The mission of Smith Senior

Center is to provide diverse, year-

round programs, activities and

services that meet the physical,

social, mental and cultural needs

of senior adults in Greensboro

and Guilford County.

The Smith Sentinel

A NORTH CAROLINA SENIOR CENTER OF EXCELLENCE

MAY/ JUNE 2019

Each year, more and more older adults are making a positive impact

in and around Greensboro. As volunteers, employees, employers, edu-

cators, mentors, advocates, and more, they offer insight and experience

that benefit the entire community. That’s why Older Americans Month

has been recognizing the contributions of this growing population for

56 years.

This year’s Older Americans Month theme, Connect, Create,

Contribute, encourages older adults and their communities to:

• Connect with friends, family, and local services and resources.

• Create through activities that promote learning, health, and

personal enrichment.

• Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.

At Smith Senior Center, we encourage participation, through engag-

ing activities and opportunities to give back to the community. We be-

lieve everyone benefits when everyone can participate, and creates a

stronger and more diverse community. If you haven’t visited the senior

center yet, come see what we’re all about!

FITNESS FACTS

WALKING FOR PEOPLE WITH ARTHRITIS

Joseph Libera, PT, DPT, MPH, MBA, GCS, CEEAA, CSCS

Exercise Expert for Aging Adults — [email protected]

Walking is a safe, enjoyable, low-cost and

low-impact physical activity enjoyed in all sea-

sons and locales individually or in a group.

Those living with arthritis, an estimated 54 mil-

lion American adults, can enjoy and benefit

from improved strength and endurance from

walking.

The following are a few tips to help make a

walking program safe and enjoyable for those

with arthritis:

1) Talk before you walk. Have a conversation with your physical therapist to

discuss if anything would prevent you from walking for routine exercise. How far

or how long should you walk? What intensity or speed? Are there any barriers to

keep you from starting a walking routine?

2) “Walk a mile in your shoes – comfortably.” Much has been written about the

health benefits of walking in both thinly or thickly padded shoes. There is some

evidence that inserts and orthotics may help. Talk to

your physical therapist about appropriate recommenda-

tions for footwear and inserts.

3) Walk with a buddy. A walking buddy or group

may improve your experience and safety. Such social

walkers have less depression. Walking with a pet can

be great too, but it can present its own challenges. Be

sure you are walking a well-trained and leashed dog.

4) Listen to Your Body. Modify your distance, time,

and activity level based on what your joints are telling

you that day. Sharp stabbing joint pains are a warning sign to reduce activity.

Seek guidance from your physical therapist if joint pain is persistent.

5) Move safely and use assistance as needed. Start slowly as needed. Practice

consciously landing softly with each stride. A walking stick or hiking poles may

relieve joint pressure and help with balance. Build the distance and time spent

walking with permission from your body.

Access more tools and resources about walking with arthritis with Walk with

Ease, a program from the Arthritis Foundation to guide you in developing your

walking program.

SPOTLIGHT

Susan Matz—Bessemer Elementary School

Susan Matz volunteered at least one half-day a week

in the Media Center at Bessemer Elementary School for

three months last Fall. She assisted with placing returned

books back on the shelf, pulling books for specific holi-

days and the display case for the Media Center, culling

outdated books from the library as well as the digital sys-

tem and anything else the Director needed. Susan was

hoping she might be able to read a story to the younger

students. The Director, Ms. Paige Motley-Mims, decided

upon a book selection due to the upcoming holidays, “Little Drummer Boy.” Ms.

Motley-Mims made their drummer boy hats and they both dressed the part with red

jackets, white gloves, black pants and boots. On December 19, 2018, Susan read

the book to two different groups of Kindergarteners, first and second graders. Susan

says, “It was great fun to be a part of the excitement for a story and instilling

personal thoughts and resourcefulness of the children after the discussion of the

story. Ms. Motley-Mims was very organized and helpful to me as a volunteer as

well. I enjoyed my entire volunteer time there.”

