Winter social care cashboost ‘too little, too late’

ALMOST £824,000 has beenearmarked for Warringtonto ease the pressure on so-cial care services over win-ter.

But the Liberal Democratshave labelled the Govern-ment’s funding decision as ‘toolittle, too late’.

Cllr Kath Buckley (CON –Lymm South) believes the£823,737 cash boost for thecouncil demonstrates a more‘joined-up approach’ to healthand social care.

She said: “Social care pack-ages allow people to leave hos-pital as soon as they are wellenough and ensure they canregain independence and con-fidence at home.

“In particular, this moneywill help elderly residents whoneed some additional supportbut don’t necessarily have fam-ily nearby.

n Call for Governmentto address ‘genuinecrisis’ over funding

Cllr Bob Barr

By Aran DhillonLocal Democracy Reporter

“This funding will allow War-rington Borough Council tomeet the care needs of morepeople this winter.”

Cllr Pat Wright, executiveboard member for statutoryhealth and adult social care, said the move recognises thatadult social care has a signifi-cant role to play in supporting

tal and it’s positive that this isacknowledged by the Govern-ment.

“Our staff in social care andthe NHS are innovative andhard-working and we are work-ing in an ever more integratedway to get better, joined-up,services.

“However, there is a genu-ine crisis in funding for socialcare.

“We look forward to seeingmore in the upcoming greenpaper about how a long-termfunding settlement will do thisbut I am not hopeful based onthe track record of this Gov-ernment so far.”

But Cllr Bob Barr, leader ofthe town’s Liberal Democrats, has hit out at the Conserva-tives.

He said: “In the 2017 election,Liberal Democrats warnedthat if the Conservatives ruledalone they would try to resolvethe country’s economic prob-lems on the back of the disa-bled, the poor and the low paid.

“Unfortunately, that was ex-actly what happened. While itis welcome that the Conserva-tives have finally seen the er-ror of their ways, this really istoo little and too late for manyof those who are suffering.”

cil has not received any ofthe £823,737 earmarked by theGovernment for social care toease pressure in the systemthis winter.

Man preyed onelderly womanin her own home

A TWENTY-YEAR-OLD whopreyed on a trusting pen-sioner in a scam that left herfeeling helpless and scared isnow behind bars.

Luke McDonagh was jailed for30 months after being convictedof dishonestly making a falserepresentation to make a gainfor himself or another as well asa section 47 assault from a sepa-rate incident.

Chester Crown Court heard onThursday how McDonagh hadtargeted the 87-year-old woman’shome in Latchford, taking ad-vantage of her trusting natureafter claiming he could fix theholes in her roof.

The grandma-of-one, who haslived in the home for 12 years, handed over £1,400 but the work

was never completed. The victim’s son, who was on

holiday at the time, said: “She isfrom a generation that trustedpeople.

“Back in her day, if someonesaid they could help you with aproblem then they were doingyou a favour.

“She thought someone was try-ing to help her. She didn’t realise

in this day and age that somepeople can’t be trusted.

“It has shaken her confidenceand she’s not as trusting as sheused to be.”

The elderly woman was firstapproached by McDonagh, andsome other accomplices whohave yet to be identified, in July2016 when they told her theycould fix the holes in her roof.

She handed over £400 for thematerials before McDonagh, from Chester, came back weekslater to request a further £1,000.

As the woman didn’t have themoney, McDonagh put her ina taxi where he told her to goto a bank to withdraw the cashwhich she handed over.

McDonagh was linked to thecrime after his fingerprints werediscovered on the loft hatch byforensics.

PC Richard Whitehead said:“These criminals actively targetthe most elderly and vulnerablepeople in the community andthis kind of callous deception iscommon practice.

“This is an 87-year-old widowwho does not deserve to be treat-ed in this way and this crime lefther feeling helpless and scared.”

Judge David Aubrey, sentenc-ing, told Belton: “You are a wom-an of good character.

“You are described as a caring, loving mother who would put

anyone before herself.“I am aware of the issues that

you have had relating to anxietyand stress.”

However he stated that anymitigation brought beforethe court could not be strongenough to avoid sending her tojail.

He added: “You were stealingfrom your employers.

“You are described as a hardworking woman but what youwere doing was taking theseitems yourself and pocketingthe proceeds of your ill-got-ten gains which was at least£160,000.

“It is an awful lot of money forany employer to lose.

“Your husband, family andclose friends knew nothing ofthat, so much was your shame.

“You hid it from others and soit was that every time you en-tered your home you were nowliving a lie from who those whostood by you throughout.
