etc.

Tips: Flowers live longer when they have some sunshine, but not too much heat. Open the windows to let them breathe and make sure they’re exposed to sunlight for a portion of the day.

expense of lucrative deals. When you enter a meeting room, always greet the most senior person first. Before proceeding with formal procedures, it’s preferable to commence with some favorable topics of conversation such as the latest business news or cricket. Avoid talking about personal matters and don’t comment on subjects such as poverty or beggars.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA American people tend to value their space and limit contact to a handshake.

Americans are extremely punctual people and view it as a sign of disrespect if you are late for the meeting. Meetings may appear relaxed but they are taken quite seriously. Expect very little small talk before getting down to business. If there is an agenda, it

will be followed. If you make a presentation, it should be direct and to the point. Try and use statistics to back up your claims as Americans tend to be impressed by hard data.

SOUTH AFRICA – Keep within an arm’s length of the other person to avoid being uncomfortable. Shaking hands at your meeting helps to build trust.

It is imperative that you schedule meetings far in advance, preferably a month prior to the meeting. Be punctual. South African business culture relies on personal trust between parties. They prefer face-to-face meetings to discuss business rather than communicating via email, letter or telephone. If the individual or company you meet with has no prior knowledge of your initial meeting, of you or your business, consider having a trusted third party send a letter of recommendation.

AUSTRALIA – Australians are comfortable with a 3-foot distance. Shake hands with everyone upon meeting and before leaving.

Australians take punctuality seriously, so try and arrive at your meeting 15 minutes early. Personal relationships are important in the business world so an introduction by an established representative maybe helpful in establishing a relationship with an Australian firm. Australians are very direct in the way they communicate, so if you make a presentation, avoid hype and stick to the facts and figures.

Quintessential Business CultureWith the globalization of business, the art of business

communication has evolved. Diversity has increased in the workplace and with multicultural emphasis in society; cultural awareness has become an important tool in business.

Disparate business cultures of the world are on a collision course and the impact of cultural diversity on business communication has widespread implications from corporate boardrooms to small business owners who can benefit from gaining an understanding of the idiosyncrasies of all cultures.

Developing cross-culture savvy staff can be difficult and time consuming however, it will enhance communication, productivity and understanding. On the other hand, not doing so could cost you everything.

One of the most commonly observed cultural differences is the degree of physical contact allowed or expected in a business meeting. Here we take a look at how this is implemented in different cultures across the world.

CHINA – The Chinese tend to stand very close in conversation. Sometimes they touch the other person’s arm, back or grasp a shoulder to show that they have an established, trusting relationship.

Chinese people will not express what they have in mind in public. If you want to successfully do business with your Chinese counterpart, then its

better to have a one-to-one meeting.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – People stand close as the concept of personal space isn’t prominent. In fact, if you stand too far apart, it is seen as a negative and you could be asked why you’re standing at a distance.

Status is important and must be recognized by using the correct title such as Sheikh, Doctor or Professor. There is also a strong vertical hierarchy in most Emirati companies. Many are owned and managed by one powerful person who makes all the decisions. If you hope to have a successful

business relationship, this person must be treated with great respect.

INDIA – Keep approximately a 2-feet distance during conversation and show open body language, for example, don’t fold your arms close to your chest.

Successful business dealings involve building trust. Indians only deal with those they know and trust even at the

Paris! Where better to spend Valentine’s weekend than the city of love?

Landing at Charles De Gaulle Airport, the fifth busiest in the world, you’ll first have to get yourself downtown.

The simplest way to do this is by grabbing a cab from arrivals. This can be a fairly pricey affair so if you’re watching the euros, you may prefer to take the train which, at 30 minutes, is quite a speedy journey and will only cost you around 45 dirham.

Once you get yourself downtown, find a hotel that’s nearby as most of the city’s landmarks cluster around the center of town. If money is no option, you can’t go wrong with Paris’s oldest hotel, Le Meurice. Complete with a fantastic spa and a Michelin starred restaurant, Le Meurice is true regality. For those with a slightly smaller budget, there are plenty of cheaper hotels in the area offering good accommodation in the heart of the city.

As soon as you’re checked in, take a deep breath and get ready to sightsee. The Louvre Museum is one of the most iconic spots in the city and a great place to revel in culture and art. Expect masterpieces galore, including of course the infamous Mona Lisa. Get there early to avoid the crowds.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral is another must see. This gothic structure was the setting of the legendary ‘Quasimodo’ novel and is pretty spectacular. Feeling energetic? Climb all 380 steps to the top of the tower and you’ll be rewarded with some rather spectacular scenery.

You can’t visit Paris without a trip to the Arc De Triomphe, the monument erected in honor of all those who died fighting the French revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Standing at 50m tall and 45m wide, this neoclassical structure is somewhat colossal.

Of course, no Valentine’s trip to Paris would be complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. Visible from all over the city, it attracts more paid tourists than any other, with over 7 million tourists visiting last year alone. Get there just before dusk as the city begins to twinkle for one of the most romantic moments you’ll ever experience.

When it comes to eating, you need not worry. French folk love their food and, while in Paris, you’ll be hard pushed not to stumble across at least a few of the world’s best restaurants. There’s a whole selection of international cuisine so even fussy diners are catered for. Make sure you sample ‘escargot’ (French snails cooked in butter, garlic and parsley), some local ‘fromage’ (cheese) and a few colorful French Macarons. Delicious French coffee paired with a breakfast pain au chocolat is also a great way to fuel up before all that sightseeing.

With flights from the Emirates taking only seven hours to reach the capital of romance, why not surprise your loved

one with a magical trip to ‘Gai Paris’ this Valentine’s Day?

With Parisians simply oozing style and glamour, you’ll find an unlimited selection of boutiques, designer stores and retail units scattered across the city. If you want to pick up some Versace or Hermes then head to the uber-chic Faubourg Saint-Honore district, the true pulse of Paris fashion. If unique art, intricate jewelry or up-and-coming designers are more your forte, then head to the Marais Quarter; the cultural capital of Paris. One of the only areas to have preserved the narrow streets and architectural styles of medieval and Renaissance-era Paris, the Marais quarter is a great spot for couples who, after a spot of shopping, can simply wander hand-in-hand soaking up some of that old Parisian romance.