Honey Bee Helpers - Cone Health Women’s Hospital

The Honey Bee Helpers of Smith Senior Center were honored at the Women’s

Hospital Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Tuesday, April 9 at Proximi-

ty Hotel. The Honey Bees made and donated over 8,000 items to Women’s Hospi-

tal over the past year. These items include baby caps and blankets for the newborns

of the hospital. The hospital values these donations at over $112,000! We are very

proud of these talented, hardworking, and compassionate ladies.

American Cancer Society Road to

Recovery: A Volunteer’s Perspective

Meet Ed

Sigmon. Ed

began volun-

teering his

time to drive

for the

American

Cancer Soci-

ety Road to

Recovery

program in

the summer of 2018. This program

provides transportation to and from

treatment for people with cancer who

do not have a ride or are unable to

drive themselves.

Cancer is no stranger to Ed. His

first wife is a melanoma survivor and

his current wife, Joy is a breast cancer

survivor. Ed was fortunate enough to

have a job with the flexibility to be

able to drive his spouses to and from

treatments. He knows firsthand the

coordination and time it takes to make

it to these lifesaving appointments.

When asked what Ed enjoys most

about his time driving for the pro-

gram, his response was simple, “the

people”. Ed says, “The patients are so

appreciative of the driver’s effort to get

them to and from their appointments.

They understand that at times volun-

teers have to drive many miles to get

them where they need to be on time.”

Ed admits that getting started with

the program as a volunteer does take

some time and effort, but in his exact

words, “it’s worth it”. Ed says, “I en-

joy being part of a system that may

ease a patient’s suffering and get them

to the appointments that may ulti-

mately lead to a cure.”

To learn more about the program,

please email [email protected] or

log on to www.cancer.org/drive.

TECH TALK

DON’T LET THEM WASTE YOUR TIME

Bill Barrett ([email protected]), Computer Tech

This may be a long summer of phone scams. I’ll

expect to get calls from people telling me that Mi-

crosoft called them, or they got a popup on their

browser telling them that they are being hacked, or

their Windows License has expired (they don’t ex-

pire), or they are spreading malware and should not

turn off their computer, but call an 800 number.

Quick solution: Press the on\off button until your

computer turns off, then turn it back on. Your brows-

er’s temporary folder gets cleared when you shut down

and restart your computer, thus killing the scam.

Since we just finished tax season, I have received

calls telling me that they represent the IRS (P.S. the IRS does not call you), and

recently my social security number was used in a money scheme in Dallas, Texas.

The funny thing is that the calls were recordings. I should hope a real person

would call me if it was that important, but I also know that the IRS will only con-

tact you by mail.

[FACT]: There are over 1.9 Billion Windows 7 computers and over 800 million

Windows 10 computers in existence. So how did these people find that one per-

son, especially behind a router and firewall? They didn’t. They just went phish-

ing, and you can’t believe the number of people that they catch.

These people do not know who you are, but they are hoping that you will tell

them everything they need to know, and give them access to your computer along

the way. Once they have access to your computer, they will set it up so that if you

refuse to pay them, they will destroy your computer’s data. This is called

“ransomware.” The usual “ransom” is around $249 for doing nothing. I like to

have fun with these people by just telling them, “No.” Then I say, “Please hang

up.” And I repeat it until they hang up. This really frustrates the scammers.

This is just another reason why I use Sandboxie. (http://www.Sandboxie.com)

Sandboxie protects my computer whenever I’m online. I open my browser in the

“sandbox”, and I know I’m safe because everything transpires in a secure, virtual

container and is destroyed when I close Sandboxie, leaving my computer un-

touched. Come to my Computer Seminar on Wednesday, May 15 at 10 am to

learn more about Sandboxie and Windows 10. If you need anything in the mean-

time, feel free to call me at (336) 988-0891. (No scams, please!)
