Who God Is Tells Us About Ourselves

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, “What does it mean to be human?” This is a question that people have asked for the history of mankind. And every century has its own answer. For Christians, we cannot answer this ques-tion without answering the question — not only “What is God?” — but “Who is God?” And only af-ter we have answered these questions can we answer the question, “Who am I?” This is the most central dogma we celebrate today: the Most Holy Trinity; the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; one God in three Persons. Surprisingly, the word “Trinity” is not found in Sacred Scripture, yet all Christians believe and profess this truth. The word comes from the Latin word, which means “a single collection of three.” The Catholic Church did not invent this doctrine, but the Catholic Church simply gave this most subliminal mystery a name. Therefore, all non-Catholic Christians -- even those that believe in the Bible alone -- owe the development of this doc-trine to the Catholic Church. When we enter into theological discussion about the Most Holy Trinity, when we ponder this awesome mystery, it is important to avoid using our imagination. Our imagination immediately thinks of the three Persons as three beings, but this is false. The Trinity is three Persons but one Being. Our minds cannot fathom this because we think mathematically: one plus one plus one equals three. This is true. However, God is not a math equation. God is utterly One, but He is one divine substance in three Persons. So, He is an infinite, incomprehensible relationship. Now that we have defined who and what God is, we can now talk about who we are. And why? Because all of us are created in His image and in His likeness. We reflect the relationship that is in God -- that is God -- but we reflect it imperfectly. There is a perfect relation-ship between the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. The love between Father and Son is so strong, so perfect that this love produces a Person, the Holy Spirit. (The Holy Spirit is the love be-tween Father and Son.) However, when we look at ourselves, we do not see this kind of love; we do not see this perfect relationship around us. When we hate, when we gossip, when we neglect our Sunday obligation, when we lust, when we are arrogant -- we deny the awesome mystery of what it means to be created in God’s image and likeness. St. Paul reminds us in Romans 8 that we did not receive a spirit of slavery, but we received the Spirit of adoption -- that we can call the Father “Abba”, that we are adopted broth-ers of Jesus Christ. Being made in the image and likeness of the Most Holy Trinity is God’s greatest gift to us. But if we sin, if we fail to love God, if we do not pray, if we do not suffer with Jesus, we will not ex-perience His glory -- we will not experience His love -- the love Who is the Holy Spirit; the love be-tween the Father and the Son.

Y cada siglo tiene su propia respuesta. Para los Cristianos, no podemos contes-tar esta pregunta sin responder a la pregunta- no sólo "¿Qué es Dios?", sino "¿quién es Dios?" Y sólo después de haber respondido a estas preguntas podemos responder a la pregunta: "¿quién soy yo?" El dogma más central de nuestra fe es lo que celebramos hoy: la Santísima Trinidad: el Padre, y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, un solo Dios en tres Personas. Sorprendentemente, la palabra “Trinidad” no se encuentra en la Sagrada Escritura, pero todos los Cristianos creen y profesan esta verdad. La palabra viene de la palabra latin que significa “una colección única de tres.” La Iglesia católica no inventó esta doctrina, pero la Iglesia Católica simplemente dio un nombre a este misterio más subliminal. Por lo tanto, todos los Cristianos no Católicos, incluso aquellos que creen solo en la Biblia —le debe el desarrollo de esta doctrina de la Iglesia Católica. El amor entre el Padre y el Hijo es tan fuerte, tan perfecto que el amor produce una Persona, el Espíritu Santo. (El Espíritu Santo es el amor entre el Padre y el Hijo). Sin embargo, cuando nos miramos a nosotros mismos, no vemos este tipo de amor, no vemos la relación ideal que nos rodea. Cuando odiamos, cuando chismeamos, cuando descuidamos nuestra obligación del domingo, cuando la lujuria, cuando somos arrogantes- negamos el impresionante misterio de lo que significa ser creado a imagen y semejanza de Dios. San Pablo nos recuerda en Romanos 8 que no hemos recibido un espíritu de esclavitud, sino que hemos recibido el Espíritu de adopción — que podemos llamar el Padre “Abba”, que somos hermanos adoptivos de Jesucristo. Al estar hechos a imagen y semejanza de la Santísima Trinidad es el más grande regalo de Dios para nosotros. Pero si pecamos, si no somos capaces de amar a Dios, si no oramos, si no su-frimos con Jesús, no vamos a experimentar su gloria — no vamos a experimentar su amor — el amor Quién es el Espíritu Santo; el amor entre el Padre y el Hijo.

The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a “Day of Recollection” to be held at the church hall on

Saturday June 22, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 12 noon. We will have a speaker from the St. Philip Insti-

tute in Tyler, Tx, Michael Johnston, who will focus on the significance of the Eucharist. All Knights

are encouraged to attend as well as any male parishioners. A breakfast and lunch will be served.
