The most significant trade story of the year might be happening about 5,000 miles from Donald Trump.

Trump is pressing ahead with tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, widely seen as typical of America's retreat from the global order the U.S. had underwritten since 1945. Considering moves like tariffs and his threat to Nafta and Brexit, it can seem that free trade and integrated economies are on the run.

But look again: A very interesting thing just happened in Chile. On Thursday, eleven nations signed what is, in effect, the Trans-Pacific Partnership sans the U.S.

While it has a slightly different name and some provisions aren't the same, the message is clear and welcome. America's commitment to free trade is rightly questioned, but that doesn't

mean that free trade or trade pacts are history. American support for free trade is often conflated with the future of free trade. That's understandable, but this new agreement disproves the connection.

That multilateral accords can happen without the U.S. is significant enough. At least as important is who took the lead: Japan. Kudos to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He did two huge things. First, he demolished the outmoded portrait of Japan as a protectionist fortress. Secondly, Abe showed that Japan can lead in the Asia-Pacific region without the U.S., often seen as Japan's protector and sponsor.

As with every trade deal, the usual caveats accompany the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership as it now calls itself. (More digestible versions are TPP-11 or CPTPP.)

A majority of the 11 members still need to ratify it. Without the U.S., the pact has diminished clout relative to the origin

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - All countries affected by proposed U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum have been invited to negotiate exclusions from the measures, which will take effect within 15 days after U.S. President Donald Trump signs proclamations on Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

Quoting people briefed on the plans, AP said countries will be granted exemptions from the tariffs if they can address the threat their exports pose to the United States.

Trump will sign proclamations ordering import tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum at a White House ceremony later on Thursday.

Companies get exclusions – cluster you know what at White House, Treasury and Commerce –centralized deal making with a chaotic process.

Across corporate America, the race is on to dodge the tariff.

Under the new rules, an importer can ask the Commerce Department for a waiver if there’s a limited supply of the product in the U.S. or if national security is at stake. How that’ll be interpreted is anyone’s guess, but aluminum can makers,

pipeline builders and car companies are now building their cases for why the tariffs shouldn’t apply to them.

Okay … this may be a dumb question but that never stopped me from wanting to learn from those I highly respect.

You’re very big on Kucinich who is for bigger government and for banning assault weapons (first step on that Slippery Slope). I DO think that he is authentic in being for ‘We the people’, as am I. But it seems that his solutions would bring about MORE of the same big government control (albeit it with better intentions).

One of my sister’s great friends in Lizabeth Rogers, who is closely working with Dennis & his campaign and I do believe that Dennis is not ‘the usual policitian’. I agree with Dennis on many things – just questioning his solutions.

It’s been a while since I’ve been in any political category. I used to be a Democat, a Republican and then a Libertairan. Now I am a Humanitarian.

As I’m always open to learning more (especially from you), would you mind sharing your reasons for supporting him?

The individual municipalities might go bankrupt… For decades the Generals role on the basketball court was to support the Globetrotters, make the game interesting for the fans and keep the basketball game close but lose at the end.
